Why Weird Al Avoids Politics

He’s absolutely correct on his first point. But I’m not so sure about his second point, for a couple of reasons.

Political humor can be timeless if done well. One of my all-time favorite SNL sketches was Bill Murray as Walter Cronkite and Dan Aykroyd as Jimmy Carter doing a radio call-in program. Carter talking a guy down from a bad acid trip was sheer genius.

He also mentions that a political song probably wouldn’t be something you’d want to play on stage 5 or 10 years later. Even if that’s the case with a particular song, his catalog is so vast that he couldn’t possibly play all of his songs in a single show even if he wanted to.
