Hundreds protest in Niger demanding departure of US troops

In March, Niger suspended its military cooperation with the US after military government leaders severed ties with France last year.

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of Niger’s capital to demand the departure of United States troops, after the military government further shifted its strategy by ending a military accord with the US and welcoming Russian military instructors.

Marching arm in arm through central Niamey on Saturday, the crowd waved Nigerien flags in a demonstration that recalled anti-French protests that spurred the withdrawal of France’s forces from Niger last year after the army seized power in a coup.

One hand-written sign in English read “USA rush out of Niger”, in a show of support for the military government and its decision in mid-March to revoke an accord that had allowed around 1,000 US military personnel to operate on its territory out of two bases.

“We’re here to say no to the American base, we don’t want Americans on our soil,” protester Maria Saley told the Reuters news agency on the sidelines of the march.

The crowd was also heard chanting “Down with American imperialism” and “The people’s liberation is on the march.”

Until the coup, Niger had remained a key security partner of France and the US, which used it as a base as part of international efforts to curb a decade-old rebellion in West Africa’s Sahel region.

In March the country suspended its military agreement with the US. The US military had some 650 personnel working in Niger in December, according to a White House report to Congress. The US military operates a major airbase in the Niger city of Agadez, some 920km (572 miles) from Niamey, using it for manned and unmanned surveillance flights and other operations.

A drone base known as Air Base 201 near Agadez was also built at a cost of more than $100m. Since 2018 the base has been used to target ISIL (ISIS) fighters and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate, in the Sahel region.

Ties with Russia

Meanwhile, France also agreed to withdraw its troops last September in the wake of the July coup that overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

The new authorities in Niger joined military-run governments in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso in ending military deals with one-time Western allies, quitting the regional political and economic bloc ECOWAS and also fostering closer ties with Russia.

The arrival on Wednesday of Russian military instructors and equipment was further evidence of the military government’s openness to closer cooperation with Moscow, which is seeking to boost its influence in Africa.

A few Russian flags were visible at the protest, but some citizens told Reuters on Friday they did not want the welcome Russian defence assistance to lead to a permanent presence in Niger.

“We must not subsequently see the implementation of Russian foreign military bases,” said Abdoulaye Seydou, the coordinator of the M62 coalition of civil society groups that led anti-French protests last year.

His concerns were echoed by student Souleymane Ousmane: “This is how the French and the Americans and all the other countries settled in Niger – from military cooperation, they ended up occupying large parts of our country,” he told Reuters.

It is still unclear, however, if or when the US troops will leave.

Evidence around youth gender care 'remarkably weak', major English review says

Surprised this isn't getting play around here. The Atlantic Piece is at bottom of post.

Britain Is Leaving the U.S. Gender-Medicine Debate Behind

The Cass report challenges the scientific basis of medical transition for minors.
By Helen Lewis

In a world without partisan politics, the Cass report on youth gender medicine would prompt serious reflection from American trans-rights activists, their supporters in the media, and the doctors and institutions offering hormonal and surgical treatments to minors. At the request of the English National Health Service, the senior pediatrician Hilary Cass has completed the most thorough consideration yet of this field, and her report calmly and carefully demolishes many common activist tropes. Puberty blockers do have side effects, Cass found. The evidence base for widely used treatments is “shaky.” Their safety and effectiveness are not settled science.

The report drew on extensive interviews with doctors, parents, and young people, as well as on a series of new, systematic literature reviews. Its publication marks a decisive turn away from the affirmative model of treatment, in line with similar moves in other European countries. What Cass’s final document finds, largely, is an absence. “The reality is that we have no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress,” Cass writes. We also don’t have strong evidence that social transitioning, such as changing names or pronouns, affects adolescents’ mental-health outcomes (either positively or negatively). We don’t have strong evidence that puberty blockers are merely a pause button, or that their benefits outweigh their downsides, or that they are lifesaving care in the sense that they prevent suicides. We don’t know why the number of children turning up at gender clinics rose so dramatically during the 2010s, or why the demographics of those children changed from a majority of biological males to a majority of biological females. Neither “born that way” nor “it’s all social contagion” captures the complexity of the picture, Cass writes.

