Woody playing Elite level Defense

I have always loved Woody and his game, even when he was getting hammered.

Why? Because I have always known what he brings to the team, which is WAY more that just an average fan has seen.

Passing, setting up breaks, defense, SCREENS, he has always done A TON to make the team run smoothly, not all of it always seen on the surface.

He is a smart and talented big man that goes WAY beyond just points and rebounds. He has been IMMENSELY important to this team over the past 4 seasons.

He will be missed, bigtime.

Iowa will miss all of this years seniors next year. They'll have Jok returning and might be a little more athletic, but this year's experience is huge, and Uthoff is one of the best players to ever don a Hawkeye uniform. Amazing talent.

I do think next year's team could be fun to watch but will likely be much less consistent, again, a byproduct of youth.

Not to mention his hedging on ball screens at the top of the key.

What's easy to forget when watching all of Woody's hustle, and terrific defensive effort, is the amount of energy it takes to carry a 7'1" frame up and down the court for an entire game - especially now that he gets so many minutes. Seeing him with great energy late in games is a testament to his work ethic.

We are definitely going to miss Adam next year, especially when we face teams like Purdue with huge inside guys that bang.

Agree on lots of positives on Woodie...best year by far.

That said, when facing the big teams next year...Iowa will attempt to counter that with numbers of mobile, slightly smaller but quicker lineups. Wear down their bigs in the first half...stay close...they will capitulate if the throttle is kept down...

This is very, very true and his defense/leadership is outstanding in the post!

I think the nba will take a sniff, but that's it. Who knows. He needs to improve and extend the range on his jumper if he's gonna stick.

Also shooting 81.6% from the line.

We will miss him very much next year.

Major props to #34

He is playing his best basketball by far this year. I feel so good for him and Iowa would not be the team it is without him. And....he CAN dunk!

This thread is sure a LOT different than what was being written about Woody in past years and even earlier this year. Wish I had a better memory about who has said what, and whether the people who were hammering him are now quiet or just talking out of the other side of their mouth. Woody's free throw shooting and ability to defend without fouling has improved dramatically, but he was playing really good post defense, hustling his butt off, and being a vocal leader on the court before.

I've always loved Woodbury.

Think about the immediate impact he had as a freshman. The year before, the Zeller kid from Indiana had about 30 highlights dunks and moves around the basket. The next year, Adam solidified Iowa's paint presence. He is so good against elite level centers.

Also, he could have just left out improving his free throw game. Instead, his FT% is what??? 80%+

I freely admit that I've hammered Woody in the past for missing bunnies, not being able to leap over a dime and getting his shot blocked by sub 6 footers. But there is so much more to his game than you'd notice at first glance, which you guys have covered here. I'd also like to say that the Ad Daddy has been an outstanding Hawkeye and made us proud both on and off the court. He's withstood tons of criticism and never let it get him down or affect his play. He gives 100% at all times, diving for loose balls like no 7 footer that I've ever seen and had went toe to toe w/ future NBA draft picks his whole career. I still remember him silencing the crowd after a long overdue dunk. He's handled all the criticism w/ class and has represented the university well. He's shaping up to have a great senior season and to be one of my all time fave Hawks. God bless this young man.

Amen. I am not about to call out other hawkeye fans cause it just doesn't matter. Woody has busted his butt for this program and has done very well for Iowa. Love this guy.

"I pity the fool who doesn't draft me in the first round" is a quote from a Wisconsin BB player, vintage of Jess Settles...forget his name...it is Wisconsin talk. It was meant in jest...a groundless boast, grandiosity.

But...I do think Iowa will be good next year...obviously, as I stated before...each game that is won this year is epic, historical, and difficult to reproduce.

I am enjoying this year, while also looking forward to the next year, and next...when Fran has even more of his preferred talent to tinker with.

Good post. Couple thoughts.

I guess Woody wasn't blowing smoke when he said that in the past with Gabe around he could afford to be more aggressive with the fouls, but that he could play without foul trouble.

