He is a fine athlete but there are hundreds and hundreds of others just as good. He wouldn't get a sniff of the NBA until he develops a shooting touch.
Hundreds and hundreds? Lol

Seriously, just look at the Best PFs that Iowa has had in the last 20 years.
Bowen, extremely good defender and decent offensive game. Role player in the NBA for a decent career.
Evans, double double machine for us. Role player in the NBA for a decent career.
Brunner, extremely gifted player scoring, rebounding, and defense for us with a lot of heart but only 5'10" tall. Not even a sniff in the NBA.
White, decent shooter, high motor, dunk machine for us. Barely got a sniff from the NBA.
What does Cook offer?
1. He's not an elite rebounder currently, and that is hard to teach as it typically comes naturally.
2. He's not an elite defender, which could be taught over time.
3. I've seen his height listed between 6'7" and 6'9". Typically the real answer is in the shorter end of the spectrum.
4. He has very good athleticism. But I'm not sure if he's at Thunder Doug's level of jumping.
5. He has shown some streaky ability to hit outside shots.
6. He's show some really great post moves which are hard to teach.
All of that adds up to a guy that is here for four years unless he develops a portion of his game up to elite level. Consider that only 60 people get drafted every year. Many of whom don't make a roster. Plus a large portion of that 60 are coming in from overseas. Plus there are a lot of great college players that never play in the NBA because of size or one hole in their game. Just for us I can count off Woolridge, Settles, Kingsbury, Recker, Brunner, Haluska, White, Uthoff, and others. Of course some of those guys were hurt by injuries but the point still stands. Around the time that the NBA started pulling in a lot of foreign players is when Iowa stopped routinely putting players on an NBA roster or at least 2nd round draft picks.
Someone mentioned McDermott made it so Cook should be able to. Well, Doug is an elite level shooter and decent enough at everything else.
Having said all of that. The early returns show that him being here for four years will be very good for us.
I agree he was very polished but he lacked what you can't teach athleticism. He gets blown by in the NBA to the point of getting wind burn and being just 220 he lost his power game so no more easy ones or dunks he use to get. His job stand behind the arc and hope he gets a good look cause he can shoot.I thought the same thing. McDermott was the ncaa Player of the Year and an incredibly polished inside/ out player in college.
I thought the NBA liked the whole triple double thingGreat post. The NBA is about specialists, not a guy who has potential to do several things well. We need to let this guy develop and maybe after 3 or 4 years part of his game will be NBA material.
Only speaking about size, since many seem to think he's far too small and a tweener, here are the number of guys that are listed as PF's by height. (this doesn't include players on injured list, just current rosters)
6'7> - 2
6'8 - 18
6'9 - 27
6'10< - 36
There are 47 PFs currently in the league that are 6'9 or shorter, there's even a small handful of C in the league that are 6'9 or less, including the defending NBA Champs C. 6'8-6'9 is not too short for PF in the NBA. Now, does Cook have the talent, ability, projections to get there, I have no idea. Maybe, maybe not. But can we drop the argument that being 6'8 or 6'9 is a rarity for a post? Especially someone who is 6'8 and 250ish. He's plenty big to play PF in the League.
Whether or not an NBA team decides he has the ability or the specialization to project to the next level is certainly a fair argument and is more than worthy of a discussion.
Yes, the NBA is much more positonless than ever. Wes Johnson plays minutes at the 4, so does Tobias Harris, Joe Johnson, Jae Crowder, Matt Barnes, I could go on all day.
With Cook you have to question if his shooting, rebounding, & D is good enough, which can all be improved until he'll top out around 26-28 years old. He is definitely big enough. I expect him to be gone after next year, but hope Iowa gets 3 years out of him.
No. Easy to answer.
Definitely not yet. Sounds like you're writing off the possibility of him improving in any of those categories. Gotta love those kids that top out at 19.
I'm writing off him going pro early. You can tell there aren't a lot of people who watch much NBA on this board.
No disagreements about how people in this place don't watch the Association. Many people on here still think LeBron is a choker and that Derrick Rose deserved the 2011 MVP.
Off topic: but watching playoff LeBron defend point guards in the 4th quarters and just single handedly blow up a team's offense was one of my favorite parts of his run with the Heat. He totally shut down Rose when they threw him on him in the 2011 ECF.
Keneth Faried would be an example of a player with similar size and athleticism.
Except Faried can play defense
Faried in college never stopped moving. He was absolutely crazy at wearing down teams at Morehead state. Cook is missing a lot of polish. He either plays too fast or doesn't get involved in the game. His rebounding isn't nearly on the level it needs to be. His effort during lots of stages of the game isn't there.Keneth Faried would be an example of a player with similar size and athleticism.

Dougie McBuckets was the NCAA player of the year. Cook isn't even the best player for the Hawks so you can start there. If Dougy Mcbuckets can play in the league Cook is gone after 3 seasons

Oh I agree his size isn't the problem at all. He has to be a better rebounder to be in the NBA. End of story. Watching the ball a lot isn't going to do it.Faried in college never stopped moving. I didnt say they were the same player, I said size and athleticism is similar.
You dont have to be 6'10 and its trending the oposite way.
Cooks size will not be what prevents him from being in the leauge.