What Cass does feel confident in saying is this: When it comes to alleviating gender-related distress, “for the majority of young people, a medical pathway may not be the best way to achieve this.” That conclusion will now inform the creation of new state-provided services in England. These will attempt to consider patients more holistically, acknowledging that their gender distress might be part of a picture that also includes anxiety, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, or past trauma.

This is a million miles away from prominent American medical groups’ recommendation to simply affirm an adolescent’s stated gender—and from common practice at American gender clinics. For example, a Reuters investigation found that, of 18 U.S. clinics surveyed, none conducted the lengthy psychological assessments used by Dutch researchers who pioneered the use of medical gender treatments in adolescents; some clinics prescribe puberty blockers or hormones during a patient’s first visit. Under pressure from its members, the American Academy of Pediatrics last year commissioned its own evidence review, which is still in progress. But at the same time, the group restated its 2018 commitment to the medical model.

The Cass report’s findings also contradict the prevailing wisdom at many media outlets, some of which have uncritically repeated advocacy groups’ talking points. In an extreme example recently noted by the writer Jesse Singal, CNN seems to have a verbal formula, repeated across multiple stories, to assure its audience that “gender-affirming care is medically necessary, evidence-based care.” On a variety of platforms, prominent liberal commentators have presented growing concerns about the use of puberty blockers as an ill-informed moral panic.

Why an Omaha strip club owner has a 'JESUS ♥ STRIPPERS' sign-truck

The 20-by-10-foot sign that proclaims “JESUS ♥ STRIPPERS” on the back of a flatbed truck parked outside Club Omaha near 120th Street and West Center Road on Friday was hard to miss.
Shane Harrington, the strip club’s owner, said the sign is the culmination of months of frustration after trying to reach deals with local advertising agencies to promote a car giveaway.
“We were going to do a commercial with a local TV station, rent billboards, work with a mass text company,” he said. “But they canceled, or wouldn’t return our calls.”

Harrington is no stranger to controversy. He sued over Nebraska liquor laws for his gentlemen’s club in Hastings and later staged a protest at a busy intersection in Omaha with dancers wearing ... not much.

Calls to churches in the area about the sign’s claim were not returned Friday afternoon.

The nearby Jesus Christ Soul Therapy Center, which advertises “Shambhala meditation healing tools, soul therapy meditation systems, and vibrational therapies to support body, mind and spirit,” and was founded by the Sanat Buddha Maitreya Kumara did respond to a World-Herald inquiry about the sign.
Maitreya Kumara, who claims to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, said in a statement: “The response to does Jesus love strippers is: God names Jezebel for a reason. Jezebel is a demon found in strippers, prostitutes, sex workers only fans, things like that, so no, Jesus does not like strippers.”

A truck with a 20-by-10-foot sign stating “JESUS STRIPPERS” was parked in front of Club Omaha near 120th Street and West Center Road on Friday. Club owner Shane Harrington said he made the sign in response to local advertisers refusing to work with him.
MIKE BELL, THE WORLD-HERALD
Harrington said he understands the sign will be controversial.
He said he plans to buy another sign for a truck in Lincoln. The sign-truck will drive through town, especially during large events such as concerts and Husker games, he said.

“Other people who have been bullied will embrace it, I think,” he said.

Pompeo warns diversity chief who espoused anti-American 'Marxist dogma' will 'destroy the State Department'

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the State Department's new senior DEI hire will "destroy" the foreign affairs agency and make America "less safe" in an interview Friday with Fox News Digital.

Zakiya Carr Johnson was hired by the State Department last week as chief officer of diversity, equity and inclusion. Fox News Digital exposed her past anti-American remarks, including her saying the U.S. represented a "failed historical model" embedded with racism, colonialism and other isms. Carr Johnson has also called for tradition to be dismantled.

Pompeo believes Carr Johnson's hire was part of the "Biden administration's core commitment… to inflict a divisive, un-American, Marxist dogma on the American people."

"I don't think [the State Department] frankly believes it. I think they're catering to the progressive left of their base in an election year, and the harm is that they will destroy the State Department in this way, and, frankly, the capacity of America to deliver the diplomacy that other nations around the world are counting on," he told Fox News Digital.

Pompeo added that years ago he "never would have dreamed" such divisive language would be embraced in the federal government.

"So this progressive [movement]… becoming so radicalized is something that has moved very quickly, spread rapidly, and if not put in check will only continue to metastasize in ways that undermine our republic," he said.

