Why Evelyn over Toussaint

Both Joe T and B.E. have been key pieces for us and will play significant minutes down the stretch. I think most agree that Joe is a better defender and B.E. has played a bit better of late.

These stats are out there which may show how close they are in many ways. These numbers are per game averages for the season.

Joe’s numbers are always listed first.

games. 28. 28.
Minutes. 18. 17.9
Points. 6.5. 3.4
Steals. 1.2. .4
Assists. 2.1. 1.5
Turnovers. 2.0. 1.4
FG percent. 37.3. 33.3
FT percent. 81.4. 84.0
3 PT percent. 28.1. 29.3

I’m of the opinion Fran should let them both see the court and I’ll trust his judgement who he thinks will give us the best chance in each game.

Both have improved as the season has gone on and I’ll root for both Hawkeye’s who have helped us to unexpected results this year.

I think Bakari's strength in close games is that as a grad transfer, he's just more even-keeled no matter how things are going. Joe T is just a bit more inconsistent at times still, though that gets mitigated somewhat if it's a situation where there are frequent stoppages, allowing for more coaching.

fran values mistake free ball in crunch time. I couple anecdotal examples don’t outweigh a trend, unless you think Fran is trying to lose.
Is that suppose to be a joke? Over his tenure, he leads the league in losing close games because of the high level of TOs, careless fouls, defensive mistakes, poor rebounding, ....And much of it has to do with having the most mistake prone guys on the floor at the most critical time.

Every time I am about to throw a shoe into my TV screen due to a turnover or other shortcoming in B. E.'s play, he comes up with a 3 or sinks a couple free throws! He and Joe can both be erratic, but Joe appears to play his best at home games. I would use them on a "home and away" basis.

I thought Fran should have got JT back in today after the 8 minute mark when the team was clearly on tilt offensively. He brought Connor back in and that settled things down but was hoping to see JoeT come in as well to see how he could handle things down the stretch PLUS I think his speed against their press would have been beneficial.

I don't even know why this is a debate. Bakari is showing senior leadership down the stretch and needs the minutes. I love JT, but he's not there yet. We cannot afford careless TOs in crunch time. JT has a promising future.

Did you miss the 2-3 minute stretch around the 8 minute mark where we turned the ball over on numerous occasions and gave life to PenState when the team should have been putting them away?

I only got to watch the last 10 min of the game and remember the 3 turnovers in a row.
Can't remember it Barkari made any of those turnovers though

Yeah, Evelyn played well for the most part (again),but Toussaint getting pulled with around 7 left in the second half and never returning is a little baffling to me. Especially after having 8 assists, 1 TO, and two steals

But a win is a win... everybody contributed

He got pulled with 12 left and never saw the court again, I don't get it.

Both offensive runs where they stretched the lead this game, Bakari was not on the floor. Bakari makes just as many careless turnovers as JT does, I don't understand how people don't see this. Also, the next time he lolligags it and goes under a screen giving up the pick and roll or a wide open 3, I'm going to suplex my TV.

I would like this 500 times if allowed.

Both played well today but Evelyn has the senior mindset and is clutch at the line. Joe T honestly would have had a completely different game if the refs gave him any of those fouls. Dude gets to the rack better than any Hawk I’ve seen in a long time. He could be All B1G material by the time he’s an upperclassman.

Joe T was fouled on two drives. Real obvious, hard to understand how officials "missed" it both times.

Didn’t realize it was 12 minutes... that’s crazy

The only thing I can think of is that Fran is just telling him to ball out for 8-10 minutes at the start of each half and he's just going to close it out with Bakari. Outside of that I just don't get it. JT brings an entirely different energy to the team when he's out on the court, he makes plays that don't show up statistically, the kid is a complete pest on defense. He's constantly tipping balls to other players, dropping down on a double while getting a hand in to disrupt rhythm, he anticipates and gets over the top of screens so our bigs don't have to hedge as hard. I think twice this game he drove to the rim drawing 2 defenders which allowed for easy put backs by our bigs. Those things don't show up on the stat sheet. His intangibles are head and shoulders above Evelyn.

