"We just knew they didn't wanna play defense"

Actually, defense is where you rest so you are fresh when you run the other way after an opponent make! ;)

Also, don't wanna get that 2nd foul in the first half so don't do ANYTHING that might look like a foul!!!

I'm sure glad Payton was resting on defense. He was a force!

In fairness to Payton, I think he gives good effort. His shot selection makes him either a big plus or a huge negative on offense. So far this year, it has been mostly very negative. His inability to guard anyone with decent athleticism hurts on defense.

You guys put up a helluva effort tonight.

Wisconsin shot great but the defensive game wasn’t really any worse than most fran coached games. They just shot well.
Fran just has a horrific defensive philosophy.
His philosophy is to not over-complicate things. After every made free throw 1-2-2 ‘press’. Then, either man-to-man or zone. They’re equally inept in both, but he will mix it up to make it look like he’s trying to adjust.

I agree with this but does not change the fact he should be sitting more if not hitting 3's

Wasn't it Alfords team that was repeatedly lit up from 3 late in the game against Northwestern State when IOWA was a 3 seed 2005-06? Wasn't the only time during Steve's tenure that the deep ball was not well defended.
Still too soon

It will be interesting to see if they play a little harder on D after being called out nationally!
excited questioning GIF by South Park

What a slap in our face! Our players and coaches should be embarrassed!!
Beth better be seeing this!
To have a player from another team actually say something like this should be a "Come to Jesus" type moment for any team. If it doesn't improve, they just don't give a sh$t about it and nothing will change.

Did they ever give up 100+ to Wisconsin?
Lick's teams played at a snails pace compared to this team. i understand your point but the style of play of the two teams is not really comparable. Lick's teams giving up more than a hundred had more to do with they just plain were awful. I don't think Fran's teams give a sh$t about defense.

The defensive effort will improve for a few games but ultimately Fran doesn't give a shit about defense.

Intellectually he understands it matters but emotionally he doesn't care about it that's why it never changes.

His program has a culture of indifference to defense because he's indifferent.

Evidently RU not interested in playing defense vs badgers either as badgers shooting 58% in first half without going to free throw line once.
43-34 badgers at half.
RU plays slower pace than Iowa so badgers might not get 100 tonite.

I think Payton will smarten up and dish out for a better shot too important of a game

That is how he recruits i am sure

Fran leaves his defensive intensity up to his players but offensive is all about him

Second to coaching horrific defense Fran’s biggest failure as a coach is with the hook. His biggest motivator is the bench and he has never used it effectively. In fact he has often used it in a counter productive way.
He uses the bench to punish turnovers and fouls. That's why you don't see many of either.

If playing time was tied to defense you would see an amazing improvement.

I thought the 2011-12 or 2012-13 (the one that lost to MSU) teams were the best defense under Fran.

It's not good when your players are looking over to the bench immediately after making mistakes like they're expecting to get pulled. Guys start to play tight. I think Fran has done this to a number of guys over the years.

good story previewing the IU game.

some excerpts:

Iowa basketball remains motivated after Wisconsin loss

A video clip from after last week's loss to Wisconsin circulated on social media and made its way inside the Iowa program this week.

The Hawkeyes allowed a season-worst 116 points in Madison, letting the Badgers make a program-record 21 3-pointers and shoot an outrageous 67.7% from deep. After the game, a comment by Wisconsin guard Kamari McGee gained traction on the internet.

“Once we realized that they were just coming in here to try to outscore us and they didn’t really care much about the defensive end, we took advantage of that,” McGee said. “We didn’t know we were going to shoot this great tonight. But we trust our teammates. We trust the players. So we know we can score the ball in bunches. We just knew that they didn’t want to play defense and all we had to do was play a little bit more defense than them and the game is ours.”

Iowa assistant coach Courtney Eldridge showed the video to the team.

“It kinda resonated with our team,” sophomore Owen Freeman said. “It kinda set us off a little bit. So obviously that kinda amplified our defense and it’s something we really wanted to hone in and focus on.”

Is it sustainable? Hawks are still an abysmal 312th in the NCAA for scoring defense, giving up 78/game.

Just bumping this for the upcoming game.

Sometimes when you have to morph your lineup to replace what seems like a gaping hole (i.e.. Freeman), it creates a new dynamic. It makes scouting you a little more unsure. You *have* to get better defensively to make up for the lost offense, at least theoretically. Doesn't really seem like Fran's MO, though...