The State Department has doubled down in defending Carr Johnson, touting her as an expert in the field of DEI.

PENTAGON EQUITY CHIEF PRAISES BOOK CALLING 9/11 FIRST RESPONDERS 'MENACES' AS SHE PUSHES FOR 'REVOLUTION'.

Pompeo stressed that "America should not be represented by individuals who hate America" like Carr Johnson.

When asked about Carr Johnson's hiring at Thursday's press briefing by Fox News' Griff Jenkins, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller responded that there are "different ways to love America."

However, Pompeo explained that was simply the State Department's spin and not reflective of Carr Johnson's verbatim statements.

"She doesn't say she loves America. Only the State Department spokesperson said that she loves America. What she said is that America is a broken model, and when she stares at America, she sees the '1619 Project,'" he said.

The 1619 Project is essentially a perspective of America's founding through the lens of critical race theory.

Pompeo believes Carr Johnson will have a demoralizing effect on State Department staff and cause talent to leave.

"She will have her hand in promotions," he said. "So think about this: You're a young Foreign Service Officer, and you're hoping that you'll get promoted to the next level and get an assignment in a country that you want to be in. And she says, 'No, we can't pick you because you didn't say the right thing about your pronouns,' or 'You didn't say the right thing about diversity, equity and inclusion.' Or ‘You happen to be White or Asian, so you're not in the favored group.' And therefore now you can't get promoted."

"Imagine anything more discouraging for people who are working hard on behalf of our country at the State Department," Pompeo continued.

"Instead of looking at individuals, the Marxists see groups. They see division. They don't see accumulated growth. They see how it is that we can gain power over other people in a way that is unrelated to any true merit," he said. "We shouldn't be looking for a State Department that is divided by race or by gender or by sexuality. Those are big mistakes that will harm American diplomacy and, frankly, make every American less safe."

Under Biden, the State Department implemented a mandate that all employees must show through documentation that they are committed to DEI in order to be eligible for a promotion or higher pay, Fox News Digital reported Thursday.

Pompeo called the policy "dangerous."

"When I hear someone say that the State Department is now requiring - forcing - people to speak about a certain set of issues in a way that they may or may not agree with, that's really kind of a dangerous place for a nation to find itself in," he said. "To think that the senior leadership at the State Department would condone something like that, I find it antithetical to my understanding of what has made America such a special, exceptional nation."

"When I was the Secretary of State, we told people, 'You're going to get promoted when you deliver good outcomes on behalf of the United States of America, real diplomatic success, real technical success,'" Pompeo continued. "We didn't care what race you were. We didn't care if you mouthed the right words. None of those things were relevant to promotions and hiring. We were looking for talent."

Woman found dead in Iowa, two suspects found dead in Wisconsin home after hours long standoff

An Iowa woman is dead as the result of foul play, and a 13-year-old was found dead as well Wednesday night. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said the two suspects are dead after they barricaded themselves in a home in the Town of Albion.

Around 7 p.m., the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an unresponsive person at a home in Dubuque County, Iowa. When they got to the home, in the 9800 block of Haxbylane Road, they found a woman dead. Investigators said her death was the result of foul play.

The woman had two children, a 5-month-old baby and a teenager, about 13 years old, who were staying with her in the home where she was found. But authorities did not find either of the children there.

Authorities in Iowa say they later learned that the 5-month-old baby was turned over to a random Wisconsin home.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office said their person of interest was later reported to be involved in a vehicle pursuit in Dane County, Wisconsin.

They say during the chase, the fleeing vehicle was disabled and the people inside the vehicle tried to run. One of those occupants of the vehicle was the 13-year-old child Dubuque authorities had tried to find.

Later, that 13-year-old was found dead. The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says they do not know how the teenager died.

The two suspects, a male and a female, were found dead inside an Albion home, in the 1300 block of Washington Road, after hours of negotiations with police.

In a Facebook post, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office says they tried to stay in contact with the armed suspect inside the home on Ramsey Rd. That armed suspect is believed to be a man, but this has not been confirmed by police. Police say they used a robot to go inside the residence and found that the man had taken his own life. It is not clear how the female died. Limited information is available at this time about the two, but it is possible the man is connected to an ongoing foul play investigation in Iowa where a woman was found dead.

