Good Afternoon!

Yesterday, as is tradition, I scurried over to the nearest Barnes and Noble to purchase a copy of Phil Steele's College Football Preview. Mr. Steele and his associates maintain a vast repository of CFB data. As I sift through the data I compared Iowa's 10 year record (an arbitrary factoid, I know) against the records of Iowa's rivals.

Iowa (2006-2015): 78-51 (44-37)
Nebraska (2006-2015): 86-47 (50-34) **I know this includes BIG XII and B1G.
Wisconsin (2006-2015): 98-35 (58-25)
Minnesota (2006-2015): 54-73 (26-54)
Iowa State (2006-2015): 41-82 (19-66)

Iowa is 2-3 against Nebraska.
Iowa is 3-5 against Wisconsin.
Iowa is 6-4 against Minnesota.
Iowa is 6-4 against Iowa State.

If one expands the window of the factoid to 15 years, here's how the records looks against rival programs:

Iowa is 2-3 against Nebraska (No games played between 2001 and 2005...they did play in 1999 and 2000..Nebraska won both).
Iowa is 7-6 against Wisconsin.
Iowa is 11-5 against Minnesota.
Iowa is 8-7 against Iowa State.

Since Hayden Fry's First Season in Iowa City (1979), Iowa has the following record against the core rivals:
Iowa is 3-8 against Nebraska.
Iowa is 22-10-1 against Wisconsin.
Iowa is 23-14 against Minnesota.
Iowa is 24-13 against Iowa State.

Hope all is well, friends. Go Hawks!

I know we come out on top of all those guys, but what happens when we add in MSU, who was becoming a nice rival until the divisions split?

Iowa's records against Iowa State and Minnesota speak to the inconsistencies of the KF era. Their records against Nebraska and Wisconsin are about what you'd expect.

But that 30 year look shows just how bad Wisconsin was in the 80s. I mean, Wisconsin football pretty much sucked forever before Barry Alvarez turned that program around in the 90s. The only thing that kept Wisconsin from being the worst B10 team for 25 years from the mid-60s to 1990 was Northwestern. Hell, they won 9 games between 1986 and 1990 (5-27 in the B10). Whatever inconsistency KF has shown, it's nothing compared to how awful UW used to be. In fact, Barry Alvarez's record in the B10 was only 65-60 from 1990 to 2005. From 1999 to 2015, KF's B10 record is 76-60. It's only since 2010 that Becky has been "dominant" in the sense of 10-win seasons most years. It's hardly a long enough stretch to project indefinite success for UW.

Minnesota was terrible during the 1980s and most of the 1990s too but they had a penchant, as they do now, for upsetting Iowa. They upset Iowa in 1981, 1984, and 1990.

One thinks of the stunning upsets Minnesota pulled off against Iowa in 2010 and 2011, too.
You're exactly right about Wisconsin and Alvarez. UW, did win 3 Rose Bowls under Alvarez.

He's one of the few Coaches in America who could survive such a record as well.
Probably because he has had 5 top 10 finishes since he has been in Iowa City. Pretty amazing considering the population, geographys, weather, and size of the university, etc.

I'd say it's more like because he had a contract for life and it's Iowa.

So with those Top 10 finishes it's pretty clear it's equally amazing losing to piss-poor teams on a regular basis then wouldn't you say? His tenure is the definition of inconsistent. Most Coaches at his pay scale don't survive those failures at that rate.

Over the same period (2006-2015), Iowa is 4-3 versus Michigan State in regular season play; 4-4 overall including the championship game last December.

Nah... just reminds me of where we were here on HR just one short year ago. The 2015 season happened and posters like 23 were no where to be seen/heard.

Now he/they have newfound confidence and are quick to point out their expertise on all things college football related.

Some things will never change.
