Will you view the current players collecting big NIL the same as players of yesteryear?

You don’t think players at Iowa have been getting extra benefits throughout the years? News flash, they have.

To answer your question specifically, there are plenty of basket weaving degrees at Iowa. You just have to be smart enough to get in the door, which quite frankly isn’t that hard. Most universities are getting rid of ACT/SAT scores and class rankings for admissions. It’s turning into a joke.

Sure they have. but some.guys are pulling six figures now no doubt.

Or do you see them as different things?

I see players now as minor leaguers, not students.

No one has been held out for academics in years.
Depends on what you’re talking about. As players I see no difference. Athletes and academics have always been what they make of it. Some are here for just football, some are here for both. Even if you see them as minor leaguers what difference does it make with their performance?

It doesn't. Some of these guys are dumber than a box of rocks though and have no business in classes

Only difference now is the money grab is out in the open. Ya think Joe Namath was gettin benefits at bama?

But they make a lot of money for the school.
But they make a lot of money for the Athletic Department

FIFY

Good correction. And the Athletic Dept spends most, if not all of it.

But does Proctor make money for the program? Would Bama's revenue have changed if he went to Iowa last year? Would Iowa's? Iowa would have still had the same record with him in the lineup,

Caitlin Clark makes money for the program. Top QB's do. But most of the players are cogs in a wheel - you need all the cogs working together to win games. If a really good player is missing, then there is a pretty good player behind him.

The University general finances get no benefit from any sports.

Yeah I know. That's why I liked your correction.

It also bugs me when they talk about the programs making "billions". Revenue is in the billions, but they spend it - the amount they "make" (i.e. profit) is a fraction of the revenue.

You didn’t need to fix it for me. The players make a lot of money for the school. If the team succeeds, the school makes more money, not just the athletic department.

Look at Colorado. Admissions jumped big-time this year, which means kids from all over the country are applying even more than usual. Now they admit more out-of-state students who pay more because of out-of-state tuition and so on. And those extra 10,000 (round number) applications coming in at $75/application…that isn’t going to the athletic department. It isn’t just helping the athletic department.

If the thing you liked most about college football was the exploitation of labor then I think we are coming at sports from a very different direction

If he makes the team better then yes he is making money for the program. There is a reason NFL teams pay left tackles a lot of money and it's not because they're selling jerseys. And even if he doesn't, he is expending significant time and energy and putting himself at significant physical risk in service of something that makes hundreds of millions of dollars for the school

Well, it doesn't make any money for the school. I wish some of it did. It all goes to the athletic department which turns around a spends it on things that make the program better - which is a benefit the players.

My point, as it always has been, "college" athletes were very well compensated before NIL IMO. That is if they value the education.

I've always supported a stipend for ALL athletes. I am not in favor of guys making 6 or 7 figures.

But that ship has sailed .....

The school as a whole doesn't benefit

The school is going to have an athletic department no matter what, the department being successful enough that it is able to fund itself is absolutely a value to the school as a whole, particularly when athletics plays a big role in student life and the sales pitch to prospective students.

It didn't in my life at Iowa. A big role? No

Weird to go through the time to read and join a forum about a thing you didn't really care about.

And that's fine if it wasn't part of yours, that doesn't mean your experience is universal. Football especially is a giant event for a big chunk of the student body and there is a reason they put the sports teams all over their ads.

If you are disgusted by the money in college athletics and horrified that the people doing the work in it might get a share Iowa has many fine division three institutions who I am sure would welcome you as a fan.

I would rather see the UI drop football.

As for the student body. They are caring less and less. Was their section full for even one game last Fall?

Again, there is a residual effect in which the school makes money from the sports programs, not every penny of a sporting event goes back into the athletic department.

The University of Iowa gets millions of dollars worth of free advertising thanks to the Athletic Department.

It's also been proven that Universities see a bump in applications and enrollment after one of their teams has a great season. The idea that the Athletic Department doesn't make money for the University is silly.

Ok. They don't get any direct payments.

Watch the movie every year. I've quoted this character on this site. Interested to why and how he picked it too