Another thing to consider - Bakari Evelyn is gone after this year, Joe T is our guy for the next 3. A game like today where you're up double digits, why would you not get JT back in there to gain experience closing out a game, especially in this game where no one can say he was playing erratically with a straight face.

Very well put all around - I agree 100%. I guess it’s a good problem to have when we’re second guessing a substitution decision after a nine point win over the #16 team. Really, my biggest concern is that Joe becomes discouraged.

Today, Toussaint played the exact type of game that Fran loves to see from his point guards. Awesome facilitating, great defense, and low turnovers. I thought he was substantially better than Evelyn. If I’m Joe, (unless, as you suggested, this was a pre-discussed plan between he and Fran) I’m wondering what I have to do to get minutes down the stretch

Head scratcher why Joe T wasn't on the court at least half of the last 10 minutes. Probably would have ended up with double digit assists on the day.

What I find encouraging is that Joe hasn't looked disengaged or upset on the bench. Not sure if this was the exact moment, but I *think* after Bakari hit a 3 and Penn State took a timeout, he was up off the bench right away and pumped for his teammates. I think he's a really high character kid just from watching his demeanor during games.

This honestly reminds me a lot of Akrum Wadley's sophomore year. Everyone saw how much more dynamic Akrum was then any other RB on the roster. Sometimes it seems like when coaches see greatness in a player the leash gets a bit shorter for them. I'm hoping in JT's case, like with Akrum, it pays dividends down the road. Joe T's potential at Iowa is sky high.

Who won the game?
If Fran benched Garza or Wieskamp the final 12 minutes of the game, and Iowa won, would you be asking the posters who wanted to discuss what’s up, “Who won the game?”

I’m not likening Toussaint to Garza or Wieskamp, I’m telling you (as somebody who has been a Fran defender for years) that it’s okay to ask questions and critique when Iowa wins. I like to discuss Iowa basketball, and that was one thing that stood out to me today

Don’t be that guy

You mean they guy who always has to have something to bitch about even if we win? And you can’t liken toussaint to Garza or wieskamp and then say that you aren’t. Frans done a hell of a job this year and it seems too many folks just can’t be happy with that. Whatever makes you happy I guess.

It's fair to pontificate on JT's usage at this point in the season. You're not new to the internet/message boards, you understand what this is. Do you just come here to be the white knight of Iowa fandom? I feel like this thread is warranted and an interesting topic.

I didn’t realize that I had a Hawkeye Report reputation of being somebody who is always bitching, even when Iowa wins. If anything, I’d have thought myself more a Hawk apologist

What makes me happy is a) Iowa winning, and b) discussing Iowa sports. Both of which were occurring before you and Clete decided that Iowa basketball discussion isn’t okay on this forum. If I tell you that I think Fran should win Big Ten CotY and that I thought today’s game was awesome, can I go back to wondering why Toussaint didn’t play the last 12 minutes?

Although a reasonable argument can be made for Joe T playing more given the good season the boys are having gotta defer to the coaches.

I'm guessing Joe T gets pretty worked up during the course of the game. Maybe F Mac knows he needs a steady player when protecting a lead. Need the wilder athletic kid when overcoming a deficit.

Interesting to see who is on floor next season in the last 10 minutes. Jordan's a 90% FT shooter and has iced many games so it's hard to have him off the floor in crunch time.

JT had a a productive 15 munutes. He had 8 assists and a couple steals. He was a disrupter. Joe is getting it. Wouldn't be shocked if he led The BIG in assists his junior or senior year/

Spot on! We know there'll be at least one kid on the team that knows what do when gets those passes. See CJ and Joe T as a dominant back court for about 2 and half seasons.
