Zach Edey

5 possession against a team like the Kings and he will be on the floor gasping for air. If he evens attempts to run the court.
Its more the fact that he can't guard anyone on the perimeter. Same problem Garza has.

If you can be effective in spurts they'll take that but if you're a liability on one end all the time it's a stretch.

Combine with the fact that nba teams aren't interested in playing offense out of the post and most post players don't get a lot of interest.

Garza is only hanging on in the nba because he's such a good 3pt shooter.

I just thought Edey might be a decent role player cause he is a dominant center. And rebounder.

Eye on College Basketball did a good segment on Edey's decision at the opening of their podcast this week. Basically they said that Edey will likely be a 2nd round pick if he were to stay--obviously the interesting thing for him will be if the money matches. Last year pick #51 signed a 2 year/ $2.74 million contract which is about the range that Edey is projected to go. So if money is the only consideration, Purdue needs to find at least 1.5 million just to match. It'll be interesting to see play out. I for sure thought that AJ Green would be headed to ISU or Duke last year and was surprised when he stayed in the draft--and he didn't even get drafted. I honestly think it's a 50/50 chance he stays.

Difference is, little of that 2.74 is guaranteed. I've heard they could be close to 1.5 mil though. I'd be shocked if he's gone from what I've heard.

I doubt he leaves. I wouldn't if I was him. He's a fraction of the player Garza was despite having far more inherited advantage built in. He just doesn't fit in with today's NBA. Up to him to prove me wrong...but he won't. Might as well make money where he can actually be successful, in college.

Garza fits in better with today's NBA and we see how he's being treated.

The example they used, the first year of the contract was fully guaranteed for the 51st pick last year, the second year was the team option. But you're right, that's not always the case.

I just don't think it's ever as simple as it seems--yes, he could get paid basically the same or slightly more than he would in the NBA if he were to return. He would also be 1 year closer to a possible second contract if he were to go to the NBA. It really depends on what he values and what his family/team values as well. One thing they discussed on the podcast is how the NBA scouts like how raw (but still really good) he is as a player since he basically has only played basketball for 5 years now. He's not a typically 7'4 player who's had a basketball in his hand since he was young. So if he does well in the pre-draft workouts and combine, scouts will like that he's mold-able.

That's the great thing about the NBA feedback--sometimes it looks on paper that a guy isn't ready for the NBA and then gets a verbal promise that certain teams will take him in the 40s and guarantee him a contract. Sometimes that's all it takes to get guys to stay in--Kenyon talked about that a bit last year with Kris and how they really had a closer decision on staying vs going than I think the general public realized.

Offensively yes, defensively Garza is worse than Eddy.

Drop coverage is becoming a little more common now because coaches would rather you take 2s than 3s.

Eddy could potentially play some drop coverage because he's big enough to defend against the lob.

Theres no defense that works for Luka unfortunately.

I'm glad he's back. Better for college ball and I don't watch much NBA anyway. Wish more guys would stay in school or it was like MLB where you needed to stay three years or until 21 years old. But with so many more international players taking spots, I guess you need to get in when you can or might not be a place left.

I congratulate Edey for taking the altruistic route and remaining as an amateur.

<sarcasm>
As good as Edey is, was he going to be a high pick in the NBA draft. Twenty years ago, he would have been a lottery pick. Today, is he even a first round pick?

Might have to squint to see "sarcasm" at the bottom of the quoted post. But no, he wasn't going to be a high pick, if picked at all, so he'll make a lot more money from NIL coming back than risking it going pro now.
