VOTE/DISCUSS: When Cade is cleared to play, will KF start him? Or, will KF start Sully & rotate Cade in? Or, is it Sully's FULL TIME Job to Lose?

When Cade is healthy again, what will KF do?

  • Cade will start & Sully will be rotated in (like before)

  • Cade won't start but he will play (ie, he will be rotated in)

  • It is Sully's FULL TIME job to lose (ie, if Sully plays well vs Wisc, he's the Full Time QB1)

Results are only viewable after voting.
It would be a stupid move, obviously, because QB1 is very clear now.

But it very well could happen, based on what follows.

Reasonable question given the history. I think it is dependent on how Sullivan does. If he can move the team like he did last Saturday, I don't think Cade is coming back in. He did includes his qualifier - "what's best for the team".

Which actually reads "What HE THINKS is best for the team"

If we can draw some inferences from interviews with Kirk and Tim, we hadn't seen much of QB2 Sully before last game because Tim wasn't sure how to utilize him besides red zone with Cade as QB1. After Cade struggled yet again in the first half at MSU, the plan was to play him for at least one series in the first half and then make a half-time decision regarding the rotation. The new plan was much like the one for McCann and Banks in 2001.
You're kidding, right?
Wasn't sure how to use him because he didn't know that a QB can run elsewhere on the field, not just between the 10 and goal line?
There is no good explanation as to why he wasn't getting more snaps throughout the preceding games.

Anyone have concerns about Sullivan? Mine is reflected in that play against Washington, where muffed the snap, and as he was falling he tried to throw the ball. His knee was down so it was a no harm no foul. But it was a poor choice, one I perceived to be done to try to make something happen. Don’t think he should be reined in because his enthusiasm is a positive, but it could get him into trouble. Just something to watch for.

no. Cade has lost too many games for Iowa and that is his metric. Cade is done at Iowa barring injurry. KFs MO is pretty easy to follow after two decades.

Not kidding at all. Tim said it in an interview. He thought it would disrupt the flow to rotate QBs during a series.

My only concern about Sully is we don’t know how well he throws the deep ball. It’s not something he did at NU. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing what he does on Saturday.
No idea on how well Sullivan will play the rest of the season but after watching his highlights against Maryland last year...I'd guess he throws the best deep ball on the team.

We know how well Cade throws the deep ball. Not well. Prior to that diving catch by Anderson, the longest completion for the entire season was 33 yards which was worst in the country.

So... he won't even think about it when the backup is what's best for the team. But when his favorite is clearly second place, he'll openly talk about rotating.
This is reading what the reader wants the words to stay without thinking that KF never rules anything in and never rules anything out. If Sully plays well Saturday we have seen the end of Cade McN.

I hope Sully has a really good game so that there's no question who QB1 is the following week. I still fear that Kirk wants to play Cade if Cade is healthy.

If that happens bring out the rope

Yep….neuter Sullivan from what he does best.
I wouldn't mind them telling Sullivan to get out of abounds and try to avoid some hits. The kids a gamer as was displayed last Saturday but it'd probably be wise to have him avoid unnecessary punishment...

Kind of a balancing act, don't want to neuter him, but don't need him going down with an injury trying to get an extra yard.

It’s behind a paywall. Care to share the sentence/paragraph in question?
Just to follow up on my previous post ... I still haven't seen the article in question (too cheap to subscribe), but I did listen to Tuesday's Hawk Central podcast. While Leistikow never explicitly said Lainez was injured, he did, indeed, strongly hint that Marco would be unavailable this weekend, and said it would be "very surprising" if Jackson Stratton is not next in line behind Sullivan.

So, kudos to @HawksRule73 for bringing this information to the board. And my apologies for questioning the info above.

Still, I find it surprising that more people haven't been talking about this, both on this board and on the Interwebs in general. Perhaps @HawksRule73 is the only one among us who can read. ;)

And assuming this information is correct, I think it's even more likely that we see a conservative strategy on Saturday, when it comes to how Sullivan is utilized.

A B1G team in this day and age being down to a walk-on for QB2 is plain comical....

I would keep Sullivan in as he is the starter next year and could use the seasoning. KF however is a loyal guy and my guess is he keeps CM in the fold some.

Well this is absolutely crazy if Sully is performing well, moving the chains, and playing better than what Cade did.

As they say, this is big boy football, big money sports, and if you are not performing you get benched.

On the play where Cade got smashed, maybe a concussion but I have not heard that for certain, he through a terrible wounded duck to a receiver who was open. The pass fluttered and was in the air for a long time and almost picked. You could see Cade did not want to step into that throw which he also fades away on other throws.

If Sully is doing well there is no effing need with only 4 games left to bring Cade in because skill wise he is not nearly as fast, hasnt been that accurate which buts him and the passing game into slumps during games, and he doesnt threaten the edge of the defense. Kirk would blow peoples minds with a change that is not needed unless it is in mop up time and personnally I would like to see Marco then

If Sully performs like we all hope he will, then I don't think we'll see much of Cade (if any) on the field, barring injury.

Why? O'Connell was a walk-on at Purdue and now in the NFL. That's recent enough for "this day and age."

Stratton isn't a typical walk-on, either. He had scholarship offers out of high school and originally committed to Washington. He'd probably be on scholly now if any were available. I'd wager he was promised one following this season.

if he truly has learned and intends to rotate situationally (say when sullivan is having a cadesque day) i am fine with it. but not if if he means to rotate coz cade is a good boy he would allow to date his daughter if she was available

If Sully plays well & Iowa wins comfortably (hopefully) vs Wisconsin, Iowa has to stick with Sully for the rest of the season, imo

I think the current situation resembles the Padilla-Petras competition. Kirk used the Petras shoulder injury as excuse for why he could play Padilla and Padilla then had several starts and chance to win the job. Unfortunately, Padilla wasn't any good and Petras ended up winning the job back. Now Kirk again claims McNamara is hurt and this is all part of his plan to work in more Sullivan anyway. Seems like a lame ego trip. I think Sullivan is much better athlete/size/arm strength >>> Padilla so I think Sullivan will be able to win the job and be setup as the man with Union card for next year.

McNamara losing his job is not a big deal. Sports is about competition and Kirk never cries when a CB or a RB or any other position gets replaced. It really is weird how much Kirk's ego is vested in sticking with his original QB decision. KIrk's mettling in the offense is what got his son fired, though it is also clear that both Brian and Kirk were not very good offensive minds.

The only thing is, like you mentioned, Padilla ended up actually being terrible.

Sully, on the other hand, led the team to 37 unanswered points. Not sure when a backup QB at Iowa has ever had such a spark AND an explosion of points.

And KF is not simply claiming CM is hurt; Cade's helmet was taken from him during the game; he couldn't concentrate enough to go to class (he was going to try and go yesterday).

KF doesn't tell Phil who to start; I really hope he's not telling Lester who to start.

KF says they play the best players who give the team the best chance to win; it seems clear who that QB is.

That's my bad....I forgot I pay for that content. 😀

Iowa’s backup quarterback situation is dicey

Ferentz gave a non-answer to a question of whether redshirt freshman Marco Lainez was available for Saturday’s game. It’s likely that Sullivan’s backup this week will be Jackson Stratton, a walk-on transfer from Colorado State who was initially committed to Washington. Stratton is a 6-foot-4, 193-pound redshirt sophomore who went 4-for-17 for 78 yards in his only college action in 2022.

After Stratton?

“I won’t tell you who No. 4 is right now, and I hope you never find out, with all due respect," Ferentz said. "It’s a guy who played high school quarterback. We’re basically out of guys.”
