WBB Recruiting 2017 and On

If things stay as they are now, the classes next year are:

SR: Kathleen, Mak, Amanda
JR: Alexis, Paula, (Zion)
SO: Monika, Logan, Tomi
FR: Megan, McKenna, Gabbie, Kate

We'll have 12 or 13 scholarship players depending on Zion's status. Our 3 2020 commits would replace the 3 outgoing seniors, so we'd either have 2 or 3 more scholarships we could use in the 2020 class, though Coach Bluder doesn't typically go to 15. It seems like some of the 2020 recruits we're in on would be worth breaking Coach's traditional use of scholarships.

As for Zion, jockos is right about Coach's language regarding her scholarship. Conceptually, I'm not really sure how that would work, though. Last year the decision to put her on scholarship appears to have been made in late February. Do they really wait that long, then apply it retroactively each year? Have they moved the decision date up? I have no idea.

Zion's scholarship was applied retroactively for last season. She was given the scholarship due to her stepping up with all the guard injuries last season, that is why it was so late. For this season Lisa most likely would have made that decision in the summer but nothing was ever announced. She looked good early this season shooting the ball when Kathleen was out and always appears under control. I think she can definitely help the team next season especially in 4 guard sets.

Sharon Goodman 6-3 instate post has committed as has 6'0 Shateah Wetering, I've seen her listed anywhere from 5'11 - 6'1. Here are the '20 bigs I know they are recruiting, there are likely others...

Taylor Lauterbach 6'6 Appleton, WI - Offered. Wisconsin just offered, as have Marquette, Iowa St, Kansas St, Illinois. Think Wisconsin and Kansas St. may lead right now at least.

Cameron Williams 6'2 Chicago, IL - Offered, highly sought after recruit, #18 overall prospect by ESPN. Has a lot of offers from ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 12, & most of the BIG too.

Madeline Westbeld 6'2 Kettering, OH - Offered, sister played at Notre Dame & #45 overall prospect by ESPN.

Lauren Ware 6'3 Bismark, ND - Offered, highly sought after yet to decide between volleyball or basketball, #38 overall prospect by ESPN.

Annika Stewart 6'3 Wayzata, MN - Not sure if she has an offer, she is Hannah's sister. Has a Minnesota offer reportedly, good shooter.
Williams or Ware would be very good gets.

It's no secret that Coach Bluder's traditional mindset has been that bigger posts cannot get up and down the court fast enough to play her preferred style. Gustafson has proven that doesn't have to be the case.

This is going to be a telling time for the program. On the heels of (arguably) not just the best player in the history of the program, but the best in the nation....if you are ever going to continue the level of athlete at that position, now would be it.

The frontcourt has often suffered from a lack of physicality. Having at least one "banger" in the group is almost a necessity.

It will be interesting to see the roster(s) put together moving forward.

I thought Zion looked good in the non-conference, too. I figured she'd see at least a few minutes a game in conference play, but it just hasn't happened.

As for next year, I still think minutes will be hard to come by for her. Kathleen and Mak take two guard spots, and will play most of the game. Tomi moved ahead of her on the depth chart for at least part of the year, and probably will moving forward. I'd guess Kate is ahead of her too when healthy. That puts her no higher than 5th on the depth chart, and she'll be competing for that spot with Megan, Gabbie, and Logan, who all probably have higher upside.

Non-Poster do you know where Iowa sits with some of these prospects? Clark, Parrish, Kapinus, Calhoun, etc... Always good to get your perspective!

Is Iowa looking at/recruiting 2022 Emma Ingersoll-Weng? Tania replied to a tweet of hers saying that she’d seen her play and to keep believing; if she does and keeps working she’ll be on the big stage one day. Has anyone seen her play?

I have not heard of her before. I searched on the web and saw her currently playing at IC West High. Some other story seems to indicate her family moved here from the San Diego area.

I know coach Fitz knows about her & if players on the team do as well I'd say she is being looked at. At pg Iowa has 2 incoming recruits & are in on 2 pg's in 2020 who are top 15 overall in their class. Looking forward to hearing more about her & it is great to have good up & coming talent in Iowa City/Cedar Rapids areas.

Ingersoll is a gritty defender. Her size works against her but she's also tuff! Tania's size didn't stop her from getting recruited. If Emma develops into a floor general and outside shooter she'll get plenty of attention being in IC.

Ingersoll will have to overcome 2022 PG Ava Hawthorne, if Hawks need a PG in that class. Looks like Hawthorne played with Stuelke for All Iowa Attack at some point. Unless Clarke picks Iowa, who'd lock up the position through 2024. I think Clarke leaves but there's rumors Iowa's still in play. With Davis graduating this year and Doyle next year, Clarke could play right away.

