WBB opens season with first practice

Ally didn't play as noted. She will for the opener next Friday. Starters were Chase, Kali, Whit, Lex, and Christina.
Kali got them off to a good start, scoring the first six points and grabbing three rebounds,
Both posts played well. Chase had 9, and a bunch of blocks. Megan had 19 on power from the inside.
Whit didn't shoot a lot, and had a couple shots wiped out. Both Whit and Tania focused on running the offense at first. Tania went into scoring mode later on and finished in double figures. Lex had 16, I think, after starting out cold.
Christina seemed a bit rusty after healing. Carly was active but rushed her shots. Hannah and Tagyn got good minutes.Claire was solid.
Nicole and Hailey got in at the end.
Kali 17 and 6 reb Final score 95-41.
Chase 9 and 7 with 4 blocks
Megan a double-double 19 and 11 with 3 blocks
Tania 14 with 7 assists
Whit 4 assist and 4 steals
The team had 26 assists and only 9 turnovers.

Just noted, we need to find a different handle for Sevillian next year or we'll end up with two Lexes in the back court.

6-21 from three. As oak said, Whit didn't shoot much so she'll probably help with that. Only one Peacock over 6 ft, and that just barely. Be interesting to see if Megan's shot, which starts quite low, will work against taller foes.

Next year they will have an Alexa and an Alexis. Have to sort that out.
They did make a couple of threes that were waved off.
A couple of nice hustle plays...one by Tania to save a pass that was going out of bounds for a lay-up to a trailer, and one by Kali running down a loose ball and throwing it off a Peacock while sliding out of bounds.

Listened to Jan Jensen today on KGYM. She said they were happy about getting everyone in for the exhibition. Said Ally hasn't practiced yet but should tomorrow.
Talked about Megan and how she loves to learn and is a great kid. Mentioned rebounding and defense as two things they need to improve to offset the loss of last years seniors. Said they really like the 2016 class. Mentioned they will probably use an eight player rotation against top foes (at least to start) and use more when possible.
North Dakota is the first regular season opponent. They have a 6-6 center. Jan talked about Chase and Megan getting a chance to face someone taller.
North Dakota returns their top two scorers and the newcomer pf the year from last years Big Sky conference. Their leading scorer is preseason POY for the Big Sky.

The MBB is listed as ESPN3 on Friday, BTN Sunday. WBB is radio only.

Latest on top-25 2016 prospect Tyasha Harris — no plans to sign early & no visits scheduled right now; may set up some February visits.

I am 'going out on a limb' to make some predictions for this season. Even though this team will start the season with a lot less starting experience, I think they have more talent (quality depth) on the bench then ever before and because of that I expect them to make tremendous strides and steady improvement throughout the course of the season. Furthermore, although I believe they can beat everyone on their non-conference schedule, their are a couple of games that could [statistically] go either way. I predict that they will be no worse than 10-2. Their conference schedule is favorable also. They will have Maryland and OSU only at CHA. Their away only games are winnable. If they can continue to make rapid improvement I believe they can finish 15-3. I can 'see' Lisa getting B1G COY and at least one freshman possibly two getting a post season award.

My hopes are high and I think all fans should have high hopes too. I encourage everyone to try to see them play in CHA at every opportunity. I would like to see at least 6000 at every game. More fans in the stands means better home arena advantage. They deserve our support.

Go Hawks!

ESPNW came out with their pre-season predictions for the Big Ten. They have Iowa 9th.
They have some teams that Iowa swept last season, that also lost multiple players, picked ahead of the Hawks. I think ESPNW doesn't know much about the big Ten.
I'm hoping for a top 5 finish, 20+ wins, and a NCAA appearance. In other words, a normal Iowa season.

Radio call by Brent and Kathryn Reynolds tonight. Brent and Stacy Schlapkohl on Sunday.

