I know this is a popular topic.

I sure noticed in the PTL videos I watched that Woody was attacking the rim much more agressively. He had some nice dunks and looks like he is trying to get away from his below the rim finesse game he had when he came to Iowa.

Mostly the playing below the rim was due to short arms/wingspan and not much vertical. Which was surprising for how well he can move his feet for his size.

Nice to see he has obviously been working on this part of his game. He has progressed each year and would be nice to see a big jump (pun intended) for him this year.

well, he is growing, maturing and getting stronger, so it only stands to reason that his physical skill would improve. just wait until he's 25 or 26, he'll be able to dunk jumping off of BOTH feet! ;)

we love ya woody!

He desperately needs added strength which would help his jumping. Hopefully he has been working hard in the weight room.

Woody was attacking the rim vs subpar defense and again guys that are smaller/shorter than what he'll face in the Big 10. That's not to say Woody isn't a serviceable big guy because he most definitely is, but he'll never be someone Coach Fran will be counting on to score many points.

Woodbury is as strong as an ox. What he needs is more explosive power - that would make the biggest difference IMO. I would be very surprised if the Iowa athletic trainers don't have him focused on a power training regimen primarily.

I'll believe it when I see it in the B1G.

If he continues to give serviceable offensive play and improves on D(especially staying out of foul trouble) that would be a net positive for the team.

I don't know what to say other than this - you're wrong.
Woody isn't weak, but he is not as strong as an ox. He and Gabe looked like boys playing against men in the final game against the Zags' centers. All I want from Woody is good position defense, stay on the court at least 25 min/game, grab at least 7 or 8 boards, and make decisive moves to the rim when he gets the ball near the basket. If Iowa is going to have a successful season, Woody needs to step up and achieve these goals.

When Woodbury had the put-back dunk in the tournament last season, I was convinced that was his follow-up to the "shoosh" he gave us all!

I agree Woody needs specialized training to improve his explosiveness, but not sure how much he can improve given he is starting with maybe a 14 inch vertical and his arms are not going to get any longer.

Is dunking a priority to being a good big man? I'm more concerned with him developing a game to the free throw line and elbows and have a small hook shot rather than dunking because that will open up driving lanes a lot more for everyone else.

It's not a priority but it would certainly set a different tone.

I really don't care if he dunks more or not, but he does need to improve on finishing at the rim, be it with the dunk or not. But in reality Adam is what he is, and he'll continue to set bonecrushing screens to free up others as that's his role and he's good with that, I just think that if he was a stronger finisher defenses would have to contend with him more.

The one thing I guess I'd say is if Woody is dunking more it will mean our floor spacing has pulled defenders out further and Woody is getting an opportunity to take that one step drive to the basket. And I would love to see him put one down on Diamond Stone, Swannigan, Haas, etc., etc. Woody has been doing the unheralded dirty work (no eye poke comments...that's not what I mean) for three years. The more times he gets a little moment to shine, the better.

No, it's not nearly the best part of his game...but dang he's got some paybacks coming.

I'd rather he keep developing his jumper. He'll never be Doug Thomas.

Dunking is aggression. Aggression @ 7 foot should result in dunking. Dunking is the surest way to finish. Dunking is cool.

Woody is gonna be an absolute stud this coming year. Of course, i said that same thing last year.

I do know this, he isn't gonna be playing much during the 1st halves. It will be survive inside and use his fouls in the 2nd half.

Woody is what he is. A semi-mobile big with extremely limited offensive skills. He was highly rated coming out of high school based upon "potential". He hasn't developed at all IMO. He looks exactly like he did in high school. He is big, moderately strong and a fairly intelligent basketball player. He is simply too slow to be much more than a five and five guy in about 20 minutes a game.

ISU fan is what an ISU fan is. A semi-troglodyte thumb sucker with extremely limited evaluation skills. He fails to recognize that Woody was recruited for what he was, an outstanding defensive big with guts and heart. He's developed more in his years at Iowa than the average ISU fan develops in a lifetime. Calling Woody moderately strong and fairly intelligent is a joke. But, ISU fans are too slow to be much more than a pain in the rear little brother. And that's on a good day.

He is a good passer and an intelligent basketball player, but he is limited in his quickness and offensive ability. He doesn't block a lot of shots, has a tendency to foul out and his inability to finish at the rim is near legendary for a seven footer. There is no doubt about his guts and heart, he just isn't that good of a basketball player and he certainly hasn't lived up to his hype coming out of high school.

Just can't quite get those blinders off huh?

Woody dunking is relatively low on my list of concerns for the team. Or, even him individually as a player.
Stay out of foul trouble. Good defense. Smart post passing. Rebounding on both ends.
He needs to finish post moves strong at the bucket. As long as he isn't missing those short ones, I don't really care that much whether or not they're dunks.
