War On Southern Culture

My folks live in North Carolina and hear it at least once/week.

So in the 3 minutes that elapsed from the time I made my post, you had time to call your parents, have them tally how often they hear the "n" word, then report it to HROT. Or maybe they call you up every time they hear it in you keep a tally for yourself. Either way, I'd say the odds are pretty favorable you're making numbers up as well.

And FWIW, I'd say the frequency of which I hear the "n" word is pretty consistent between Iowa and the south. Iowa isn't even close to the melting pot of diversity many of it's residents would like to proclaim it as being.

So you have any suspects?

LOL, I suspect the arsonists come from a certain demographic, yes. You know, the demographic that waves the treason flag and claim it is about heritage, think you tube joke videos "prove" reverse racism is the bigger problem, think a plaque establishes the lack of racism in Mississippi, and think there is a war on southern culture.

Where were you last week?

Ummm, I do see and talk with my parents on a regular basis and this has been a recurrent complaint of theirs for several years.

God, you're a dumbshit.

I'm sure you do. Given your last comment, it's evident you'll be seeing them when they get home from work this afternoon. Thanks for further supporting my theory that you're a liar.

This is wrong! I have lived in some of the big cities you listed and I've lived in the South in rural settings. The level of racism in the South is not even close to the cities you listed. Watch a black guy walk into a white rural bar in the South. The music stops and the evil eyes come out. Ive been in these situations with my friends. This does not happen in the cities you listed.

Most of these hateful people are Christian Republicans that fly the confederate flag.
You are a liar. Period. I'm calling you and the other liar out on your bullshit right now. You are full of shit and a hypocrite as well.

I've lived in VA, NC and SC (in rural areas and cities) my entire life. I can honestly say, with no hesitation, that I cannot even remember the last time I ever heard "n*gger" uttered in a public place in a malicious way, or, for that matter, in ANY way. I can't even recall hearing black people using it in a public setting. I go to a local recreational complex for softball, basketball, you name it, and there are equal amounts of both races. So, I dunno where some of you are choosing to visit, but I NEVER hear it used.

Now, I do hear "n-word" on occasion.

A war of at least some elements of Southern Culture sounds as justified as a war on some elements of radical Islam.

Do we need boots on the ground, or will a drone campaign be sufficient?

A single drone to wherever in Maryland you reside would be sufficient in my war against the south.

I kid...

If you are white you obviously have never driven through an inner city black hood or you wouldn't have mad that utterly ridiculous statement...

I expressed what I observed. Ive lived in the deep South( Louisiana, Miss and Florida) for 20 years.

How do you know the ones flying the confederate flag are Christian Republicans? Stereotyping is no better on the left than it is on the right.

What are the chances they are a bunch of Hindus that love Obama?

That is a response but not an answer to the question.

You have no way of knowing but your bigoted stereotyping allows you to feel good with it.

So where do you live now?

Florida...

Mississippi and Louisiana were by far the most racist states I have ever lived in. People that visit these states would probably never notice the level of hate, but once you live there it becomes evident.

Well, you've either never lived anywhere else or as I suspect, you're just full of crap.

I stated earlier where I have lived.

Tell me where you have lived, not visited, that gave you an authority on state to state racism?

Is your avatar a joke or a badge of honor?

I have lived or spent signifigant time in most states and many countries. There is far more racism up north and you have a hard time finding those who have spent signifigant time in both regions that disagree with that. That includes people like MLK and Colin Powell. Now maybe you haven't noticed because typically up there they segregate more.

Maybe you view things as racist that are not. Maybe you view the flag in my avatar as racist and therefore you think I may be. You could not be further from the truth. I don't have a racist bone in my body and my reverence for that symbol does not have any racist implications. Yes it is a badge of honor and a symbol against the ignorance and belligerence against the South right now.

LOL, maybe you are the one who cant see anything beyond the flag.

I lived in these states as a neutral, seems like you have preconceived ideas going in.

What states have you lived in and at what time frame?

You don't get that much of my time, I'll give you some locations but I'm not figuring out time frames for you.

I have lived or spent at least a year working in
Florida
Georgia
Louisiana
Texas
California
New Jersey
New York
Michigan
Illinois
Ohio
Alberta
Ontario
France
Germany
Austria
Kuwait
Saudi Arabia
Mexico
I may have missed one or two.

Now where exactly were you when the music stopped and the evil eyes came out when a black person entered the bar?

How are you northern transplants measuring and defining the presence of racism?

As I've already stated, I have lived my entire life in the South (VA, NC, SC) in rural areas and big cities (Richmond, Charleston, Charlotte) and I must be missing the regular Klan rallies and trips back to 1953. We have Civil War reenactments, but then all the battles, save for a few, were all fought in the South.