The Hawks opened the regular season with a 83-61 win, after only leading by two at half.
The difference between the halves was that the officials finally started yo call all the fouls North Dakota was committing.
Iowa was led by Ally Disterhoft with 20. Kali Peschel had a great game with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Iowa had three others in double figures. Whit Jennings had 14, Megan Gustafson had 12 (and 7 rebounds) and Christina Buttenham provided a big spark with 10.
Ally's 20 left her just 3 points short of 1,000.

UT Martin , today's opponent, hit 18 threes and forced 26 TOs to blow out North Dakota yesterday. They got killed on the boards but won by about 40. Scored 28 points off the turnovers by full court pressing.

Hawks beat the Skyhawks of UT Martin 62 to 56. The game was tight throughout and tied at the half. At the start Iowa trailed 10 to 0. Iowa's 3-pointers weren't falling. However at crunch time in the 4th quarter Kastanek drilled two consecutive threes to give Iowa some breathing room. Davis played much better, while Jennings didn't score a point, the complete opposite of Friday. It's such a close game that none of Mohns, Stewart or Larson saw the court.

The Hawks started the game trying to force the ball inside to Chase. But she was fading away with her shots and not hitting. They also were called for a couple charges and two fouls each on Chase, Megan, and Claire. So they went with Ally and Kali guarding the inside and Christina on the perimeter.
Tania hit two 3pt shots and got them going. I'm not sure why Whit did not try to score, she only took 4 shots all game. Tania and Megan again played well from the bench. So did Christina.
Ally was tournament MVP, Kali and Megan also made the team.

Chase actually played quite well. Lex hit two key 3-pointers. Lisa pulling Whit about a minute into the second half and read the riot act to her on the bench in a way that I haven't seen in all her years here. Don't know what that was about.

Chase did much better once she started using some shot fakes and taking the ball to the hoop rather than shooting fade aways.
Should mention that Ally scored her 1,000th point tonight.

The Hawks got a tying 3 pointer by Whit Jennings withe seconds to go in regulation, then won by 15 in OT. Iowa had a 13 point lead at the half but Western Illinois got unconscious in the 4rd quarter and the hawks couldn't get a call on inside drives and suddenly they were down by 5. They got it to two with 11 seconds left, then fouled. The Western girl made the first but mused the second. Iowa got the rebound and called time out, setting up Whitney with long three that was all net.
The Hawks then dominated the 'OT and won 96-81.
Megan Gustafson had 23 points and 9 rebounds. She hit 10-14 FG. Ally had 21. Chase started in the post and hit 6-9 for 13. Whit had 10, and Lex had 13. Kali had an off night but hit a big 3 in'OT

Megan has been impressive so far and give them an physical presence inside they've been lacking. She started and played ahead of Chase the entire OT instead of Chase who played a nice game too. Oak, do you think we'll see Megan starting instead of Chase before too long?

Whitney hits the three with 5 seconds left to force overtime. A couple of feet beyond the arc, and perfect form.

Oak- Is Larsen and Stewart going to redshirt?

Realistically, just don't see many minutes for them

Both Hannah and Tagyn have played, so they won't RS, barring injury. Lisa mentioned that Hannah Stewart is learning a new position, more on the perimeter. she played inside in HS. Tagyn had a foot injury this summer and is behind on learning the system

I forgot that W. Ill missed one of those free throws just a moment earlier. Had she made both we'd been toast.

As the coaches said in post-game, we were way too 3 happy. Especially considering we weren't making any. We had a huge height advantage in the middle. I'd like to think these teams we're playing are really good, but TN Tech went and lost their next game at home to Ark St.

I think that is a mistake on LB not to RS those 2.

Barring injury, I don't see them cracking the top 10 this year

But then they use scholarships for 5 years instead of 4. With the way recruiting is going (well) they should keep it going.
And, as Lisa said, save the RS for injuries.

I'll buy the saving the RS for injuries. Both quality recruits, so I wouldn't be pushing them out of Iowa city already

Megan only played 10 minutes due to fouls. She had a two and another possible three point play wiped out by some sketchy call.
Lex was 8-8 from the field, including 4-4 from 3pt.22 points a career high.
Chase played very well, 16 points and 14 rebounds. Ally had 15
