Smh. The debt went up $8T under Trump in four years. 4.2T of which came in 2020. The debt has gone up $7.2T under Biden through May of 2024. Tax receipts from the federal government have gone from 3.33T in 2017 to 4.9T in 2023. Through May of 2024 they sit at 4.44T. I will let you guess what the only year they went down was.
All of which makes my point. This is why it is impossible to take the team blue and team red seriously. Both are responsible and make irrational arguments to say it is the others fault. The OP is right, we aren’t a serious country anymore.

Our 2023 deficit was 1.7 trillion. Our entire budget for discretionary spending including 100% of defense and virtually every other department was 1.7 trillion in 2023.
So assuming you cannot touch mandatory spend items like Medicare or social security you would have to fire every member of the military, the entire judiciary, and every government bureaucrat to get to a balanced budget if you don’t raise taxes.
It is the height of stupidity to believe the bullshit some folks on the right say on this. As much as I would want to, we cannot keep taxes this low forever. You choose: kill most of social security and Medicare or raise taxes.
