You know Izzo was working the officials in advance of this game....statements he has made. He is desperate to get his team off of their losing skid.

So, with the Mich/Wis brawl is the league going to tell officials to really keep a lid on things? Will the officials themselves understand that? Or is it no factor at all?

I’m hoping it blows up in Izzo’s face…..and his comments regarding officiating results in having MSU actually start getting called for all the fouls they commit.

In a perfect world, Izzo's comments would piss off all the B1G refs and MSU will be swimming in foul trouble, early and often, tomorrow night.

But, would not be at all surprised to see it go the exact opposite way and will watch the refs kowtow to the angry little elf and Iowa will be the team in foul trouble, early and often.

I had this thought, too, OP. Then quickly followed it with a reminder to self: Don’t get your hopes up.

I was already expecting the officials to be catering to Izzo and expect nothing has changed. They will call fouls against MSU in the 1st half that will be overlooked in the 2nd. #samestorydifferentday

Extra close policing of on-court deadball flair-ups and confrontations between players, maybe an early T to send a message, but the refs will default to normal otherwise.

B1G officiating blows. It has for quite a while and despite this being a high profile incident I don't expect it to have a lot of impact on this particular game.
It's going to take a complete change in officiating, namely hiring professionals and following something like the NBA officiating structure, to make the necessary positive impact.
I don't think the B1G crews have been holding some quality in reserve that we haven't seen yet but can somehow now bring forward. They just aren't that good.

Along a related line of thought we now have another post game event that escalated in the handshake line. I've been OK for quite some time now if that whole exercise would just go away. Is this incident going to push that at all?

Sadly, this is what I expect. It wouldn't be the first time Iowa has gotten raked by the refs in a game vs MSU. But we'll see. I'd be happy with a fairly officiated game. Is that too much to ask?

Izzo is a crybaby. I remember his team losing to us at halftime a few years ago in a game on ESPN, and when the reporter talked to him coming off the court, all he could do is bitch about the officiating. Nothing changes.

I remember a home game circa 2014 that was really bad and then we all remember the B10 Tournament game around the same year, it was as bad as the 05 outback bowl..

Here's the reg season game from 2014...this is a travel in the NBA, youth ball, etc, wow... Carver was indeed rocking this day!

Here's the 2013 Big Ten Tourney game, there are no words IMO...get ready for tomorrow night it could be the same even on home floor!

If MSU tries to come out and play bully ball, the officials will tolerate a little less than usual. As in all games, Keegan needs to not get in early foul trouble, which will be in Izzo's game plan. This is not the past MSU teams that were able to maul you on the boards, but it will be critical that the Hawks stay with them on the boards.

If I were commissioner I would call every AD and head coach in for a meeting. Not a teleconference, an ass in the seat meeting. We would have a come to jesus meeting about sideline decorum, acting like a coach, and being a role model.
I would also call in the refs to discuss consistency. I would also start giving them weekly video quizzes from plays in the conference. Potentially pay them on their game grades.

The mccabe headlock was on mccabe and just one of the many reasons/examplts I hated him in an iowa jersey.

Obviously it's anybody's guess at this point....but I believe that the extra attention will have some influence on the officials keeping things under control. I think it mitigates Izzo's whining to some degree. We may not be able to tell how much....but I think it will. IF we see a significant emphasis on calling fouls early and often then I think it;s a message sent....I think Fran can use the current atmosphere to his advantage.

A) The guy doesn't have the balls. B) He works for the conference AD's and presidents, so he's not laying down the law to his own bosses. Ain't happening.....

Yes. They will take it out on Fran.

Let’s hope the ref who called a foul on the last second shot from Harper, isn’t assigned to tomorrow’s game. IIRC, his name is Green.

That guy has swallowed his whistle in the past when Iowa is playing MSU. If there is one game a year that I worry about the refs totally screwing over Iowa, it’s the MSU game.

We were absolutely raped by the refs in that MSU game and it cost us a tournament bid. Still burns me as bad as any Hawk loss ever.

Yep, I will never, ever forget that game. Between that and the '05 Outback Bowl vs. FL really makes you wonder if they were that inept or something else was going on. They single handedly willed MSU back in that game, there was zero consistency and stole a tourney bid from Iowa.

I remember this game every time we play Sparty in bball and they should show this to the team before tip, looking for some energy and a big Win tonight!

It won't affect Izzo to any degree. He will bitch and cry on every foul against the spartans and plenty more just for the hell of it. I remember him bitching from start to finish on a game where he had a 25 point lead. Bitches be bitches.
The FIRST time Izzo starts his cry baby act tonight, he should be T'd up. THAT's the message the refs should send, along with calling fouls on MSU for just looking like they want to touch an Iowa player. Both messages should have been sent about 20 years ago. Instead, they've let the little bully from East Lansing do and say whatever he wants while his teams play rugby on the basketball court. All that should end tonight in Iowa City. Hey, we can dream . . .

BTW: My blood pressure is rising right now, so I hope CMac and Joe T can get the message across that Iowa needs to come out with their hair on fire and play with as much intensity and energy and focus as they ever have. Tonight is the night to jump out to a commanding lead early and keep it going for 40 minutes. If the Hawkeyes are as fired up as I am, they'll be just fine.

Depends on who the refs are tonight. I expect both coaches will be a little more subdued tonight as far as going after referees. I think the refs will be a little less tolerant of trash talking and players bumping and pushing each other on dead balls. Otherwise I doubt we will see many changes. If any player or coach is out of line though I think there will be a quick foul called.

No, Izzo will get the calls irregardless.

I doubt it will have any impact on calls. ts been dealt with, at least as far as its going to be. The only real issues, (other then the same old shit Davison does every game) were after the game.

Hilariously hypocritical for the man who invented the "they won't call a foul on every possession" defensive philosophy to be complaining about officiating. If the refs call things much closer than usual, does he really think that'll hurt the most disinterested defensive team in the league while simultaneously helping the Big Ten's unquestioned kings of mugging? Or maybe he just wants to be able to someday tell his grandchildren that he was there the night Iowa scored 60 points from the free throw line.

There were some bad calls…. But I thought it was better than it has been, particularly against MSU and Izzo.
Iowa played through the rough handling both at OH State and at home today. I hope they continue to do so. This is part of what they've been lacking.

I was a little nervous when the second half started, they were bodying us hard the first couple possessions and they scored both times on the other end. They toughened up and battled through it. First time this year I didn’t think much about the officiating
