War On Southern Culture

I've heard the an word used in a derogatory manner, along with a number of other terms I previously didn't know existed, here in St Pete more than anywhere else I've been. Boston might be an exception. The people I hear saying it in Tampa bay are primarily from either Ohio or New Jersey.

I disagree. When a person shares personal stories or opinion its polite and standard to assume they are telling the truth unless you have a reason to suspect they are lying. If you call a person a liar, its incumbent on the person making the accusation to prove that claim or be the recipient of the judgment they were attempting to make towards the other.

Under normal conversational circumstances, I'd agree. But in a debate, not so much. Otherwise any regular prick could say anything and the winner of the debate would be decided by whoever is the most clever liar, rather than by truth.

The better and IMO proper way this works is personal experience simply doesn't carry much weight in a debate. But you don't automatically assume they are lying. And if you make the factual claim that the person is lying and can't back it up, you lose points. Accusing a person of lying is the nuclear option in debate, it shuts off all conversation. It can't come so easy because it's essential in a democratic society for debate to come easy.

Tell you what. I rescind my lying claim and change it to he is exaggerating and quite possibly mistaken in his view of what may or may not have happened. He is grossly wrong in believing it is anymore likely in one rural part of the country than another. I know I've gotten funny looks and occasional bad treatment in places across the country and world just because I wasn't from there or looked or acted slightly different from the locals. Typically once we start talking and get to know each other better that goes away, on some rare occasions they never give me that chance.

I'm fairly certain that if pressed enough, he will admit that the music did not actually stop when he and his friends entered those places.

That sounds better.

Good find and thanks for sharing. According to these maps, a person could make a strong argument that eastern Iowa is the most racist AND homophobic part of the entire USA.
I saw that, feather in our cap huh? I guess that makes HROT the perfect forum for this discussion.

Yeah, well I'm calling BS.

I tell you what I experienced and you call me a liar? I have no reason to lie and make crap up. You seem to be in denial about the South and look at it through Y T smeared glasses.

You crack me up, you're true "colors" are showing.

Natural is correct. When someone presents something as personal experience in a debate you take it for what it's worth. Sometimes it provides a bit of context for one's arguments. I generally believe someone's experiences unless I personally have something to refute it or the individual is using it as specific factual evidence for their claims.

I do agree that it's still incumbent upon the individual to eventually provide facts to prove one's point.

According to what rules? Your personal rules as it pertains to this particular debate? Natural's rules? Did I miss something in the terms and conditions of this website that state "all tales told on this website are considered true until proven otherwise"? I'd be willing to bet that if I had posted about walking into a "white rural bar" with a gay man in Iowa and the music immediately stopping as the entire bar angrily scowled at the two of us, you'd call BS as well. Or how about if I had posted that I heard the word "f****t" no less than 10 times in four hours after stepping off a plane at CID? Or how about claiming my parents, who live in Iowa, hear the word "f****t" no less than once a week? If I had posted any of those examples, would you have come to my rescue exclaiming my tales as true until proven otherwise? Or are you just another a-hole pawn in society who picks and chooses what is right from wrong according to what is hip among the political party you follow?

It doesn't matter though, if you're not ducking your head in shame after seeing the maps Natural posted, there is no use in trying to debate anything with you.
