I’m a lifelong conservative that is currently without a political party because the Republican Party is an an absolute mess. This is also a wrestling board, I’m an Iowa fan, so my political preference should not be a discussion.
But, you absolutely do open yourself up to it when you go after someone as hard as you did for being “partisan”. Also, I admittedly find it very hard to believe that you are, or ever were, a conservative when all the laughing emoticons were placed on every conservative viewpoint, even the tamer ones and not once did you do so when the opposite viewpoints were expressed.
Just because you don’t like the rift in the current party structure(I truly hate it as well), it wouldn’t/shouldn’t make you change your belief structure if it indeed was as “lifelong” as you say…

Most reasoned, well informed, and well intentioned citizens would absolutely change their belief structure (or at least tribe) if their tribe leader co-opted the tribe in pursuit of absolute power.

Read what I posted again. I never said he couldn’t or shouldn’t leave the party. I talked about his conservative belief structure. If he wanted to leave the party I respect that choice, even if I don’t disagree with it.
My question was more about believing him when he said he was a conservative for life…
Also, you keep painting every conservative into a corner with Trump. I told you from the beginning I want him out. Hell, I even said I want him convicted so he would be out of the race. However, from what I am reading on even left leaning articles, there is nothing clear in the law that would stop him from running even from prison.
As sad as it is to say, I think he is probably the Republican candidate no matter what. If he is, the Democrat party could run a mannequin against him and win…

Many people think the modern Republican party isn't conservative. It's a MAGA cult.
It's certainly not fiscally conservative except when the Dems hold the presidency and they want to cry about the budget and threaten a shutdown, even though Trump increased the deficit by more than any other president in history in a 4 year period of time.
It's certainly not small government and supportive of individuals' rights.
The modern GQP is a theocratic MAGA fascist party that relies upon restricting voter turnout, gerrymandering voting districts, and propagating cultural fear and outrage on a 24/7 basis to scare their base into going to the polls because on policy itself, they're doing nothing for Americans and they know they won't win elections if every eligible voter went to the polls. These are objective facts, and I say this as a moderate independent. Reasonable people do not view the MAGA GQP as a serious political organization. It's a cult. They don't support serious policy to address any real issues in this country. The woke nonsense is all a distraction from real issues - healthcare, education, infrastructure, individual rights and liberty.
Before I vote, I Google the Republican politicians name alongside "Trump" or "stolen election". If they haven't condemned Trump and his stolen election claims, then I immediately refuse to consider voting for them. The single most important policy issue in America is whether the politicians are pro democracy and pro constitution.

I paint every conservative in a corner on Trump because the only conservatives who have spoken out against Trump have been removed or condemned from the party - Kinzinger, Cheney, Christie. Almost every single Republican member of Congress has vowed support for Trump and has entertained his stolen election claims and efforts to overturn the election. That's unacceptable. If you associate with the modern MAGA GQP, you're going to get lumped in with the extreme judgement that most normal, reasoned Americans have.
Look, the Republican Party is tore apart because many of the more conservative reps and senators are torn between committing political suicide or just waiting Trump out until 2028.
Make no mistake, any rep or senator that openly speaks out against him will lose a large part of the vote they need to win. It sucks, but it absolutely is true. The party needs to do what it can to survive trump and then hopefully have a push after to get back closer to its core conservative views…
I know many Catholics who left that organized church after the priest sexual abuse scandals emerged. However, they didn't necessarily change their lifelong values.
I would think it's fair to say a conservative Republican like @Mpchillin might similarly leave a MAGA far right Republican party in the wake of Trump scandals.

I didn't vote for Trump the first time, but I did the second because of his political choices made while president, and because of the horrific alternative. Though I think he is amazingly ungodly in many areas, I don't care about having a pastor-in-chief. All presidents are liars and cheats. I already have my pastor-in-chief, that is the Chief Shepherd.
I'm going to vote for a man who is closest in implementing my political values, and it sure can't be anybody on the current left. It doesn't make me a cultist, though I wouldn't necessarily be ashamed to be one.

Moderate as in willing to condemn Trump. I view the entire current GQP and a radical extremist party. I'd consider anyone like Romney, McCain, basically the typical Republican from pre MAGA as moderate by today's standard.
You say they'd be committing political suicide by condemning trump. I think the entire party has committed suicide and lost elections because of their refusal to condemn Trump. Independents and moderates such as myself will not consider any candidate or politician who doesn't have the moral integrity to stand up for democracy and condemn Trump.
