What happened to Iowa Football

Iowa is really good at branding itself as a physical, hard nose teams when it plays teams that don’t play the same style. However, as we’ve seen against the Wisconsin and Stanford’s of the world, Iowa is a phony physical football team. But thank god Doyle makes $736,837,149 a year. What a joke.

*Edit: forgot to include FCS (!!!) North Dakota State in the list of teams.

Iowa used to punch above their weight, now you look like a 2 star laden team..Maybe Kirk's message is not getting through anymore and it's time to go watch the grandkids grow up.

I am sick to death of KF and his ineptness. I don't care if we come back and win, his team looks awful.

This. Kirk has been here too long. We can spitball all we want about the reasons why but the simple fact is the team is not good nor are they fun to watch. Kirk's system and game plan are stale, boring, and antiquated, and it is painstakingly obvious that will never change.

To be honest, I'm not surprised by what we're seeing at all. I had no expectation that Iowa's game plan would be anything but base 4-3 defense and the same anemic offense with the same issues on the line despite having a month to prepare. Anyone who was expecting Iowa to come in with a fresh game plan and a little innovation is a fool.

Furthermore, after watching the Oline get manhandled all season, it lends serious doubt that Iowa's highly hyped strength and conditioning coach is effective anymore. What we're seeing today isn't about misreads, misassignments, etc.--which you could maybe chalk up to youth. This is about getting whipped and eaten alive at the line of scrimmage. Plain and simple.

So, yes, I think it is painstakingly obvious to everyone in the country (outside the few insane Ferentz apologists) that the game has passed Kirk by. Unfortunately, Iowa's AD is moron, and has ensured the university is hostage to the Ferentzes for the foreseeable future, so mediocrity isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

You are a total idiot.

You are right, he's over a million a year now.

One more half to go to decide the direction Iowa football is headed and it's not looking pretty w/ this BF offense w/ one completion to a wr in the first half - a bubble screen at the line. What a joke. Find you tailback on run and out of the backfield. It's his homecoming, run him into the ground.

Great post...hit the nail on the head.

Just to add, My team is the Cal Bears...So i know soft football when i see it, i've been watching it for the past 20 years.

I agree with you that there are significant problems. I couldn't disagree with you more regarding Doyle. Without Doyle we'd be completely ****ed.

Real question for both sides of the table.

First for the K.F detractors. Who is an alternate that will come to Iowa and be the elixr?

Now for the "apologists". What is K.F showing the last seven years , that proves he is going to make this a program that contends with Wisconsin and possibly a revamped Nebraska in the next five years?
If you think this program is doing fine, cool.

If you think this program is stagnant then what steps does Iowa need to take to get to the next level?

No need to belittle or make light of anyones opinions on the matter.

The obvious point for the knee-jerk fan who always wants a change of quarterback or coach or whatever said fan thinks isn't working is that the alternative doesn't always work out so well. In fact, at times, you can go backwards, as evidenced by Iowa basketball post-Dr. Tom.

With that said, I think we are at a point in Ferentz's tenure where that doesn't really apply in terms of the bigger picture. The fact is Iowa football is stale and stagnant and that won't ever change with the current head coach. At this point, we have more than enough evidence to support that conclusion. The program needs new life, and while it may not be in the best short-term interest of Iowa football it will certainly be best for the long term. Since Ferentz's best days are well behind him, it's time to think long term, IMHO, which is why I believe a coaching change would be appropriate.

Of course, with the gifted contract Barta handed out, all this talk is ostensibly moot.

At this point, I am willing for Iowa to try anyone who is younger and a touch less curmudgeonish.......

- The no Twitter rule is ridiculous. Basically, no Twitter for 4 years? Just hold the kids accountable for what they say instead of shutting it down completely. Many of the kids have a lot of good things to say. Believe it or not, petty sh** like this is a detractor for these kids from a recruiting perspective.

- He hasn't won a bowl game since 2010.......not only that, hasn't even really been competitive until this year.

- Zero innovation offensively or defensively.......seriously, this is big. It makes it especially difficult to recruit speed.........

I think KF has done some good things at Iowa obviously......but, in the sports world, 18/19 years at the same place is just a bit much.

KF, and his boy BF taking Iowa's money and laughing all the way to the bank
Well that's sad considering you pay his salary. Oops I mean you don't, fully funded by the football athletic Revenue. But I do have to say I'm amused everytime I see somebody write something about the coaching staff taking their money like that's all they care about, thats stupid. And not even remotely accurate

I have to wonder how much longer that's going to be true, now that the mandatory donation is no longer tax deductible.

It will be interesting to see how long Ferentz decides to stick around. Does he see a timeframe for his departure or is it just a year to year feeling? Some believe he is grooming his son for the role but that rarely ends well.

At some point he may realize he lacks the desire or energy needed to recruit, gameplan or develop talent. At that point the tough thought of life after football may run through his head.

Paterno would have coached to his death imo. Bowden was forced out and seems content. These guys love their jobs, sometimes they are in denial of their declining results.

Tell that to teams like Nebraska.... a coaching carousel every few years drains the life out of a program. Stability is the answer.

Re: Twitter, do you really want 60 players fighting twitter wars with @$$holes like JBo currently is? Best to keep them off.

It’s a social media ban not full communication ban. If they have something really important to say there are other ways. He brings in high character players for the most part.

Do you think Bill Belichick has been in New England too long? What about Gregg Popovich?

Belichick and Popovich each have 5 rings to their name........are you comparing Ferentz to 2 of the best coaches to ever coach a major sport

You do know that it costs someone more to make a donation and then take that as a tax deduction then to simply pay the taxes on your earnings, right? That is what has been happening, so no, the money isn't that important at this point. There are ways to get around the donation issue. Kirk could simply sign a new contract that requires the University make a donation while taking a corresponding cut in salary.
