Wasn't Mike Tyson at the peak of his career when they locked him up?
Maybe it didn't ruin his career but curtailed it significantly, I'm thinking.

Off the field but not off the turf 😎I often wonder how good Al Bundy could have been had he not knocked Peggy up.
Uncle RicoThere’s a lot of ways you could go with this. My personal pick would be Shawn Oakman. He got falsely accused of rape, and it kept him from being a top 3 round pick in the NFL. Two years ago, it was uncovered that the girl who accused him lied about the whole thing. He lost out on millions and millions of dollars as a result.
No. He died.Would Nile Kinnick have played professional football?
Good one.Would Nile Kinnick have played professional football?
Is WWII an "off the field issue?" I would submit no. I would argue that things like D-Day and Pearl Harbor and the Battle of the Bulge were on the field issues.Good one.
Meh. He was given plenty of chances by the Cubs and MLB. He just was a flash in the pan. Like Jerome Walton or Kris Bryant. He won't qualify as the "best athlete" in this group, but as a Cubs fan, I'll add Addison Russell to the discussion. He was looked at as a potential future MVP, but instead he couldn't stop beating on his wife. He was never the same after those allegations first came out in 2018. The next season, he was dumped by the Cubs at age 25, 3 years removed from an All-Star season, in which he was also clutch in the World Series. He has since dropped off the face of the earth (actually, he's now in the Mexican League, but that's pretty much the same thing). Sad.
Was WW2 fought on the gridirons of the Midwest or the battlefields of Europe? Is WWII an "off the field issue?" I would submit no. I would argue that things like D-Day and Pearl Harbor and the Battle of the Bulge were on the field issues.
I'm okay with your interpretation. Is WWII an "off the field issue?" I would submit no. I would argue that things like D-Day and Pearl Harbor and the Battle of the Bulge were on the field issues.
A few months back an ex-NFL’er (can’t remember who) was being interviewed on The Herd. The discussion was revolving around guys who had “it”/when you could tell they belonged in the league. Without hesitation, this guy said that Aldon Smith was by FAR the most talented player he’d ever seen. And this was a player who was in the league for a long time, and played with/against a bevy of HOF’ers.Alcohol caused Aldon Smith to lose out on a 100MM+ contract and his prime.
And Thurman.Roy Munson deserves a mention, too.
WW2 as an "issue" is an argument I didn't think I'd see today. Was WW2 fought on the gridirons of the Midwest or the battlefields of Europe?
He wasn't even the best TE on his team. Falls into the also ran category. This guy--and it's not even close. But what can we expect from a stinkin' Gator coached by Urban Lier?
It kind of had something to do with his abilities. The pay he was demanding wasn't commensurate with those abilities, to my recollection.A little surprised to not see a Kaepernick mention. Not an all-timer, but he certainly could have/should have had a long career as an nfl starter.
i dont want to get into the kneeling issue here, but he got blacklisted for reasons that had nothing to do with his abilities as a quarterback.

Vick yes, but Winston? Dude threw for 5K yards and 30 TDs before going to the 'Aints. ...albeit a 1:1 TD to INT ratio, but that never stopped Favre. Dude's career isn't tanking due to off the field like Vick's did.Add to the list Michael Vick and Jamies Winston as well.
If you look at his stats his last year with San Francisco they actually aren’t as bad as people might think. Not great, but also not terrible. It kind of had something to do with his abilities. The pay he was demanding wasn't commensurate with those abilities, to my recollection.

and certainly if you look at other quarterbacks who started during that time it’s really hard to argue that it was because of his abilities. His salary is barely an issue, teams weren’t calling him because of the kneeling.
My version of this is Howard Nathan.Drugs: Ricky Williams. Non drug: this young lady who is being labelled as the next serena William's that keeps dropping out of matches due to anxiety. I feel bad for this one.
Iowan: Shane Peterson. If you knew him you know. My BIL was a MLB Player for over a decade. I grew up next door neighbor to Matt Nickell who had a cup of coffee in the MLS. I myself was a collegiate athlete and Shane could do things that none of us could compare to. Left handed, 5-10, and could dunk a full ball, had a swing like Ken Griffey JR, could stop and start better than any athlete I have ever been around and the dude never even played high school varsity because his grades sucked. The Drake program Begged him to finish high school so he could play there and he laughed it off. To this day the biggest waste of talent I have ever seen and he was one of my best friends.
Yes. He wasn't a bad QB, but he wasn't a top 5 QB on anybody's list but his own.If you look at his stats his last year with San Francisco they actually aren’t as bad as people might think. Not great, but also not terrible.

Considering all the other crappy quarterbacks that played while this went on, he absolutely was singled out. He was likely a league average or slightly better quarterback. Every football or money reason provided is false. i forget what contract he was looking for but I guarantee it could have been negotiated down had someone wanted him legitimately.Yes. Edit: The "he isn't playing because he kneeled" argument doesn't hold water. There is a long list of other players who also kneeled that are still collecting paychecks in the league.
Imo it was partly the kneeling but more the distraction he would have caused. Certainly not his fault but any team that signed him would have been unbelievably over run with media. It would have been the biggest circus ever.If you look at his stats his last year with San Francisco they actually aren’t as bad as people might think. Not great, but also not terrible.

I believe Seattle was close to signing him at one point.Considering all the other crappy quarterbacks that played while this went on, he absolutely was singled out. He already turned down pro football for law school. And then left law school for the Navy. We lost a likely political great but not a pro football great.Would Nile Kinnick have played professional football?
