War On Southern Culture

Yes. You did when you implied southern culture is "racist". Would you attribute all of the negative stereotypes of blacks and other minorities part of their cultures?
No. The OP inferred that "southern culture" was racist and he said that in spite of its Jim Crowe laws, its segregationist history, its denying its black citizens the right to vote and its occasional lynchings of black men and women for failing to act their part, they weren't.
Is "racism" limited to "the South"? Certainly not. However, the conditions of blacks in The South certainly provided the fodder for attempts to end racism as it exists in America.
His talk of a "war on The South" sounds vaguely familiar to the charge of the right towards liberals and their claims of a "war on women"....Both points are a wee bit extreme. Not that both sides don't have their validity.

Southern culture should revolve around food. That's one thing the south does right, even if it will make you weigh 300 pounds and kill you by 50.

The world is changing around Southerners. Google and several foreign auto companies are in Alabama now. They are undoubtedly behind some of the pressure to bring down the flag there. In South Carolina there a bunch of European manufacturers with sizeable plants. They can't be too happy with the flag being flown there.

Flags, monuments, illegals, Dixie song...not hard to figure this one out. Actually a brilliant plan.
That's Southern Culture?

Wow! I've lived in the South my whole life and never once considered any of that as part of the "culture" down here. I mean, maybe "Dixie" is a song that refers to the Land of Cotton, but I grew up around tobacco road.

Yeah, I moved to the south from Iowa after graduating college. There are racists and non-racists everywhere. Perhaps they're more concentrated in the south, but that doesn't make it okay to label southern culture as racist. But since it is apparently okay to do so, as demonstrated by some posts in this thread, the arguement of a liberal "War on Southern Culture" is certainly valid.

My friend who is a professor and a lesbian just spent time in the southeast with her wife. She said it's the most intolerant place she's ever been. My ex who is Mexican had people say things to her that were terrible. My trip to Alabama for work where I heard the N word no less than 10 times within the first 4 hours. Sure not all are racists but there are a high concentration of them. If attacking Southern culture means attacking hate culture then I am all for it.

Are you getting me a present?

I have no clue what a bunch of Europeans would have against a flag...fill me in on that. I would think cheap labor and business breaks fuel these people...not southern culture. Pressure is coming from RINOS who are interested in the northern moderate vote...just surprised you don't see that.

Where do you get that idea? Why would they care? You may not know this but Conderate battle flags have often sold quite well at Olympics and other international sporting events.

why would anyone be concerned about a "war on" southern culture? i mean name one thing that has had "war on" declared against it that hasnt survived or thrived. "war on" drugs, "war on" terror, "war on" poverty, it looks to me that if you have "war on" declared against you that you are assured a victory or at least a stalemate.

Wait, a flag that represents racism and treason, and hating on gays represents "southern culture"?

Is there anything else, NASCAR, perhaps?

The hypocrisy of the liberal generalization that the south is a bunch of "racist rednecks", while criticizing the use of stereotypes and deragotory terms for minorities.

I live in the South and from what I see there is a lot of" racist rednecks" ....

I see critically thinking people denounce derogatory terms for minorities while the "rednecks" spew hate. You can't see the difference?

There ARE racist rednecks in every corner of the globe. It's called uneducated, rural people with simple minds. That's not exclusive to the South. It never was, and never will be. All people need to acknowledge that all colors are responsible for racial prejudice... not JUST white people. The fact that white people have tried to, or successfully managed to, rule over off-white people doesn't mean you'll cure all racial prejudice by forcing only white people to feel shame or guilt from it.

Uneducated, rural people with simple minds!!!!????

The culture of arson at black churches is indeed under fire. Why do the feds want to stop free expression of the proud heritage of Dixie?

http://thegrio.com/2015/06/29/black-church-burnings-fbi/

On Monday, the College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church in Knoxville was burned down when, according to church sources, someone stacked bales of hay against the door and then lit them.

On Tuesday, the God’s Power Church of Christ in Macon, Georgia, was hit by fire, and while authorities say it has the usual indicators of arson, they are still investigating.

On Wednesday, the Briar Creek Road Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, was hit by fire that authorities are sure was arson but have not yet released their evidence to show it.

On Wednesday, the Fruitland Presbyterian Church in Gibson County, Tennessee, also caught fire, and investigators have not yet ruled out arson.

On Friday, the Glover Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenville, South Carolina, caught fire, and authorities have not yet announced whether or not it was arson.

On Saturday, the College Heights Baptist Church in Elyria, Ohio, caught fire, and authorities are still investigating the cause.

So you have any suspects?

The governors of Alabama and South Carolina have called for the Confederate flag to be removed from their state capitols. It sounds to me like your own duly elected leaders are turning on you.

Oh please I don't really care about this topic as I find it just the latest deflection from actual issues but spare me the elected officials have spoken crap. The go where the wind blows them.

Sounds like it was pretty dry outside.

I agree with the first part of the bolded but disagree with the last part. The most racist people you'll find live in big cities. Bos, Philly, Detroit, Chi, all very segregated, racist cities, that are 2nd to no rural city in their hatred of the opposite race. This doesn't even include the blue bloods elitists who are generally white, rich, and will do whatever they can to avoid coming in contact with a minority, and they sure as hell aren't welcomed to join their country clubs. It's not just white people and no group is exempt from another groups racists beliefs.

This is wrong! I have lived in some of the big cities you listed and I've lived in the South in rural settings. The level of racism in the South is not even close to the cities you listed. Watch a black guy walk into a white rural bar in the South. The music stops and the evil eyes come out. Ive been in these situations with my friends. This does not happen in the cities you listed.

Most of these hateful people are Christian Republicans that fly the confederate flag.

How do you know the ones flying the confederate flag are Christian Republicans? Stereotyping is no better on the left than it is on the right.

I lived in Alabama for a year and might have heard that word 10 times in the year I was there. I would bet my life savings that you're making that up.

People can't recognize that there is a double standard when it comes to stereotyping the south, aren't "critically thinking people".

Have you ever lived in the south? I have. About 6 years in N Carolina and one in Charlston. Lots of very nice folks and lots of rednecks.
I lived in North Carolina and worked in South Carolina for slightly over 10 years. I have my doubts about the people being any more racist there than in Iowa and Minnesota(where I lived 13 years previously). I disagree with southerner whites on the Civil War. I disagree on the confederate battle flag, although I do believe the current flap is just rhetoric. And I don't believe there is any war on their culture. Just look at the bluegrass bands playing around the state. And there is stupid Nascar racing all over the country. It does seem a lot of white southern men have their panties in a bundle.
