It seems to me now is as good a time as any for the R to reinvent itself. I thought they would after 2 losses to Obama and the train wreck that the tea party has been, but they doubled down and now Trump is doing it for them, and they appear to have lost control.

As voters, we're stuck, we really are. On average, the population is getting more progressive, so it makes sense that both parties slide that way I think. Perhaps a party that both taxed fairly across all income brackets AND stood for efficient limited government could succeed. Right now our choice is standing for big wasteful spending (which neither I or any of my Lib friends stand for) or cater to corporations and the ultra rich (which none of my con friends are).

If the R cut the bigotry, military complex, and religious extremism, stood for limited govt, responsible budgeting, CARED about Americans and backed fundamental safety nets WITH a focus on efficiency and fraud prevention, took pride in actually providing opportunity for ALL Americans, I'm an R tomorrow. They would keep most of their southern base... where are they gonna go? They maintain the brand recognition there and would pick up a lot more from the middle and independants than they lose. Basically the party has to fuel the type of revolution that people who follow Trump and Bern are clamoring for. Honest talk about how the current system is failing and they admit they have been part of the problem for too long. Driven by a party, it could actually make more sense and be possible to execute, being a much more centrist target. Talk openly about compromise and America's rich heritage of being a melting pot but working together... that goes back all the way to our founding fathers. Talk about building the greatest companies and wealth in the world, which is not evil, but by definition must include fair treatment of the workers whose backs they are built on. And then follow thru on those principles.

I swear to Christ if anyone came out strong on collaboration and inclusion, actually walked the walk on keeping govt out of private lives/decisions, with a conservative financial philosophy of responsibility, accountability and creating opportunity... they would succeed.

I think if the R made a giant leap to the center and brought common sense to the under-served centrists, they would have a future and might even dominate. There is too much pandering to the edges, one of the parties has to claim the logic and compromise of the center.

Am I crazy?

Already been said many times on here. And no, you're not crazy. I've always said if they could distance themselves from the religious right (kick their ass to the curb), they may take a hit early on, but they would gain independents and current Dems in the long run.

Question: if a person is against open borders and wants immigration laws enforced, is he or she a bigot?

Not necessarily. If enforcing immigration laws means rounding up everyone here illegally and deporting them, then one might or might not be a bigot, but they are certainly an idiot. I'm not saying that's your definition, perhaps you mean securing our borders and deporting those caught crossing, plus deporting those found as a result of committing a crime, etc.. to which I agree. Stopping the bleeding is a separate issue in my mind from what to do with our current population of illegal immigrants.

That's ridiculous. Bigot? Hell no. Idiot? More like naive.

I said they might or might not be a bigot... as in... it's not able to determine.

Someone who thinks we should round up and deport all illegals... naive is incredibly generous. Believing it's realistic, affordable, even possible? I feel pretty good standing behind idiot.

The Republican party is experiencing more election success at all levels of government than at any time in modern history. The OP is watching too much MSNBC.

No doubt. ;)

I totally agree, and think the first party to move toward the center is going to win the day for the next 10-15 years. I believe there are plenty of D's who are voting based on social issues now but don't really appreciate the fiscal liberalism that comes with it. Meanwhile, there are plenty of R's who are voting on fiscal conservatism, but are all for inclusion, renewable energy, etc. and a little more progressive socially.

Obviously the leadership in the Republican party didn't plan for it to be them, or NOW that it would change, but that certainly seems to be what's beginning to happen, and it's ugly now, but may work out great for moderates in the next 4-6 years. A growing % of people on both sides are tired of being made out as "evil" if they simply disagree, and that entire segment is ripe for the picking.

Nope, you're an American. It does depend a little on why you want laws enforced...Like, if you want to close the borders because you're worried you'll have a mixed race grandkid, then yes, you're a bigot:).
