What happened to Iowa moving the ball

a specific number of times before shooting?

I seem to recall that a coach tracked and determined that Iowa shoots a much better percentage when the ball moves around a certain number of times before the shot goes up. We seemed to do this a lot more when Iowa was winning and beating teams by double digits. Now it seems guys play one-on-one, stand around or jack it up too early or with the shot clock expiring.

I wish we would move the ball around more like we were earlier in the season. I noticed Indiana was doing this very effectively yesterday.

One main reason is simply scouting, Iowa does not feed the post/have an interior presence that can cause teams to double down and put their defense in a scramble mode where they are chasing the ball as it moves around. It seems to me that teams hedge on the perimeter against Iowa because there is not a low post threat on a consistent basis, It limits your option in cleanly moving the ball around. The Hawks simply do not have a presence inside at either center or power forward that threatens the defense.

Then how were we doing it effectively the first half of the season with the same players?

Again, Scouting, Teams figure out your strengths and weakness', What you do well and what you can't do, Teams adjust their defensive game plans. You want to see the ball moving crisply, Look how often the ball handler has a clear easy pass he can make to initiate the ball flying around from player to player.

A lot of teams Iowa has played recently are begging Iowa to throw the ball into Woodbury. Not sure why Fran doesn't. Teams take away Jok and Uthoff and I'd rather see Woodbury with the ball instead of Clemmons and Gesell. Another factor into post play is the lack of ability from Clemmons and Gesell. They are both poor post passers. Also the guys guarding them can easily sag into that passing lane because they are not a threat to beat you from the outside.

I would agree with this opinion. If we can get some post play, it will open up things from the outside for not only shots but also passing lanes to move the ball. Most opponents have figured out that if they get up and guard us aggressively our only high quality ball handler is Gesell, but he is not going to hurt them consistently going to the rim or making drive and pitch plays.

Bottom line is that most teams were playing us differently early. We saw a lot of teams that were 'allowing' us to move the ball via the pass. Most opponents were using last years scouting report which was that we were not a great shooting team. When you get into the BIG season it's a different world and that's when league coaches really try to figure out how to take you out of your comfort zone. This league has some coaches, and that is what they did. Once that formula was put on film, other teams copied and the book on how to defend Iowa was well known. Granted we are not shooting it like we were in that run that took us to the top 3 in the country, but it's time for our coaching staff to make the next move. Here's hoping we do vs. Nova today.

We all knew our inside offense was going to take a hit this year without Olaseni and White, so let's not act like all of a sudden this has become a problem for us. Uthoff is not a post up guy and Woody is not an offensive threat outside of rebounding and putting it back up.

Next year we need more guys who can post up or work the lane, and, can create their own shots off the dribble...especially in crunch time.
