You think there is a 2 star diff between Carton and Joe T?

It depends on how his shot is. Right now it looks busted, which will make things tougher once he faces quicker guards. If he can shoot well enough to keep defenders honest, it may be interesting.

Yes. Cartons is already one of best pgs in the league.

Sad Fran not able to close the deal on that one.
JoeT looks kind of like that PG for Michigan Xavier Simpson. I doubt JoeT going to ever be a great shooter, needs to concentrate on dribble drive finish or pass.

Some Statistical Comparisons:

Joe Toussaint
5 games played (0 starts). 70 minutes 14.0 mpg
7.8 ppg 2.4 rpg 10 assists 5 turnovers 5 steals
42.9% FG's (12-28) 72.2% FT's (13-18) 33.3% 3Pt (2-6)

D.J. Carton
6 games played (0 starts), 133 minutes 22.2 mpg
11.2 ppg 3.3 rpg 18 assists 10 turnovers 3 steals
56.8 FG's (25-44) 57.9% FT's (11-19) 35.3% 3Pt (6-17)

Seen a couple of OSU's games and Carton is much like JT for Iowa a spark off the bench. Carton like JT can be really good, but also can be a big out of control and turns the ball over. JT is more aggressive on the defensive end from what little I've seen of the two playing, and seems more efficient when attacking and getting to the line. Carton is OSU's 2nd leading scorer and is more a focal point of the offense as a scorer.

Should be a fun matchup when they face off.

IMO Toussaint was a star behind Carton because he's not as good on offense. Two stars no. Rivals has it 3 star vs 4 star. I'd rather have both!

The thing that is getting the JT hype machine pumping full bore is the fact he does things that no one else can do on the team. Therefore, some people are hoping he is the savior this team needs and has needed at that position for sometime.

Going off memory so this could be off...but JT reminds me of Tony Freeman. Although I think Freeman was a better shooter at this stage.

Agree.

It's kind of like comparing Simpson and Cassius Winston.

Over all Winston is better but when the two play each other Simpson causes Winston all kinds of trouble because hes a great defender.

I'll be real happy if Joe T makes DJs life miserable when they play each other.

I really liked Freeman with his ability to get to the rim, but that guy seemed to leave a lot at the rim. A buddy of mine played with him in PT League and his points came from following Freeman into the lane and putting the back back in when he missed.

I certainly hope this is not the second showing of Freeman. Again, athletic to get to the rim, but finishing, he couldn't do it consistently. JT seems to be able to get to the rim and finish. His shot will get more consistent, but that's my first observation.

You don’t know that his shot will get more consistent. Some guys aren’t good shooters and never will be. I think it’s disappointing and troubling to lose any in-state kid that lives an hour from campus to a mid-tier conference opponent. I get it if the kid goes to Michigan State, Michigan, or North Carolina but Ohio State? You just can’t lose that battle if you want to take the next step. It’s great if we get to the tourney but we aren’t going to advance further by losing players like Carton and Foster. I guess that’s the reality of where the program is at right now.

I think this is spot on. We are so enamored with the uniqueness of JT’s athleticism on this roster we are projecting expectations onto him that are not warranted from a skill standpoint.

We’ve seen this before—people were posting that Basabe might go pro after his freshman or sophomore year simply because he was one of the few competent players with athletic ability his freshman year.

JT’s upside seems to be Lewis Jackson from Purdue a few years ago. Small, sturdy, gritty, athletic point guard that penetrates and defends but likely struggles at the rim and with long range shooting percentages.

Michigan isn't a better program, nor do they have a better name than Ohio State.

Too early to tell. I know who everyone would choose right now, and Carton is getting great reviews from the talking heads. I have only seen a few minutes of one OSU game and have seen maybe 50 min total of JoeT, mostly against not-so-great competition. We will know pretty quickly, as the real schedule begins Thursday.

JoeT needs to work hard on his shot, keep learning how to run the offense, and always try to be the best on-ball defender on the floor. If he does that, with his quickness and NY swagger, Iowa got a keeper.

Or, even more than 2 stars as far as contributions for this season. Joe will catch up by their junior seasons because Carton will be in the NBA then.

Joe T is not a project. He knows how to play, he just needs experience. He reminds me a lot of Yogi Farrell. Yogi a better shooter though. That will come.
I like JoeT, but he needs a lot of work on his shot to get close to Yogi (and I hate IU). I think the comparison with Zavier Simpson is more appropriate, but I don't see Simpson's BB IQ and court awareness yet in JoeT. Simpson was not a natural shooter, but after a lot of work, he is now pretty decent. I love his sky hook, which you NEVER see in a small guard, or even a big anymore.

I am not a fan of the game managing PG that Fran seems to embrace. I don't know if this is really Fran's preference or a result of recruiting misses. Either way, it doesn't make sense given Fran's stated preference to play fast. A better PG isn't the silver bullet, but it is definitely the foundation from which you build.

Iowa needs a guy to push the envelope in certain situations. Touissant is going to make some freshman mistakes, but he will also make some things happen that otherwise wouldn't. We just have to hope as he gains experience the mistakes decrease and the play making increases. Carton is not being expected to be the savior of OSU hoops like some feel Touissant is for Iowa. Carton also has more talent to work with than Touissant.

Freeman was a bigger more physical guard.

Only time will tell.
