Why do poor people attend church where the

Not free.

Christian churches try to shame parishioners into donating by passing the donation bucket from person to person during mass or service.

Oh good grief.
Churches use envelopes and you can seal them. Ever since Covid most churches do not pass an offering plate anymore. The plates are situated at a couple of places where it is east to reach.
Offerings are collected by ushers, put into a safe bag, and then put into a safe.
Later two different people count the offering
and it is recorded. Later it is taken to a bank.

That’s unlike every Catholic mass I’ve attended my entire life. When I was younger it was ushers with baskets attached to long as poles that they put in front of you as they went from front to back. Later the ushers passed a basket to the first person in each row and it was passed “person to person” from front of the church to back.

Still, donations were never required.

If you knew how much going to Mass would help you in life, you'd go daily. :)

Why am I good enough to put money in the basket at a Catholic Church, but I'm not good enough to take communion?

Local Catholic Church begs to differ.

You might as well take communion. Lots of hypocritical Catholics take communion every week that aren’t eligible due to committing mortal sins and not confessing their mortal sin to a priest prior to receiving communion.

Examples of mortal sins according to Catholicism consist of:
  • Idolatry, divination, magic, sorcery, sacrilege, atheism, blasphemy, perjury, failure to attend Mass;
  • Murder, abortion, euthanasia, suicide, scandal, drug abuse, gluttony, alcohol abuse, terrorism, extreme anger, hatred, extortion, adultery, divorce, fornication, pornography, prostitution, rape, homosexual acts, incest, masturbation;
  • Theft, cheating, defrauding a worker of his wages, unfair rages, taking advantage of the poor, false witness, adulation, lying, lust, avarice, envy;
  • Voluntary doubt of faith, heresy, despair in hope, presumption, indifference, ingratitude, lukewarmness, acedia, and hatred of God (Ibid.).
I say all this as I was raised in a Catholic household attending mass weekly. Raised my kids in the Catholic Church attending mass weekly, and sent each of them to Catholic School K-12.

Although I’m Catholic, and they do many good things, I guess I just have some issues with the Catholic Church.

That's ridiculous.

Why would you tell a non-Catholic to get Communion when you're lapsed yourself??

You can't judge who is in mortal sin or not.

I don't get offended when I go to synagogue and can't participate because I'm not Jewish.

I’m not saying they should, just saying how is it different than the millions of Catholics receiving communion each week that aren’t eligible. That’s all. You can’t tell who is and isn’t a Catholic anymore than you can tell who has and hasn’t committed a mortal sin. So why get all worked up about it?

You advised him: "You might as well take Communion."

What you're saying is ridiculous. It's totally different.

Tell your priest you're encouraging non-Catholics to get Communion without converting and let me know how he responds. :(

Rich rule? Seems crazy to me. But most church people are sheep incapable of dealing with the truth. What ya call a person talking to his invisible friend? Crazy. What do ya call a group of people talking to a invisible freind? A church.
Is it really crazier than believing boys can be girls and girls can be boys?

Attending church isn't just about that. For many, it's a place where they find solace, support, and a sense of community, regardless of their financial status. People have their own reasons for being there. I recently found this personal blog about church experiences. If you're interested, you can check it out at https://whenyouneedgod.com/. I'm actually pretty new to this forum, so I'm excited to be part of these discussions.

This should be a good example for the AI thread why we may not have to worry yet
