It was his/his parents choice, nothing to do with grades.

Some great responses in here. Little side story: I was at Jefferson high school when Mark Ironside and Jeff McGinness had one of their two showdowns in high school. It was packed in that gym. I was pretty young and didn't know much about wrestling yet, but I do recall that the action was intense. They went at each other! I'll bet they were pretty good friends when they became teammates at Iowa.

How has no one mentioned leonard harding? He was an absolute animal in high school.

Bobby Crawford four time state championship in PA. Jason Betz .Only lost once in hight school his senior year .got caught in a spladdle winning 10-2 at the time .you could have heard a pin drop in Hershey just to name a few. If you watch pa wrestling long enough the argument becomes a moot point there are several kids I watched who could have beat anyone they just wrestled at a different time