On Wednesday night, during the standoff, Dane County Emergency Management asked people to stay inside their homes, lock their doors and avoid the area around Ramsey Road in the town of Albion.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says they will release more information Thursday morning.

Gordon Ramsay’s London pub taken over by squatters: ‘Absolute nightmare scenario’

Gordon Ramsay once said he doesn’t “run restaurants that are out of control” — but that’s apparently not the case at one of his London eateries.

A swarm of squatters have shacked up inside the celebrity chef’s $16.1 million pub — using Ramsay’s own kitchen appliances to barricade themselves inside, according to a report.

Shocking photographs taken by The Sun show the “professional squatters” holed up inside York & Albany pub, which the “Hell’s Kitchen” host was about to sign over to new partners in a multi-million dollar deal.

One person was seen barefoot and sprawled across on a black leather sofa inside the restaurant, with their personal belongings and debris, including empty wine bottles, strewn across the floor.

What appears to be a filthy plush dog toy is seen tossed on the floor near the swanky front bar that months earlier had been adorned with fresh flowers and pricey cocktails.

Another disheveled-looking man — sporting two black eyes, a massive hoodie, flip flops and athletic tape wrapped around his knee — was also seen walking around the exterior of the swanky pub.

“It’s an absolute nightmare scenario for poor Gordon,” a source told the UK outlet Thursday.

“The pub was temporarily closed while he was finalizing a new lease, and during this handover period, a gang of professional squatters somehow bypassed all the security and CCTV, and got themselves in.

“They’ve now boarded themselves in the building and are slowly taking over the place, leaving their crap everywhere and brazenly telling locals this is now their home.

“They’ve glued tight all the locks and are cooking up a storm in the kitchen, which is especially galling for Gordon.”

The insider said there are at least six “professional squatters” — five men and one woman — living inside the restaurant and its attached bedrooms.

“God knows the damage and filth,” said the source.

Ramsay has reportedly called police to obtain an eviction notice, “but it’s proving an absolute nightmare.”

The squatters themselves have threatened legal action against anyone that tries to force them out.

Calling themselves “The Occupiers,” the group slapped a notice on the front door claiming they are entitled to stay in the pub because it “is a non-residential building.”

“Take notice that we occupy this property and at all times there is at least one person in occupation,” the notice reads.

“That if you attempt to enter by violence or by threatening violence we will prosecute you … You may receive a sentence of up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £5,000 ($6,200)”

The situation has left the notoriously foul-mouthed television chef “at the end of his tether.”

“Not surprisingly, a few choice words have been said,” the source told The Sun.

Once a sanctuary city, Denver takes new immigrant policy to front lines, sending city officials to Texas.

Denver rolled out its new immigration strategy this week, part of which includes confronting the crisis on the frontlines.

State of play: Two city officials traveled to El Paso, Texas, for a three-day trip to tell over 20 immigrant shelter providers that Mayor Mike Johnston's arms-wide-open approach has changed, Denver Human Services spokesperson Jon Ewing tells us.
  • The city has hit its resource limit, and long-term emergency support — like hotel lodging — is over for newcomers who aren't already within its shelter system.
Why it matters: Denver officials have visited the U.S.-Mexico border before, but this is the first time their message on the ground has been a largely unwelcoming one. It's also the latest sign Johnston is reversing course on his earlier tone toward immigrants.

Reality check: Similar efforts have been made by officials from Chicago and New York to "discourage" travel — but it hasn't stopped people from heading there, Ruben Garcia, who heads Annunciation House, which operates several immigrant shelters in El Paso, told Denverite.

The other side: Johnston's new policy is raising alarm among local service providers and advocacy groups, who call it "short-sighted" and "uninformed."
  • "The unwelcoming policy will push people who have a support network here to arrive in another city where they do not. It will separate people from loved ones and likely destabilize communities in other receiving cities," AFSC Colorado shared in a statement with Axios Denver.
The bottom line: The mayor is walking back his previous and unpopular migrant response strategy, which was projected to cost as much as $180 million this year and require budget cuts that slashed taxpayer services.

If migration patterns hold true — and President Biden doesn't issue the executive order he's hinted at to significantly limit southern border crossings by the end of this month — city officials say a surge could be on the way in late spring.