Can't fix stupid. Don't worry about remembering who said what about Woody, or other such things. When the chips are down they will remind all of us of who they are.

Thanks Dan...just like Old Faithful...

I especially liked HoustonREDHawk's observation that some people who were hammering Woody might now be talking out the other side of their mouth. Funny thing is I didn't mention anyone by name but here you are one minute after I posted poking jibes at me like some naughty little first grader who doesn't know when to shut his mouth.

There is an old cliché about how some people can dish it out, but can't take it. Now, I don't know you rev, and I strongly suspect I'm lucky for that. But I simply must say that your internet persona leads me to believe you might be one of those kinds of folk.

Maybe it's best that when I make a generic comment without naming names, you stop raising your hand like I called you.

Dan...go to the mall and walk...you need a hobby...something to focus on, other than baiting... I don't think you have a very good sleep cycle either... That might be your second task. Let me know how it works out. Nothing but the best!

Got me good there rev. o_O Yeah, I must need a hobby because on the 21st post of a thread, the first time I posted, after you've posted three times on the thing, I pounced in like a savage and said, "Good post. Couple thoughts."

I then made a complimentary observation about the subject at hand, and responded by adding my thoughts regarding a comment the poster I replied to had made.

And you call that baiting? Enough now, isn't it? This is the fourth post now, two by you and two by me, that have had no value to what was a halfway decent thread. If you haven't the maturity to allow other posters to express their thoughts without presuming they are talking about you specifically and tossing your cookies...than maybe you shouldn't be posting? You start these whiny, poor me, quit picking on me, posts. You become defensive and insulting. And you drag me and others into these stupid spats!!

Just, stop. You are accomplishing nothing.

Rev, you might want to take your own advice once in a while.:)

Please use ignore for me Dan...thanks!

Why? So you can keep responding to my posts with impunity? Sorry, been there, done that, isn't a fair solution. Try this, I won't mention you, or respond to you, as I have already stopped, unless you get smarmy with me first.

Let it be someone else's job to point out that as recently as the first Purdue game you were slamming Gesell and Woody to the point of saying they should take themselves out of the game. Near as I can tell rev, you do a pretty good job of proving what a great guy you are on here without anyone else's help. I just want nothing to do with you, or from you.

Back to the op. I have picked on Woody in the past, but my attentions wasn't to trash the kid.
It was more my frustration in wanting him to play at the level I thought he could play at.
I love this kid, he's my favorite player on this team.
He plays the game the way it should be played.
Tough nose defender and best passing big man I've seen in awhile.
It's great to see him having success. He deserves it and will be missed next year.

C'mon Dan, criticism of any player, even Woody, is warranted sometimes, as long as its not over the top or personal. As I said, I freely admit that I had been harsh in my criticism of Woody before but that doesn't make me stupid. I wasn't wrong either. Woody getting blocked by the rim or a sub 6 footer is worthy of criticism. Or missing lay ups. Or committing silly fouls 20 feet from the hoop. All of that is worthy of criticism.... but Woody has stepped his game up and I love acknowledging that and saying it. Why can't people just enjoy his development and growth as a player and just say "wow. he's come a long way." ? There shouldn't be any need to trash anyone who criticized him before. We are looking at the best Iowa season in 20-25 years (so far) and we're still getting in these little pissing matches over things people posted 3 years ago. Don't let pettiness steal your joy.

^^^^ You make some good points IronFist.

"....As long as its not over the top or personal.", you bet, as long as its not over the top or personal people should be able to express their opinions or criticisms.

We lose 4 great Seniors to graduation. Only a fool thinks we won't take a step back next year. This is a once in a generation team this year.

You're probably right, but McCaffery has a track record here. Every single team he has coached has been better than the one before it, even when he has lost some pretty impressive players. I'm not going to count out next year's team until they prove otherwise.

I think next year will be fun and exciting, but it's just crazy to think we will be even close to being as good as we are this year. No team ever lost 4 senior starters and was better.
