Imo, it’s best to have that figured out as early as possible. One needs to bulk up, one needs to cut.
Too late to bulk up now that the season has begun.
74 to 84? I do that every weekend.
You know my take...I want the best 10 on the mat. With all the money being thrown around, and of course the possibility of injuries, tomorrow is promise to no one. If Angelo is the best then let's roll him out so he can start enjoying the whole Hawkeye wrestling experience...and we can start enjoying his run to the finals. I know, wishful thinking, but I want to see what the young man can do.
Being around long enough should have nothing to do with it. May the best man win...and may the second best find a new weight to excel at. And if Angelo starts they all know the ramifications of being second best at a weight...winner starts and the other man awaits his opportunty.
I want to challenge/beat Penn State and I want our exceptional outcome this year to draw in more exceptional recruits, and I just don't think we're going to do either - challenge PSU or draw exceptional recruits - if we're not putting our best 10 on the mat. I don't care what their names are, where they came from, or who they're related to. If they win the weight I want them on the mat...this year.
FFS can we ever even start a season without an injury issue. I'm getting old but I was thinking he got hurt late last season in an open. Not sure what that injury was but hopefully the brace is precaution from that recovery.
This is wrestling, if a guy thinks he can be a National Champion at a weight and proves he is the best guy on the team at that weight then he should be the guy. Gabe, the rest of the team and potential recruits know how it works. None of them would appreciate being forced to go up a weight for the team if they were the best guy.
Technically he is too short for 174 too but you use what you got.
He had a knee issue going back to 8th grade, freshman year.
Not sure if he ever got it fixed in high school or not.
Absolutely ridiculous Gabe is wrestling 184. And they wonder why they get their asses kicked in recruiting. Why would you want to come here. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out 184 is good for Nelson and the team. 174 should be Gabe and PK battling it out. But he is a Brands so. We like our guys.
Think it would be a worse look if Brands is making wrestlers go their non optimum weight.
Did you ever think about the chance that Brands couldn't beat Angelo to be the 184 lber and he could beat Gabe and PK to be the 174 so that is where he went? Maybe he is the 174 and Angelo will be the 184 in March and Iowa will still have the best guy at each of those weights on the mat. Isn't that what you are looking for anyway? If Gabe doesn't make the lineup this year that says a lot more about the strength of Iowa's lineup than it does about Gabe. His time is coming, just maybe not this year. He will have his chance at the SS to win the spot he wants.

Exactly. and Nelson didn't come back for an extra year to wrestle at his non optimal weight, especially if he is beating Gabe and PK. If Gabe can't beat Nelson, I'm sure he doesn't just want the spot handed to him either. He will probably either take 184 or look to earn 174 back at SS. We actually have a good problem here.

So we're complaining about Brands not wrestling his non-optimal weight for the team, when he literally spent the majority of his career wrestling his non-optimal weight for the team. Got it

Not at all, but he stayed at Iowa and bumped up for the team. Pretending like he isn't a team guy or Iowa is wrong for letting him choose his weight if he earns the starting spot, or only letting him because he is a Brands is baffling.
Lost in all of this is Iowa hasn't had a true 184 for a relatively long time.
Let's pretend for the moment that Nelson is the best 174 pounder. Is moving up what's best for him? Is it what's best for the team?

This season is going to be GREAT and we have the best team we have had since we won it in 2020 and 2021!
