Why go up against Midlands? You are asking most teams to take an extra flight when it is hard enough to get to Chicago this time of year. This would be a great early-season tournament. Would be nice to see our main lineup against decent competition early in the year to see where we stand. Used to wrestle in 2 or 3 high-quality tournaments before the new year. Omaha, Northern Open, UNI open, Midlands. We need a good early-season tournament in the midwest again. Like it or not Midlands kinda has a handle on the Xmas Midwest tournament.

I totally agree with what you're saying, but this was put together because of what happened with Midlands last year. As long as it's in the Chicago area, and/or controlled by Northwestern, that kind of thing could happen at any time, and we can't lose the only two-day tournament we go to. I realize they had the tournament anyway without Northwestern's influence/control, but only after several teams canceled their travel and therefore had to pull out. We need to go to a tournament that we can count on happening.
I hope this tournament grows and becomes as big as Midlands. The Southern Scuffle started with nothing and has enjoyed some pretty good years.
As I said, I'll miss my Midlands trips, but let's get behind this and help it succeed.

The southern scuffle made sense as an alternative to Midlands. A few more days after Christmas and farther south. Making it a better option for a lot of teams. Why do we have to encourage a bad idea? Most of us have to work. It made sense to take some time off for something as good as Midlands. Even if it turns into a semi-success down the road at best we will get 2 watered-down Midwest Christmas tournaments.

I agree with this. Move this up to November and it would have a better turn out.

I used to enjoy driving to Omaha for that early season tourney. That was a fun event.
I think there is a lot of defending the program, and influential people within and related to the program, that are tied to this thing.
If this was going to be a meaningful tournament there should have been some vetting within the wrestling community to gauge interest and see if viable competition would come. They haven't.
It has the making of a marque women's tournament, but maybe just leave it at that and let the men go to Midlands to get a big 10 like tournament feel. Getting easy pins and techs to the semis or finals won't provide for that.

How about we give it more than it’s inaugural year to evaluate? Give it a few years and then reevaluate. Maybe too much logic.

Lmfao. Less is better for the sport with tournaments at this time of the year so that there is more talent per tournament. Doing this for convenience and because Midlands canceled a single time is the dumbest thing I’ve heard and selfish. College wrestling is already dealing with the problem of having less marquee matchups and this will only contribute to it. But by all means, proceed with “any time anywhere…as long as its in our own backyard”
Remember that part of the Soldier Salute is the women's tournament being run alongside the men's, which I think is really cool and adds to the appeal. I hope this can become a premier women's in-season tournament, and that this can help grow the sport of women's wrestling

Well, Tom said in a recent interview they want a Holiday Tournament that they know won't get cancelled. I guess in your opinion that's selfish?? In my opinion he's doing what he feels is best for the team.
Schamberger and Eustice will work their asses off to make sure this tournament ends up at a high level. They won't leave any stone unturned to get teams here.

People on here complaining and saying Midlands is so much better must not remember that Iowa was basically setting scoring records every year the last 4 years we went. Iowa is what made Midlands.
