VOTE/DISCUSS: When Cade is cleared to play, will KF start him? Or, will KF start Sully & rotate Cade in? Or, is it Sully's FULL TIME Job to Lose?

When Cade is healthy again, what will KF do?

  • Cade will start & Sully will be rotated in (like before)

  • Cade won't start but he will play (ie, he will be rotated in)

  • It is Sully's FULL TIME job to lose (ie, if Sully plays well vs Wisc, he's the Full Time QB1)

Sully needs to listen to Mr. Keating.

That's my bad....I forgot I pay for that content. 😀

Iowa’s backup quarterback situation is dicey

Ferentz gave a non-answer to a question of whether redshirt freshman Marco Lainez was available for Saturday’s game. It’s likely that Sullivan’s backup this week will be Jackson Stratton, a walk-on transfer from Colorado State who was initially committed to Washington. Stratton is a 6-foot-4, 193-pound redshirt sophomore who went 4-for-17 for 78 yards in his only college action in 2022.

After Stratton?

“I won’t tell you who No. 4 is right now, and I hope you never find out, with all due respect," Ferentz said. "It’s a guy who played high school quarterback. We’re basically out of guys.”
I know who it is.🙂

Why? O'Connell was a walk-on at Purdue and now in the NFL. That's recent enough for "this day and age."

Stratton isn't a typical walk-on, either. He had scholarship offers out of high school and originally committed to Washington. He'd probably be on scholly now if any were available. I'd wager he was promised one following this season.
I figured someone would find some extreme outlier and try some kind of “gotcha.”

Can’t wait to see Stratton in the NFL.

How about Matt McCloin at Penn State or Stetson Bennett at Georgia? They both made the NFL (Bennett currently). Who knows how good Stratton might be (not you), but a lot of teams use walk-ons for depth, and a few manage to outperform any reasonable expectations. And as I noted, Stratton was a scholarship guy out of high school and likely has one already promised as an incentive to come to Iowa.

Look at his screen-name. Pretty par for the course for him
Coming from one of the board’s biggest KF-fellators, that’s rich.

Glad so many people are happy with the QB room. If KF has proven anything it’s that he knows his stuff regarding QB’s. I guess I should be thrilled that we might have to count on a guy who couldn’t see the field for 5-7 Colorado St last season to help us win games this year….

Dude, no one's thrilled that we're down to QB5 as the backup, but stop making it seem like it's something that should have been prepared for or like someone dropped the ball. Yeah, teams should always assume they'll be down to their 5th string during the year and just stock up on scholarship QBs.

It would be a stupid move to play Cade moving forward, obviously, because QB1 is very clear now.

But Cade playing again very well could happen, based on what follows.

If Sullivan doesn’t perform, he won’t stay number one. He needs to move the chains and not throw turnovers.

I would hope they don’t limit him this weekend trying not to get him hurt and instead just play to win. Sully had very conservative play calling while he was in against NW and the passing game was completely shut down with about 8 minutes left.

So, typical Iowa offense in the 4th quarter with a lead.

Lester brought in Stratton along with Sully after working with Hill and Lainez during spring practice. He obviously wasn't comfortable with only those two guys plus an incoming freshman to back up a recovering McNamara. Getting Hill to move along and bringing in Sully and Stratton was a definite upgrade to the QB room, even if not ideal. I get not having confidence in KF's evaluation of QBs, but surely Lester knows a thing or two. There was talk during fall camp that Stratton could overtake Lainez for QB3, although we haven't seen that reflected in any released depth chart.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that we don't want to see Stratton taking any snaps on Saturday unless it's mop-up work as the Hawks are cruising to a W.

Great points.

I hope Lester has a good game plan and Sully plays a clean game.

Wisconsin will want to try to get Iowa into 3rd and longs and make Sully beat them with the pass.

Surely, they will take advantage of his legs....right? Just need to be smart and slide or run out of bounds.

A win over Wisconsin would make quite the statement for him

Take the reigns, leave no doubt.

Iowa hasn't beaten Wisconsin 3 straight times in 20 years (since 2004).

Two quick points from the Kakert podcast this week, for those who might give an F:
  • Lainez apparently has a broken thumb, which is the reason he will be unavailable Saturday, and probably longer.
  • The emergency QB behind Stratton is Kyler Gerardy, a freshman DB. Was apparently at pretty good QB at North Scott.