I can absolutely attest that I NEVER hear anyone say "n*gger" in ANY public setting that I'm in. I cannot recall having heard that out in public in... I can't even remember. I have heard people use "the N-word" on occasion, but even that was usually someone on the news talking about a story in some other part of the country. Maybe I'm fortunate to live in fairly harmonious places. I see many mixed couples and mixed children all the time.

Believe it or not, the South is not like the film Rosewood now.

It happened in Pensacola, Fl while I was playing basketball in college and in Shreveport. LA.

Yeah, well I'm calling BS.
This is getting to be a very unfair debate technique. The guy shares a personal POV and you call him a liar. He details why he has a personal view and you just keep calling him a liar. Well it's time you put up or move on. Prove he is lying.

Actually, when somebody shares a personal account of something in a debate, it's up to them to prove they are telling the truth. Until they do, it can reasonably be assumed they are telling tall tales.

And I don't necessarily doubt that the poster would have been met with stares if he were to walk with a colored man into a rural bar in the south. Much like when I return to Iowa and walk into any small town bar in the Northeast Iowa, I am met with stares, and I'm white. So stares in a rural bar directed at unfamiliar people are not uncommon anywhere. But to me, where his story doesn't hold up, is "white rural bar". I've lived in numerous places throughout the south and traveled across the deep south between east Texas and the Florida Panhandle area countless times in the past 15-20 years. I'm one who definitely likes to stop at dives for BBQ and beer while on road trips and the next "white rural bar" I come across will be my first. "White rural bars" are something you're more likely to see in the movies than you'll see along interstate 10 while travelling across the south.

I disagree. When a person shares personal stories or opinion its polite and standard to assume they are telling the truth unless you have a reason to suspect they are lying. If you call a person a liar, its incumbent on the person making the accusation to prove that claim or be the recipient of the judgment they were attempting to make towards the other.

Hey... I have had 2 different African-descent girlfriends. And, you'd think that would draw lots of attention and remarks sooner or later, considering we were out in public frequently. Both relationships lasted about 18 months combined. Never once did I hear anything rude or even notice an unfriendly expression. I must just be lucky. Maybe I don't exude racism, so it doesn't come back to me. Who knows.

I have lived most of my life in the midwest (Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana), but have spent the last five years living in NW Georgia and working in SE Tennessee. My impression is that racism is just as bad, if not worse, in the north, than it is here. It's certainly not perfect, but the racism here doesn't come close to what I observed frequently when I lived and worked in Chicago.

I generally tend to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to personal accounts or viewpoints, even in a debate, as long it's presented as "...in my encounters I have heard the 'n' word used in the south..." Generally speaking the comments are not conducive to verification; more akin to hearsay. If my parents say they've heard the 'n' word on a frequent basis during their years living in the south, I can't refute it. Nor can they confirm it without having recorded the instances. So, I can either believe them or think that they're a couple of older liberal democrat northerners who really should've investigated where they were moving before making the jump and just keep getting confused when buying niger seed for their finch feeders.

I also have no trouble believe someone who says they've lived in the south for some time and have never heard the 'n' word. Both situations are completely plausible.

If someone presents something as fact, however, such as "it's a fact that the 'n' word is used much more frequently in the south than in the north" then that's a statement that could be verifiable by various linguistic studies (and, if I wanted to search the linguistic literature, I'm sure I could scrape up something that would address it).

I was born a Yankee but have lived all over, my dad was military. I also did a stint in the military as well and my anecdotal evidence is that the dudes from the big northeast cities are the most racist dudes I've ever been around and it's not close. Southerners are used to dealing with black people because they see them every day and have a great deal of interactions with them. Northerners have never been around black people because their schools and neighborhoods were segregated.

With that said American racists exist to be sure. I knew a guy in law school who straight up told me blacks were better off under slavery, but we pale in comparison to the Foriegn racists. I used to hang with a black friend of mine in the navy and we would go bar hopping in a few different foreign countries. People would straight up disrespect him just because he was black. I remember some girl in Panama who was almost as black as my buddy asked me if I had any white friends that I could hook her friend up with (who by the way was pretty black herself).

I was also in the Hoffbrauhaus in Munich with a black friend of mine. We asked some German dudes if we could sit at one of the big tables with them. They said I could but not my buddy. There are some bad Americans but most of the rest of the world is way worse.

On another note WTF is up with the Dukes of Hazard being pulled from syndication? I loved that show when I was a kid. If you don't think there is a war on the south you are naive.

I had to look that up . . . Dukes of Hazzard was pulled off TV land. JFC.
