WBB summer 2015

It didn't sound too serious. She doesn't have a sling or anything. More of a precaution.
Christina has a lighter boot on than she had a week ago.

Lots of BiG womens' teams taking advantage of the early practice afforded by overseas trips.

Nebraska went to Austrailia (finished 1-3 Down Under)
Ohio State Brazil/Argentina
Purdue - Italy
Illini - France
Michigan State - Bahamas

Who would Michigan State play in the Bahamas?

I know she was in a sling that day, after the shoulder was popped back in. Glad she has it off now.

They are done with Rome. Now on to Florence and the first game action. Starts at 11 am Central. 6pm Florence time.

Hawkeye women look to define roles on Italy trip

Excerpt

This season the Hawkeyes have one of the most versatile rosters in Bluder's 16-year tenure. The Hawkeyes have three players capable of playing point guard in Jennings, junior Alexa Kastanek and freshman Tania Davis that all are under 5-foot-11. Iowa also has three post players over 6-foot-3 in senior Nicole Smith, sophomore Chase Coley and freshman Megan Gustafson. The other eight players on the Iowa roster are all between 6-foot-0 and 6-foot-2 and capable of playing a variety of positions. The veteran coach plans to begin tinkering with personal groupings during the three games of the 11-day Italy trip.

"We kind of say that we play position-less basketball," Bluder said. "We don't care who is on the floor. We could have three point guards, we could have three forwards on the floor, we just put the best players on the floor and we have that type of team now. Being able to go over there and it doesn't count on our record and we can see who works well together and see who steps up," Bluder said. "It's very different. We are going to have to really think more as coaches as far as lineups and rotations."

My (mostly rambling) thoughts
First, from her comments, Lisa believes she has a versatile roster. Still it is not likely IMO that she would "have three forwards on the floor" at once unless she is talking about having a forward playing at center, which is entirely possible since the only center listed on the roster is Nicole. (That said, Megan could be listed as a 'C' or at least a 'F/C')
Second, although Alexa played some point guard as a freshman behind Samantha, I would guess that she will play mainly at the #2 wing position, leaving the point to Whitney and Tania. (If, as she said, Lisa decides to "have three point guards", Alexa would essentially be the '3'. I believe Lisa would do this in late game situations and at the end of the first half. Also, I would be surprised if Tania starts with Whitney but I believe they will share some court time when Lisa goes with her 'three point guard' line-up.
Next, regarding the post, Nicole unfortunately was never the same player after her HS ACL injury. Also, Lisa said last year that Chase was being groomed to replace Bethany (even though she could almost certainly play the #4 stretch forward/big wing position. She had a 3-pointer in the game yesterday that had perfect rotation.) That leaves only Megan as the most natural true post player. Lisa also could choose to play Hannah in the post as a third option which will free Claire to concentrate at the #4 position.
Finally, Iowa is 'loaded' with forwards. However, although Ally technically started at the '4', she is listed as a guard and will probably be the '3' this year. Also, though Christina is listed as a forward, she is not that different than Ally and likely will be her back-up. (IMO, they could both be listed on the roster as combination 'G/F'). That leaves Kali, Claire, Carly, Tagyn and Hannah who are IMO all natural forwards ('3' and/or '4') and Chase who I think is an ideal stretch 4.
So, in conclusion, while Iowa's strength/experience is at guard (Whitney, Ally and Alexis), their depth is at forward. I would add that not only does this team have over-all depth, it also has balance (quality depth). That is why I believe the starters will have fewer minutes and the bench will have more minutes than last years team.
