Winning vs entertainment?

Wrestling seems to be a sport where coaches want to rest guys during the season, duck top guys to avoid hurting their seed, and too many people stalling just to keep matches close.

So as a fan what is most important to you? Do you want iowa to win at the end of the year even if that means boring wrestling and top guys missing big matches? Or do you just want to be entertained? Obviously if the talent is not close then matches tend not to be very entertaining either.

Not a way to grow the sport by protecting seeds.

Freestyle was almost removed from the Olympics because its entertainment value approached zero due to rules.

I think an overwhelming majority demands both. Gun-to-head “pick one” situation, I imagine most say “win”, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be as enthusiastic or supportive.

Where's the option for winning is more important than being entertained, but maintaining integrity is the most important?

Obviously everybody loves a great match like Siebrechts for example. But I’ve said it before if an Iowa guy went undefeated to a title and won every match during the year 3-2 nobody is complaining that we had an undefeated ncaa champ. So ultimately winning matters most.

Agreed that winning is first and foremost. But bonus is a biggy too in a dual or tournament setting, it CAN make all the difference.

So that is part of the entertainment portion of the equation, even though a hard fought 3-2 win CAN be entertaining as hell.

Tom Brands is the Head Coach at Iowa because the winning AND entertainment was lacking. It got boring and stale and the results and subsequent attendance drop reflected that, and cost a great Hawkeye in Jimmy Zalesky, his job.
