“I’ve lived in Minneapolis my entire life. I’m leaving Friday. I no longer recognize my hometown.”

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Minneapolis is my home. My happiest memories are here. It’s where I learned to ride a bike, had my first date, received my high school diploma.

But today, I’m too afraid to even walk in my neighborhood by myself.

The ACE Hardware down the street? The one that I used to bike to in the summer? Robbed twice in the past five days.

The Walgreens next to my elementary school? Molotov cocktail thrown into it.

The Lake Harriet Bandshell, where we spent countless Mother’s Days? Homeless encampment popped up next door.

These are the things you don’t read about in the news.

Ten minutes from my house, at 38th and Chicago, there is still an autonomous zone. Police are not allowed to enter. Residents have died because medical authorities couldn’t get through, and carjackers (of which there are MANY) will speed into the zone to escape officer pursuit.

Who did you vote for in the elections?

More and more cops and good people will be leaving the large metros areas. The only ones that wont be are the ones that cant afford to and that's too bad. I fear, based on the rhetoric from our 'leaders' that none of this will change anytime soon.

If y'all wanna see Republicans elected in 2022 and 2024 just keep up the anti-law anti-order platform and there is gonna be an ass kicking coming at the ballot box like you haven't seen before. Mark my words. No one is going to give a rats ass about climate change if their communities aren't safe.

No way in hell Id live in the Twin Cities right now. Hell I don't even want to visit.

1) She’s probably just graduating and trying out for a career in political commentary.

2) How is this different than the "I'm moving to Canada" crowd?

We heard that every day from 2016 to 2020. Worked out well for republicans.

Oh well, the population has been shifting forever. Maybe this is exactly what the left-behind rural areas need.

I think you're overvaluing the extent of the problem. You do have some metros that scaled back policing and (arguably) saw crime increase because of it -- NYC, MPLS -- and other cities where response to unrest has been... silly. (Seattle, Portland) But it's not clear that the problem is large enough or widespread enough to really affect people's opinion on cities much yet. Plus, insomuch as civil unrest in the streets is a fad, I'm not sure it lasts too long.

But, sure, if we saw sustained unrest and failure adequately address it, understandably I'd expect people to become fed up.

I just think conservative media has overplayed the severity of the issue.

(the same way the media has overplayed race-based killings)

Minneapolis is going to look like Detroit in 15 years.

Agreed, right now it seems to be isolated to a few areas. Hopefully it stays in these areas. I used to love Minneapolis. No longer. I'll take my big city trips to Kansas City from now on.

These issues of unrest are gonna filter down on all kinds of things. Tourism, conventions etc.

Also... why doesn't MPLS do away with the autonomous zone and move the Floyd stuff to a safer public location.

If there was really such a break down of law and order I would think the city would elect a mayor who promised to restore law and order.

The people that primarily vote don’t live within the inner city, they hang out in the suburbs. They DGAF about the poors dealing with the skyrocketing crime. They get to vote to defund the police and pat each other on the back about their wokeness.

Lol. You are so frickin entertaining.

I hope more productive people move. then, but only then, will the left realize their patty-cake strategy in inner cities isn’t working... this is insanity.

Nice comment, how do you expect her to fix her community? The mayor is against order, so is the governor, the police can't enter certain areas, and I'm sure folks like you would call her a racist. Sounds like unless and until anti-American politicians get some cojones, this will not end.

Whiny because dipshits like you think it’s cool to burn down cities? In the mean time you clowns are still crying about THE CAPITOL INSURRECTION aka 25 rednecks getting into the capitol taking pictures, walking around being dumb. You have so little ground to stand on you can’t even formulate half arguments.
It wouldn't have gotten as bad as it has if the authorities, especially police and the leaders of the police union, didn't suck so much at their jobs.

Author should investigate all of the factors involved in how things get to what she describes.
Maybe you should move there and do that. Sounds like a win/win. Someone who isn't interested in solving the problems moves away and someone who has a great idea moves there. WIN/ WIN apathy moves out and passion moves in. I can post the phone # to some moving companies for you!

Problems they’re having are hardly unique to rest of the country. In simple terms, the last forty or fifty years have cemented some very alarming, and not hard to understand, trends. And just as is the case historically — in our own fücking country’s history, mind you — these trends yield all sorts of bad outcomes.

This shit lives similarly all over this country. Nobody needs to move to MPLS to understand what’s going on.

I sure hope the uselessness of mindless other-side scapegoating runs its course.

I had never heard of Gustavus Adolphus College, it's a very pretty campus:

St. Peter is a fantastic town. Sits in the Minnesota River valley just up the road from Mankato. That campus pic doesn't really tell you that entire campus is sitting on top of a hill above the town. That main road that leads to the administration building is a straight shot down to the main street and runs right by a beautiful city park. So when you drive by on 169 you can look right up the hill to Gustavus Adolphus.

C'mon, I'm sure plenty of you have taken this route to the Twin Cities.

I live in a town of less 1000 people for a reason. There are no trends.

She’s transferring schools. I’m guessing she planned to do that anyway.

Describe how your iron fisted, boot on the back of the neck strategy would make things super safe.

well let’s see. I’ve traveled extensively in this world and I’ve been to places where law and order are not optional or negotiable. Singapore is a great example of having zero tolerance for idiots who break the law, and aside from its oppressive heat/humidity it is a BEAUTIFUL city state.

I think they’re over the top strict about some things, but man it is nice to be perfectly safe in any neighborhood any time of the day... you should get out more and experience new places.

Got it, you are pro caning.
Try expressing an anti-government sentiment there.

Good for her. Instead of trying to help fix her community she wields the mighty pen and then wants to leave.

If she's white she's not allowed to help fix it.

I thought you, THE_DEVIL, liked people who wield the might pen. Or is it only when opinion articles are in line with your opinion?

Why are you shaming someone for making a decision with their life?

Was my statement incorrect?
So the people who are the cause of the problem should be left out? That is an over the top take that needs some evidence to back it up.
As I stated in my post, good for her. She can do as she pleases. Not shaming, finding it amusing.
