Jamaica is a terribly poor country. Went to an all inclusive for a week. Left the resort 3 times, did not feel safe. I don’t think I’ll go back.
Eleuthera or as the locals call it Elootra. Vacationed there for a week. Rented a house and a car. Parts of it were magnificent. But the poverty... no paint on 99% of the roads. Most roads are barely 2 lanes and the speed with which the locals drive coming at you from the other direction is terrifying. Then there were the “grocery stores.” Second world (not going to say they were 3rd world wet markets), expensive as hell (I don’t know how the locals can afford groceries) and the inability to purchase familiar foods. We wanted to grill burgers one night and the best we could find was a box of frozen. I don’t know what the hell was in them but it wasn’t beef and it was gross as hell. One week in Bosnia in the mid 90s when I was a kid. Enough said.

We loved it too mostly. We actually stayed toward the middle of the island by Governor’s Harbour. We made the trek to store in the south and it was the closest thing to what I would call a grocery store. We did hire a chef to come and make us a meal one night and that was incredible. I want to say it was snapper. Overall an adventure. I might do it again but we would freeze and pack our own meat...We love Eleuthera because of how primitive it is but the meat in the (north store) by the airport is not good.. We bring our meat in a carry on cooler and buy the rest of our food there. The store on the south side of the island by Rock Sound has good meat but it's an hour and a half drive from the north airport.
where I think you were. The meat in that north store did not look edible lol.

Varanasi is the most exotic place I ever been. We went to both the evening and morning ceremonies. No other place like it in the world imo.Interesting topic. I'd have to say (no humble brag) out of about 60 countries....I'd go with India. Finally went this time last year and visited Varanasi. One of the most interesting places I've ever been and pretty much spent 4 straight days watching body after body being cremated on the banks of the Ganges River. Very holy place.....but holy crap....was I ready to get back to Bangkok. One visit to India is pretty much all you need.
Oddly enough, I was constipated the whole time I was there and was dining at neighborhood places with the locals. Then, right after checking out of the hotel, got the worst case of the liquid squirts you could possibly imagine from the hotel....to the 30-minute taxi ride to the airport....immigration and security check in....and the entire flight. I think I'm permanently banned from any future Air India flights. Horrible day.
The other eye opener was renting a car. There are like 10 dudes who own a fleet of jalopies. While you arrange it ahead of time they are just there at the airport, which by normal standards looks like a shack. You take it and they come to your house during the week to collect payment. It was a unique experience. We had a sweet 1990s Jeep Cherokee with original struts. I did appreciate it being an American car so I could see to be as far left as possible on the road when a car was coming at us...We love Eleuthera because of how primitive it is but the meat in the (north store) by the airport and Spanish Wells did not look good .. Spent some time in Mostar. What did you not like about Bosnia? One week in Bosnia in the mid 90s when I was a kid. Enough said.
I've got to ask, why would you say this? I can't speak for WSC; but there are some people that just despise traveling. I've been to Canada on a fishing trip and a quick trip to Mexico when visiting my father in south Texas; but I have zero desire to sit on a plane for multiple hours just to see another country.Explains a lot about you.
Small world. We stayed in the same area on Double Bay Beach. If we went back we would definitely go fishing. We stayed in North Polmetto Point twice and loved the area.. It was about a ten minute drive to Governors Harbour where I fished every morning with crank baits off Cupids Cay.. The no see ums there are horrible though..
Seeing how he went in the mid 90s right after the Bosnian War, I could see how it wouldn't be great. Odd choice for a vacation at that time.Spent some time in Mostar. What did you not like about Bosnia?
That does say something about a person. It's not inherently completely bad, but it suggests a bit of ethnocentrism, at best. At worst, a superiority complex...or at least a lack of curiosity. None of those things are good.I've got to ask, why would you say this? I can't speak for WSC; but there are some people that just despise traveling. Oh, I didn’t see when he was there. Yeah, I could see how anyone of the Balkan counties would have sucked back thenSeeing how he went in the mid 90s right after the Bosnian War, I could see how it wouldn't be great. Odd choice for a vacation at that time.

For others in this thread curious what this stuff looks like, this is where we flew in:The other eye opener was renting a car. There are like 10 dudes who own a fleet of jalopies. The only beach we drove to was Ten Bay Beach, and my son and his cousins had fun jumping off the cliffs.I thought it was hilarious the amount of scratches that were on the cars we rented.. Did you go to any beaches besides Double Bay?.. The Lighthouse Beach imo is the best in the Bahamas.
I've been there three times and it's gotten worse each time we've been there. We won't be going back either which is very dissapointing because we loved it there. It says something when you've gotten familiar with the island and you still think it's too sketchy to go back.
It was a nice beach and the house was super sweet. 11 of us from the family stayed in the house so splitting the cost made that possible. What was the real kick to the nuts was airfare for 4. We ALMOST recouped it when they bumped us on the flight home and had to cut us 4 checks for about 1,300 each. That's a nice beach you had.. We looked at vrbo houses on double bay the first time we looked at Eleuthera... Fishing right off of the beach using cut up fish chunks is all I did during the day and I caught a lot of different species of fish.. A 6 foot shark on a heavy duty travel rod was fun lol. Fishing with lures in the morning was productive for the most part also. You can't go wrong with a pole out while being on the beach.
We loved Jamaica but we were at Beaches Negril which is very nice. The day trip to Rick's Cafe was very cool and Chukka’s Good Hope Adventure Park and Falls where we tore through the old plantation on gators was amazing. I also came to love jerk chicken. The poverty on the way to the destinations was eye opening and depressing though.I've been there three times and it's gotten worse each time we've been there. Bummers. Heard the resorts are really nice there,

The island is big enough and a big enough pussy that I would only do a resort in Jamaica. I can't speak for Montego Bay or Runaway Bay as my only contact with Montego was the airport. The towns you drive through on the way to Negril are depressing. But Negril, once you get on the beach with the resorts, WOW. Just be prepared for the guy with the sock hat walking up and down the beach trying to sell you weed every 10 minutes. If I did go back I'd try the Negril area .. The areas we've been too ( between Mo Bay and Runaway Bay) seem sketchy now compared our first trip there. The island is awesome so I'd like to maybe try it one more time in Negril.
