We have to recruit some DT's that can get to the passer or

Bazata was a true DT and he is a 3rd year starter, Ekakitie was a DE not a DT. Carl Davis didn't do much till his RSJR Year, Johnson didn't start till his RSJR Year.
Lattimore is ahead of both of these just because he doesn't have dbl digit sack numbers doesn't mean he is failing as a DT.
Iowa right now is T-12 in Scoring defense, the good news is that the DL will return 7 of the top 8 DL man. DE Anthony Nelson leads the team in sacks with 6.

I'm not arguing that Lattimore is a bad DT or that he won't continue to improve. I just mean that Iowa's recruiting has been very light at that position. Even if Ekakaitie was recruited as a DE, he had more of a DT body. Lattimore could probably be a good run-stuffing DE who could be subbed in passing situations. Iowa could have used him that way if they were deeper at DT. They're not, it is what it is, and I'll hope he continues to improve. Iowa needs him to improve because Bazata's gone next year.

Do you really think out of 130 teams Iowa is the only program that develops players? Every team has to do some developing and most teams have to do more of it than Iowa.
Kirk's kool-aid causes reality distortion for soooooooo many within the fanbase.

I'm not following your line of argument. My point was that it's rare for Iowa to land a guy like A.J. Epenesa, a guy ready to play right away. Lattimore was not a guy who was ready to play, but had to play because Iowa was so thin at DT. If Iowa had more depth at the position, that wouldn't have happened. It doesn't look like Iowa's developed many guys into good DTs other than Jaleel Johnson the past few years. I would think that there would be other guys ready to plug-in and play after losing two senior DTs last year. Not so much. It's hardly the worst problem on the team and I feel like I'm nitpicking because the defense isn't the real problem at all. It's the offense and special teams. I have no idea what's going on. My hope (though I think it's a fantasy) is that BF is trying to implement an offensive system that doesn't really fit with the current personnel on the roster. That's the only positive thing I can think of when it comes to why the offense sucks so badly. Most of my other thoughts are not so nice (and I think they're more likely to be true).
