When's the last time a B1G team won by forfeit?

Why do USC and UCLA get the wins? I understand they’re winning those games if played, but it was natural causes that prevented the games being played in California. Why should they get an automatic win for those? Did NW just decide not to go even though it was considered safe?

The games would have been on if Northwestern had decided to fly to California. The Wildcats chose not to go out, so forfeits.

Does it make any difference in the standings... likely not. No contest or forfeit, those 2 teams will be the 1 & 2 seeds. Maybe, possibly a player avoids injury or is less tired in the tournament stretch. NW is the team that it hurts with their chances at making the B1G tournament. Any upset by this has all symptoms of suffering from faux outrage.

Northwestern has now been kicked from the Big 10 tournament because they were given two losses in games that couldn't be played. In the grand scheme of things does it make a difference? Probably not but that's not how those things should be determined.

Yes and I thought they weren’t given a choice at the time to play them. Some here are saying NW chose not to go which is news to me but maybe that’s the case.

So, the Big Ten gave NW the O.K. to forfeit. There were extenuating circumstances in this scenario. The situation the natural disaster created, the costs NW would incur for what would be irrelevance in the final standings since Northwestern will not be involved in the Big Ten tourney.

Factor out the natural disaster aspect and this should not set a precedent. The other conditions, distance, inconvenience and irrelevancy must not be a consideration.

Northwestern announced on Jan. 10 it would not to travel to play UCLA on Jan. 12 and USC on Jan. 15 because of concerns over wildfires in the Los Angeles area. UCLA had offered to play at an off-campus location.

UCLA moved its Jan. 15 game against Penn State to Long Beach State’s arena because of the fires.

USC did not move any home games.

I don't necessarily agree with the forfeits and hadn't put thought into it since Iowa isn't involved. Those games should have been registered as DNPs or rescheduled. Since neither game mattered as far as the standings it's sort of a "so what". That's why I noted precedent.

Not disagreeing with you. It's a chickenshit position for the B10 to take, If NW provided a larger draw the picture may have been different.

I believe the decision was made by the B1G based on the fact that the games could have been played and it was Northwestern who made the decision to not travel.

Too bad all other teams couldn't have divided up their wins and added to their totals. Ha! I was late to the conversation without 1st hand knowledge and conjecturing.

We had a middle school basketball team “cancel” a game because they had too many sick players. They tried to mark it as such but we fought for it be made a forfeit because it was going to cost a game and we were in second place fighting for a bye. Ultimately it was made a forfeit and we got the win on our record.

To me it comes down to did the team choose not to play or not. Even the school team could have played, just had no subs I believe.

You play or take the loss.

I had that happen the other way. We were the sick team. I had 1 starter and 4 bench players. Had to pull the rest from the B team. Only lost by 6...
