Title IX: Athletes can play amid sexual misconduct inquiries

I just took a ton of heat for stating that we shouldn't necessarily have a problem with an accused player participating in a sport.

When asked about the due process provision, the senior administration official said Thursday that to remove a student from an athletic team, or any activity, before a finding of responsibility is an unfair burden.

Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever conference overshadowed by uncomfortable exchange with reporter

Caitlin Clark was introduced to Indiana as a member of the Fever for the first time Wednesday, as the No. 1 draft pick joined with general manager Lin Dunn and coach Christie Sides to meet with media at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The reception awaiting Clark dwarfed any crowd that has covered the Fever in recent memory, as will be the case for most of her firsts in the WNBA.

Among the credentialed media in attendance was Gregg Doyel, an award-winning columnist for The Indianapolis Star. When it was his turn to pose a question to Clark, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands in her direction, which Clark recognized as the signal she gives her family after every game. That gesture has become associated with Clark and was featured in one of her State Farm commercials. When Clark made the association, Doyel responded, “Start doing it to me, and we’ll get along just fine.”

The reaction to Doyel’s comments was swift and unfavorable. There was near-universal agreement that what Doyel said was inappropriate, disrespectful to Clark and generally uncomfortable. The uproar was so overwhelming that Doyel felt compelled to express remorse for his remarks, writing on X, “My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better.”

Doyel also wrote a column in The Indianapolis Star apologizing to Clark for the interaction.

As Clark’s star moves to the WNBA, she is inadvertently shining a light on a press corps that has been pretty sparse due to a relative lack of media investment in women’s basketball. As a result, reporters who don’t have experience covering women’s sports are parachuting in to be part of the Clark phenomenon, which will result in some growing pains as they learn about women’s basketball. But that doesn’t excuse a lack of tact when it comes to dealing with WNBA athletes. The league and its teams will have to develop a more robust system when it comes to credentialing reporters as interest in the game grows, but the media itself has a responsibility to treat players with respect and professionalism. That bar wasn’t met in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Question for the Arizona peeps. What's going on with the Coyotes?

Glendale was threatening to lock them out of the arena they play in due to failing to pay taxes, and it seems like they are telling them to leave town. They have already left one arena in Phoenix. How many arena options for an NHL team are there in the Phoenix area? Was this all about finances, or are there deeper issues which may signal a move to another market?

Watchdog group asks feds to probe Trump over $50 million 'nonexistent' loan to his Chicago company

A watchdog group on Thursday asked the Justice Department and the FBI to investigate whether former President Donald Trump made “material false statements” on federal financial disclosure reports when he claimed that one of his Chicago companies had a $50 million outstanding loan.

Noah Bookbinder, president of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington — known as CREW — said in a letter to the FBI and Justice Department it’s possible that the loan, connected to the development of the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, may be “nonexistent.”

Trump reported the loan as a liability of Chicago Unit Acquisition LLC on personal financial disclosure statements he filed as a candidate and president between 2015 and 2023, Bookbinder said.

“There is now credible evidence, however, that Mr. Trump’s statements regarding the Chicago loan were not true,” Bookbinder wrote in his letter to federal authorities. The loan issue came to light in a January 2024 report from a court-appointed monitor, hired to review Trump financial statements, an outgrowth of a New York civil fraud case against Trump in which it was determined he overstated his wealth.

Bookbinder wrote, “there is no public record of the loan, which is contrary to how most real estate loans of that magnitude are handled.” He said in his letter that while it is not clear why Trump “would have reported a nonexistent loan as a liability to one of his own companies,” it could have been a part of a “tax-avoidance scheme.”

The public financial disclosure system was established so that, Bookbinder said, the “assets, income and debt obligations” of candidates and the president “can be meaningfully assessed for conflicts of interest, including those that could expose the country to possible national security risk.”

As of late Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for Trump had not replied to an email seeking comment on the CREW letter.

Auto and Home, Insurance & Maintenance Costs Soaring and People Are Angry

Are you angry? I drive nice old cars...Insurance up. Homeowners? Up (got hit with hail in 2020). I do my own work, but got sticker shock on a washer that needs replaced.

Author puts a Biden v Trump spin on it, but I'm not voting for anyone known to be running this time (and last time).

This should be entertaining.

Early PT for CC

I really think CC will settle in quickly with so many scorers around her. But, lets say she struggles early on. Coach really has to give her the keys and stay with her does she not? I mean with the TV exposure, ticket and merch sales, and excitement level at an all time high, she'll have to ride or die with Clark, don't you think? I can see her getting more breaks, especially since they'll expect more from her on the defense then she's had to put out in college, and she'll probably pick up more fouls, but you'd think they have to go all in with "the Clark experience"?