Clark very much so has Iowa a finalist. Top 3 I say and have heard, top 2.

Thank you - good info, all! Getting Clark would be awesome, so it’s good to know we’re still in the mix with her. If not Clark, getting Kapinus would be excellent.

Doyle and Davis are thriving in the current two point guard system. Get Clark and Kapinus and Iowa has another dynamo duo but a foot taller!

I heard during the state tournament Iowa, Oregon, or Notre Dame. Clark would do well from day 1 in the Iowa system. I posted earlier Iowa is still in on Leilani Kapinus out of Wisconsin a 2020 PG ranked in the ESPN top 10.

Replace Oregon with Iowa State and you re much closer to her top 3.

My hope is Lisa can get at least one and possibly two forwards/centers. I would think any center or forward looking at Iowa, would be impressed by the work of Hannah and Megan. Good guards and shooters are great, don't get me wrong, but the need is for a good center IMHO.

I don't mean to be negative in regard to anyone on the team (next year), however given the current roster and recruits, I think we will be out-womaned on the front line next year. Clearly, the offense will be revised to be more guard oriented. However, both defensively and in rebounding, I question how we get the job done? A real challenge as I see it!

I would admire Clark or any top recruit who chose Iowa (or Iowa State) over schools like UConn and Notre Dame given the women's basketball landscape currently. Tonight's game with Baylor shows why. The best Iowa team of my lifetime would've needed a perfect game to even keep that one close. The talent gap is just so great. If you come to Iowa, you're signing up for a project to truly compete for a national title.

That being said, there's a ton of potential reward there if you make that decision and do well. Megan Gustafson is going to be a legend at Iowa for years and years to come. She came here and excelled when it wasn't expected, and did so with class all along the way. At UConn or Notre Dame, top players are just one of many All-Americans. They have to do even more to stand out.

Wrong. Not going to Iowa State period. That I do know.

No hate coming at you, but do you think Oregon is more probable than ISU? You sound pretty confident on your no ISU comment. If you are correct, then I would replace ISU with either Creighton or Drake. Either way, top 2 are all we are talking about.

I still put ISU at three behind Notre Dame and Iowa, but interested in who you would say is third in the picture.

You aren't being negative. There was always going to be a void given that arguably the best player in program history (and inarguably the best post player) is leaving, along with another senior starter who averaged double figures.

Next year will definitely be a rebuild of some sort. Bluder and her staff do a good job of recruiting to their system and in creating a team atmosphere where players understand roles and get better. If the team is in a position to be on the bubble for a NCAA tournament berth next year, that would be an amazing job by Bluder. There are good players coming in, but counting on freshmen to play at a high level right away isn't a pathway to success. But hopefully the great season the team had will make Iowa more appealing to the good players that Iowa is recruiting now.

When I posted what I heard at the state tournament it was from sitting near a group of Dowling fans who based on how they were talking were parents of players on the team. The three schools they spoke about at halftime were Oregon, Notre Dame, and Iowa.

With the commitment of Minnesota's Paige Bueckers (PG & #1 overall player in 2020) to UCONN this week it did nothing to hurt Notre Dame's chances with Caitlin. After seeing what Iowa accomplished this season I hope she stay's home and picks Iowa.

She would be great, but we need a center or two.
.
We need a center--IF--we run the same offense. Coach's changed the offense a couple years ago to fit their post players. If they need to be more guard oriented i think they'll do what they need to, to be successful.

My apologies. In the end she may say Iowa State was a finalist, but I have heard (not directly from her) that she won’t be going there. The same for Creighton and Drake. I believe it is Notre Dame and Iowa. But, she has not taken any of her 5 official visits yet, so the recruitment remains fluid until those are finished up.

Good insight! I am hearing the same about the top 2, but consider ISU a possible option as her brother is on the football team there. Hoping she chooses to be a Hawkeye!

Reposting this comment from the previous recruiting thread. We can look forward to seeing her this fall. She has more recently been listed as 5’9”. This is from about four years ago...

G Gabbie Marshall– Mason, OH (Cincinnati Heat Premier): As Dicky V would say, she is a “PTPer.” She has the goods. She can shoot the 3 off the catch or dribble. Has a very good handle and can create for herself and others. Shines at either guard spot. High basketball IQ. Defensively she has quick hands and anticipates well. Elite skills for such an early age. At 5’-7” she has the skill and potential to play at the college level right now.

From the Appleton, WI Post-Crescent Newspaper...

