WBB 2019-20 Season in general

Doyle, Meyer & Sevillian a combined 7-32 from the field. This team won't win with those numbers. OTOH a monster game from Czinano, and Warnock had 14 pts, 6 rebs in 21 minutes, so some good things.

Czinano with 17 rebounds? That's like a 15 rebounds improvement from her average:) Very good sign despite the loss.

Gonna get real now! Next three games against the three best teams in the league (IMO), followed by @Minny.

I hadn't taken Northwestern seriously as one of the three best teams but no more. They blitzed perennial champion Maryland yesterday 81-58, even though the Terps lost only one senior off last year's team. Northwestern's secret apparently is a constant all-out press, which bothered Maryland into 24 turnovers. Iowa winning there on Sunday would make up for the bad loss at Nebraska last Saturday, but our guards will have to be crisper.

Against pressing defenses, Gabbie Marshall needs to get more minutes. She might be the best ball-handler on the team and always plays under control. Forget she is a freshman, forget it is an "away" game... neither matters any more than a warm can of spit!

Yeah, NW snuck up on me. They usually remind me of Iowa teams from 12-13 years ago, solid bigs and OK guards but without the athleticism to make noise in the NCAA. Their resume so far has been very impressive. Lost to DePaul, but the Blue Demons are good almost every year.

We're about to see what she can do! I think she'll be solid.

Northwestern's half court defense against Maryland is what impressed me the most. They play together and their zone as well as player defense is extremely active playing with their arms up and jumping passing lanes making any pass difficult. Maryland couldn't make a shot even when wide open and their FR point guard Owusu was bottled up all game too. Turnovers can be an issue for Iowa and they will have to value each possession in this game taking care of the ball.

Did the girl from WDM Valley play. If so, how did she do?

They could. We are better than I expected. We are always tough at home. We have one of the best home court atmosphere in the Big 10. Always a good time. Have to be very good to beat us at home.

I think this Iowa team will go undefeated at home again this season. Two veteran guards and a center that shoots 75% is a lethal combination, plus with Olinger getting 10+ rebounds a game.
I'd take that bet. We're still very reliant on 3-pt shooting. One cold shooting night against a decent team (there are lots of more than decent teams on the home schedule) and we lose. Heck, we could shoot well / play well and still lose, and there would be no shame in that. We have the #12 and #14 teams in the country coming in this week!

  • Maryland is 2-2 on the road this season with losses to Northwestern (81-58) and NC State (66-59).

THE SERIES
  • Maryland leads the all-time series, 6-3.
  • Iowa saw Maryland twice during the 2018-19 season, sweeping the Terps for the first time in a season, including an 86-73 win on Feb. 17 and in the Big Ten Tournament title game (March 10), 90-76.
  • Senior Kathleen Doyle averaged 12.5 points and 4.5 assists per game last season against the Terps.

Wow, Sevillian the savior at the end of the game vs Maryland! Hit a big three after having just missed two in row to break the tie, then hit a jumper with the shot clock going down after shaking off a defender, and finally capped off the night with two big free throws.

Versus Indiana I hope Czinano can score more than 4 points. Does Indiana have a big athletic center like Maryland?

In a word no. They play a bunch of 6"0" players around a 6'3" post. They are not deep but play excellent defense. We need to limit turnovers and bring our defensive intensity. If we hit some shots we should be in it with a good chance to win.

A bunch of upsets tonight. UConn lost at home to Baylor, which I don't really think was an upset with Baylor's Lauren Cox back from injury. #9 NC State, #10 Texas A&M, and #11 Florida State all lost to unranked opponents.

I hope we don’t see another game like that this season. 26 points with 77% shooting followed by 40 points and 31% (13 of 41) for the final three quarters. But they played tough defense. Maryland’s full court press took its tool, but we persevered. Ollinger and Sevillian get extra-credit pats on the back.

Maryland stepped up on defense after the first quarter. They did the same in their last game against Ohio State after trailing by double digits and won going away. It seemed that Maryland players got tired playing defense though, so they could never get their shooting going, not helped by their own turnovers and 8 blocks by Ollinger.

Here's my recap of Iowa's win over Maryland. As others have said, this might be the strangest game I've seen. Not sure a team has ever won with 23 turnovers, 38 offensive rebounds surrendered, and 34 fewer shot attempts.

We also shouldn't lose sight of how big the win is for the program. Iowa was projected as a bubble team this year. This win shows it can compete at the top of the conference again, even without Megan. And that's great news both this year and long term (for recruiting).

Strangest game ever. Has a team ever been out-rebounded by 24, turn the ball over 23 times and win?

Maryland with 84 shots to Iowa's 50. I have no idea when was the last time that ever happened to anybody. Kudos to the whole team, and I really have to give credit to Kathleen. She was beat out there, and sick with a cold, and throwing up something at the 1:54 mark in the 4th quarter. She is one tough cookie. I think all of Marylands seven 2 pt FGs in the 1st quarter except for the 2 - 3s were second chance points. Ugh!

Just to add, not to complain but there were some head scratcher calls out there. And there was a lot and I mean a lot of body up defense by Maryland that the refs let go.

They didn't just win without Megan, they won without any center. Czinano was in foul trouble and barely played/contributed.

You knew that would be the case as soon as you saw who the referees were last night. Mark Zentz and Jesse Dickerson are two of many long time refs in the Big Ten who allow, as you say, body up defense in the post to Iowa's detriment. Then Iowa gets called for touch fouls. They did well to overcome it.

Honestly, I was glad Czinano got into foul trouble. Maryland is basically the worst possible match up for her strengths and weaknesses. The rebounding wasn't great with Ollinger and Warnock on the floor, but Maryland was killing them when Czinano was in.

I'm interested to see how she adjusts next time they play Maryland. Aside from this game, Czinano has been great all year. Her offense has grown significantly from last year. Hopefully she can develop more defensively and in rebounding, too.
