Will Indiana Go After Alford?

will, yes

get, no (unless UCLA bows out in their first game, then all bets are off)

I think it's a valid question.

Was also wondering. Obviously he's not liked around here but sounds like most Hoosier fans still love him. His son is a senior and think lose 1-2 other seniors along with lonzo bell and most likely tj leaf. Be very curious to see who Indiana targets.

However one name I'm sure won't be in the running is bob knight especially after what he said about administration at Indiana from his days there (basically said he hopes they are all dead now).

It's a big deal because our team faces IU twice a year. Plus, our former coach is a IU legend. Don't you think that could play a role on recruiting and our matchups.

Fans have finally started returning to Pauley. The calls for him to resign are gradually disappearing. He has a great recruiting class coming in. He would be a fool to return to Bloomington.

That's all Lonzo Ball, not Alford. Ball's brothers aren't going to be near as successful in college, Steve's good at getting out ahead of the posse.

Suicide. He has the Balls rolling in among others.

Indiana basketball is Nebraska football.

The glory days were in the past. Alford isn't a good enough coach to win via coaching. He needs superior talent. I think he can get that easier in LA.

Not sure about not good enough coaching. Everyone thought it was all Craig Neal at New Mexico, and Neal has not replicated what SA did in NM. I think SA is recruiting for UCLA better than Howland did, and I am sure he could recruit Indiana better than Crean. So for Iowa, it is better if he stays at UCLA.

IU has fallen off since the 90s but not nearly as much as Nebraska football.

A good coach could get IU back to blue blood status. Crean was able to get elite talent, hes just an awful coach.

Even Nick Saban couldn't get Nebraska anywhere near where they were in the 90s.

Don't forget "arrogance". Steve Alford has a truckload of arrogance, and if Indiana comes calling I doubt he could resist. He should, but he won't.

My money is on Greg Marshall.
Chances are he has had some professional maturity like anybody in any profession. The Steve Alford today is probably a much different Steve Alford than the one who coached at Iowa.

Steve Alford should never be mentioned as a possible replacement for anyone, anywhere without the full Pierre Pierce story being told. Guy is human scum with no soul. Tried to hide behind Jesus to browbeat a victim into not pressing charges.

Then his buddy Pierre did it again 2.5 years later.

Not to mention the way he ignored what Pierce tried to do to Pat Harty's daughter and proceeded to smear Pat as "anti Iowa."

Vermin. Scum of the earth.

Who's Pat Harry?

And pics of daughter?

Bobby Knight is 76 years old, I doubt he needs the trauma. I thought Alford wanted the Indiana job after he left Iowa and Indiana wasn't interested. Of course things change. Imagine Alford makes much more money at UCLA and his son wouldn't want to take a red shirt if he has one and play one year for Indiana.

I'm sure there was a time when SA wanted to be the coach at Indy. But I think that time has passed now and he is content with the job he has. Besides, I doubt he would be well received at Indy.

Bryce is a senior this year with no eligibility left. Korry already graduated and works on SA's staff. Pretty sure their daughter is out of school too.

If I recall correctly, and I could be remembering wrong, didn't Alford suggest that PP move along after the first incident and offer to help find him a place to transfer to? The U of I stepped in and said to give him a second chance after a red shirt year.

I'm sure your recollection will be spot since you seem to have the inside scoop here. But let me correct you on one thing, it was Pat Harty's niece, not his daughter.

Alford was squeaking clean before PP and has been since. I can't remember any recruiting violations or other criminal incidents involving Alford. I'm not trying to down play what PP did in the least, they are very serious charges. But to act like Alford aided and abetted PP is just as serious. I don't know the whole story and I'm fairly certain you (or anyone) don't either.

I've never met Alford, but his family went out of their way to make my family's day a little better many years ago, on a game day too. I was told Steve was nice and Tanya was exceptional during their interaction. I've also heard that players really liked playing for Alford.

There have been various ***SOURCES*** who say there is a lot of mutual interest. I've read quite a few articles on twitter and heard rumblings from Bilas, SVP, etc. Who knows what is actually going on behind the scenes but the fact he won't deny it at the beginning of the NCAA tourney says a lot to me. He just constantly deflects while in the meantime speculation is running rabid. I would personally put about an 80% chance he's coaching in Assembly Hall next year.

I don't see why Alford would stay at UCLA really. Rightfully or not, the UCLA fanbase expects championships. Howland went from three straight final fours to on the hot seat in three years. Alford's job was on shaky ground prior to this year and their drastic offensive improvement is due to having a once in a generation point guard this year. They lose a ton off of their team this year, his son, Ball, Leaf, Hamilton all will be moving on. Plus he has the headache of Lavar Ball to deal with for the next few years, a guy who makes it clear he recruited UCLA, not the other way around. Lonzo was worth the headache, but I think the younger two brothers are overrated and won't be nearly the impact type player. Seems like a great time to come home for Alford.

From an SI article on the subject of Indiana's next coach, guess the author isn't a fan of Hoiberg:

The Mayor won big at his alma mater, Iowa State. But if Indiana officials looked under the hood of his recruiting—a conga line of troubled transfers with discipline issues—they’d get a little queasy. No coach in recent basketball history succeeded with a riskier recruiting gameplan. It’s not a tenable model.

Plus, Hoiberg is better off getting fired by the Bulls and taking the big paycheck that comes with it. He’s also been a dismal NBA coach, which wouldn’t help here.

Some of Alford's recruiting near the end of his Iowa tenure was starting to smell a little funny. The most obvious example was the case of Malik Perry, who had attended a very dubious prep school before committing to Iowa. (He never made it to campus.)

The decision to keep PP around and let him redshirt was not the university's recommendation alone. It was a "solution" that was arrived at by a number of parties. It was the wrong choice, obviously. Iowa should have done the right thing and asked him to move along. Alford was the coach of the Iowa team, and he can determine who gets a scholarship and who doesn't. If he wanted PP to have moved on, PP would not have been on the team.

What got Steve in trouble during the Pierce fiasco was his adamant defense of Pierce right after it happened, claiming he was innocent before the legal process had played out. When Pierce pled guilty to reduced charges, it made him look silly. Also what got him in trouble was allowing Athletes in Action to arrange a prayer meeting between Pierce and the victim. Poor, poor judgement.

Like any person, Alford was not the 100% villian nor the 100% saint he is portrayed as by the defenders and detractors. You aren't the only one to have had positive interactions with him. But the Pierce saga came to define his time at Iowa, and on that one he made a big mistake.

I think you are wrong about Alford asking PP to move on. Just the opposite.

I wouldn't assume Alford has been clean as a recruiter. The whole Tyler Smith deal always smelled rank to me. Smith left Iowa when Alford left with Neal.

Either way if Alford will get a FAT contract this year. A final four run this year and he writes his own check.
