Why was Cade in there so long?

Because Deacon was so good... can't replace him! Talking about sitting cade in a blow out, and giving back-up reps, that's all. I'm still betting Cade won't last the year.
Petras too.

Each new team has to find its identity a learn how to win together.

Especially with the new system, I have no problem with Cade's playing time

Cade needed game reps healthy, sure. But he had those, and the game was over. Sully needs game reps, too. He WILL be needed this season and needs to be ready. No other staff in the country is so willfully neglectful of their QBs.

KF has hardly ever, in his career, taken the starting QB out. for any reason barring injury. hardly ever. there are some exceptions. since it was not KF there, I thought there might be a chance. silly me.

I have no problem with Cade playing essentially the entire game. Giving Sullivan some more garbage time when the game was already won is not what he needs. What I would have liked to see was BS coming in for a few meaningful snaps here and there during the game. That would have kept him more game-ready than playing with the 2nd & 3rd stringers at the end of a blowout.

One year, Vandenberg was in the entire game that PSU was blowing Iowa out at Iowa. Captain Kirk just keep marching him out there down by about 40 points. He didn't see any need to give the #2 guy some experience. Horrible with QBs his en,tire career.

To me, doing that wouldn’t have been helpful at all in the second half, once the offense got rolling.

I’ve never really liked playing two quarterbacks outside of truly rare circumstances, such as Banks in ‘01.

They need a good QB1. Cade had one bad half and one good half. He needed the reps. With that said, putting in Sullivan for a series at the very end would have likely done more to prepare Sullivan than detract from Cade's progress. You have very few chances to to get QB2 live reps and this was one of them. It's almost like they are afraid of creating any potential QB controversy should QB2 shine.

Yeah that was bad. Like negligent of his job duties bad. He has had some weak spots and QB development is one of them. The backup QB at the time was Jake Rudock who certainly could have used the reps then or any other time during a 4-8 season. Nope Vandenberg was the only FBS QB to take all of his teams snaps that season... we went 4-8. Ferentz gave the fans the finger that night.

Especially since Vandenberg was a senior. There were a couple of chances that year to give a backup some reps. One of the few major fails in Kirk’s career.

The only relevant question here is what would Brian have done?

Leave him in? Obviously so that seems like a questionable move. Brian found ways to not score points that an average person off the street might not have avoided.

We have a QB1 that has played a total of 4 full football games in 2 years. He wasn't able to practice in the spring. We have a new OC with an entirely new playbook and verbiage. And some of you want to LIMIT his game reps? Injury isn't a reason, this is football....shit happens. The benefit of getting him all the game reps we can far outweighs any risk of injury in my mind.

Disagree. Once the Hawks were up 33-0 early in the 4th, Sullivan should have been put in.

Yesterday was the PERFECT chance to get him reps.
What in the history of the United States of Kirk Ferentz would make you think that would ever happen?

Just kidding, I think it would've been great to see Sullivan do something more than hand it off, but sadly I don't think we'll ever see that barring an injury.

Which one of the two future NFL QBs that KF had on the bench in 2012 do you think he should have played instead of college football's worst QB that season?

Different year, same people bitching about KF’s QB rotations.

As others have said ... I completely disagree. We're talking about a guy who has had a ton of rust to shake off. Furthermore, he's trying to execute a new offense too. In this sort of situation ... you want all the reps you can get. The more film you get on yourself, the more self-scouting you can do and the more you can learn!
I'm sure this subject will be revisited if things go sideways late in a game that's already in hand.

Almost never a good argument. A lot can happen between the present and the future. That's why most freshmen and true freshman don't play.

The expertise and daily insight that goes into a coach's decision making - almost always a good argument.

Longest tenured coach in college football - also a decent argument

No matter how you want to spin it, there is absolutely no way to defend KF's decision to play MVB for every single snap during the excruciating 2012 season.

As beat up as the o line was by then end of the year, while I’d have at least given a series or two to rudock, idk that it was the worst thing either.

Aside from the reps, I’m not sure they had a ton to gain by tossing them out there.