Callie Genke, So., Freedom, 6-0, guard: Unanimous first-team all-NEC selection and first-team WBCA all-state pick in Division 3. … Honorable-mention selection on the Associated Press all-state team. … Averaged 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in leading the Irish to the D3 state semifinal. ... Division I college recruit with offers from Wisconsin, Marquette, Louisville, UW-Green Bay, Iowa and Illinois.

All-Area girls basketball: Monona Grove's McKenna Warnock is player of the year

[...] Monona Grove senior McKenna Warnock lifted her game and the Silver Eagles to new heights this season. [... they] claimed the Badger South title with a 12-2 record, went 20-3 overall and rose as high as No. 2 in the Division 2 state rankings.

Warnock, a 6-foot, 2-inch guard/forward, was a dominant force. She averaged 29.7 points (third-best in the state), 12.5 rebounds (10th-best in the state), 3.2 assists, 1.7 steals and two blocks per game.

She also received plenty of individual acclaim. Warnock, a University of Iowa commit, was recognized as the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year and the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s “Miss Basketball.” Warnock now adds another honor: The Wisconsin State Journal All-Area girls basketball player of the year.

“[...]” Monona Grove coach Tyler Kuehl said. “I think she deserves it. Her statistics this year were incredible [...] McKenna was our driving force in winning 20 games and a conference championship this year.”

Warnock, a first-team selection on The Associated Press all-state team and a unanimous choice on the WBCA Division 2 all-state team, ended her prep career with 2,311 points. She finished as Monona Grove’s all-time leader in scoring for boys or girls, and in rebounding for the girls program.

She said she became stronger and more mentally prepared playing AAU basketball for Wisconsin Flight Elite last summer, and those improvements translated into better play during her high school season.

Kuehl said he felt fortunate “to coach a once-in-a-generation talent. She will go down as one of the best players ever in our state,” Kuehl said. “She finishes seventh all-time in scoring, [...] She has clearly cemented herself in Wisconsin basketball history, and McKenna's career accomplishments against high level competition are affirmation for why she is so deserving of all the honors she has received this year.”

Warnock said she was honored and thankful to receive such statewide recognition among “an amazing class” of seniors that included Shemera Williams of Milwaukee Science, Sydnee Roby of Milwaukee King and Sydney Hilliard of Monroe.

“For me, it’s never about getting the awards and the accolades, it means more to me to have the experiences with my teammates during the high school season,” she said. “Sure, you dream of being Miss Basketball, but it’s the memories you make with your family and your teammates that you will remember and that mean the most.”

[...]

The Silver Eagles earned a top seed for postseason, but were edged by DeForest 44-42 in a regional final.

Nevertheless, Monona Grove exceeded expectations and Warnock was the chief reason, often putting up staggering numbers, such as her 39-point, 29-rebound performance in an 80-78 regular-season victory over Williams and Milwaukee Academy of Science.

“I think it was amazing,” Warnock said of the Silver Eagles’ season. “Honestly, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to as a team, but we did amazing. I’m so proud of the team and how we did this year and how much we overcame. …We just came out and played every game like it was our last.”

Monona Grove's McKenna Warnock receives 'Miss Basketball' honor from WBCA

ASHWAUBENON -- Monona Grove senior McKenna Warnock received another state honor on Saturday. The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association named Warnock as the state’s “Miss Basketball,” presenting the 6-foot-2 guard/forward with the award as the top girls basketball player during Saturday’s state tournament at the Resch Center. Warnock was honored at halftime of the Division 3 title game between Marshall and Laconia.

On Friday, Warnock was named the Gatorade girls basketball player of the year for Wisconsin for the 2018-19 season, the Gatorade Company announced Friday.

"I think she is totally deserving," Kuehl said after Warnock received the Gatorade honor. “McKenna Warnock is just an all-around excellent player,” DeForest coach Jerry Schwenn said in the Gatorade release. “It’s very hard to match up with her athleticism. She’s physical, she can rebound and she has unlimited range as a shooter.”

Monona Grove's McKenna Warnock selected as Miss Basketball by the WBCA

Monona Grove's McKenna Warnock has been named the 2019 Miss Basketball award-winner by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, sponsored by JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. Warnock, a 6-foot-2 wing, is dynamic and versatile player that can score in a variety of ways. She can get to the hoop off the dribble, pull up from mid-range, score from a post up, knock down the three ball. McKenna is also a very good rebounder and her length causes problems on the defensive end of the floor. She had seven games with at least 35 points this season, and tied her career high with 44 points in a 79-62 win over McFarland in December. Warnock shot 51.6 percent from the floor, 78.4 percent from the free throw line, and went 71-for-182 from behind the arc this season. She finishes her career with 2,311 points, 954 rebounds, 243 assists, 177 steals and 159 blocks.
