Paddock no longer on the team. Looks like St. John will start the year. What's up with Gunther? He looked good last year.

With Gilman, Clark, Brooks, Carton, Meyer, and Ryan coming off books. One would think Iowa has a good amount of ship $ to lure top recruits.

Lee, Murin, Costello, Troy will eat up a lot of it. With Iowa not getting Berge I feel Turk or Happel will make the move to 49 after BS graduates. Troy is interesting in the sense that he is very similar body type to Berge and could potentially wrestle 49 for a few years and then move up once Kemerer graduates. Haven't seen Troy since Cali state tournament where he wrestled at 152 so no clue if he has grown. With Paddock gone it puts a hitch in my start Marinelli at 65 this year and have him RS the following year and have Young 65 and Paddock 74. Young most likely will have to be 74 next year for us. I'm sure the staff is pushing real hard on Warner. Hope he's a hawk!

Nationally 65 is loaded! I love Alex's ability but red shirting him might be best. Would an low AA from Alex help win a team title? Redshirting him and letting him loose next year seems best for the young man but that's just my opinion. As always trust in TnT I guess.

If Alex continues to get bigger and wants to go he will go. It is up to him but it doesn't make sense to not at least wait until we see him at Midlands. He has a ways to go to be a full 165. He also has a ways to go on top. This weekend will give us an idea on how his mat wrestling is.

Obviously if Marinelli isn't going to be a factor in scoring points at NCAA's, then it's a no-brainer that he redshirt (not the case, IMO). That said, Iowa is many years removed from winning a Team National Title, and frankly haven't been in the hunt for one, so this year is the year they have a shot at it if things go well (you have to be good and lucky many years).

Unfortunately next year on paper we have little to no shot without some guys really stepping up beyond what we think they're capable of, so you put all your chips on the table in 2016 and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm sure there is some type of "plan" in place in regards to Marinelli and the future and what not. However, the further removed Iowa gets from winning National Titles the harder its going to be to get there, IMO. We certainly aren't going away, I have little doubt about that, but in order to be considered for MORE of the top talent, we have to prove we're capable of winning the damn thing every year. We've got some great talent in the room and coming, for sure. But we can't keep having a "plan" that keeps failing, waiting for "next year".

There are several teams that provide considerable lineups for Iowa to overcome this year, and I think those teams feel the same about Iowa. And they should. I personally don't feel Iowa is mortgaging it's future by wrestling Alex Marinelli, this year. On paper and on comments already coming from the Head Coach, he is clearly our best option at 165, "undersized" or not, though he should certainly have a say about what he wants to do on a personal level.

If Alex Marinelli wants to wrestle this year, you let him. If things work out and he helps bring a Title to Iowa City, great. If it doesn't happen that way, then Iowa goes another year same as the last several years, which is a lot more likely to happen without him. IF you win, there's an uptick on many levels. If not, you've lost a redshirt year for one year, for one guy.

In summary: Unless Alex Marinelli completely melts down in the face of College competition in the early going, you put him in the lineup for 2016/2017 University of Iowa Wrestling Team and don't look back.

Which has been confirmed about 100 times so I don't understand the angst regarding this(not from you). You have said numerous times there is no chance a true freshman is wrestling under Tom Brands. Glad to see you agree that it is going to happen in the right situation ;)

Long past actually.

Iowa's "banking" of redshirts hasn't exactly put them on top of the College Wrestling landscape lately, and it may in fact have cost them some recruits. But as per normal, I'll believe it when I see it. Hopefully sooner rather than later. (in other words Tommy and I don't see eye to eye on the true freshman situation..............)

This is Gilman's last year, right? Another true FR starter may happen next year at 125 in Lee.

Lee has the talent, but he may still be a bit undersized. A RS year would be recommended, unless somehow Iowa is in contention for team title next year, which seems unlikely with the departure of 4 AA's including top ranked Gilman and Clark.

I don't think a redshirt year is in Spencer's plans. He may be a little small, but I think he'd still win a national title as a true freshman. Not saying he won't redshirt -- just that I don't think that's his preference and I don't think he'd really need it. He'd probably be more dominant after a redshirt year, but he'd be pretty darn dominant without one, too.

It is in his plans WDM... Quite certain it was a point of discussion during his recruitment. All parties feel a RS next is best for Spencers development. I think you can even find him saying so himself in one of his interviews.

Interesting, Gobblin. I was told the opposite yesterday. Far from Gospel truth, but sounded pretty convincing. You absolutely could be correct. Usually are!

125- Wagner
133- Rathbun

Lee and his family want the RS year. 2020 is everyones goal and the redshirt next year benefits that.
Shoot, Gobblin -- somehow didn't even see this post. Obviously didn't read the thread carefully enough. Sure didn't mean to contradict you and never would have even speculated if I'd seen this from you. After hearing the contrary yesterday from someone I trust, I figured I'd throw that out there. My bad. Sounds like I got some inaccurate info. Should have just kept my mouth shut.

No sweat at all WDM... And you may very well be right. Things change. I just know it was a point of discussion between Spencer and his dad and the staff during his recruitment. They wanted the RS year to mature a bit more physically.

Lately, I'm off way more than I'm on. Since the graduation of the 2009/10 classes and first Schwab and then Zadick leaving the scoop well has been running pretty dry.

I do know the staff had a wrestle off of sorts a few nights back... Marinelli vs Young and Wilcke vs Bowman. Kemmerer wrestled also I just never got a name of who he wrestled. From the description I assume it was McQuillen. Kemmerer winning big was the only result I got.

Lol... It's monster bucks right now but thanks just the same! I'm 17' up a tree smelling like deer piss as I type.
Good man! Ah -- deer piss! Wonderful. Sitting here in the den, I'm happy to report I smell much better at the moment. At least my wife hasn't told me any different yet.;)

Kinglsayer,

AM and Young are pretty close but I would lean towards AM. 2 different type of wrestlers from what I have seen. AM is always going forward and somewhat methodical more like a unpolished Metcalf and Young is a riverboat gambler type. He will pull a big move out of nowhere similar to McDonough. Young does have a tendency to put himself in a bad spot but somehow finds a way out of it. I REALLY like and appreciate what each wrestler brings and you will also once they are on the mat in Carver!!!

PSU fan so probably not going to appreciate the exploits to the same extent as you but here is to looking forward to a 4 time AA career for Young but just not on top of the podium

You mean to tell me that there was a wrestle-off and no one got video? Come on!;)
