2017 guard Austin Ash gets preferred walkon offer.

This kid is really good. I am sure he will get some low mid major or perhaps D II offers. Hopes he comes to Iowa because he would help the team over his career.

OMG the kid is 2 years younger than my grandsons  old age...

obviously one doesn't expect these "preferred walk-ons" to pan out like Nicholas Baer but you never know I guess.

what Fran has started is a walkon pipeline for Iowa HS kids..which probably benefits them (maybe) more than Iowa in that they get treated like a scholarship player with all the benefits of training table (meals), strength & conditioning coaches & D1 coaching (with all that comes with it including practices)... as well as the experiences of traveling with the team.

Even if the walk-on would chose to transfer to another college after their time with Fran & Iowa ( after a year or whatever) ..its a great way to begin you college career at a B1G program. One thing is for sure when they do leave...they will be a much better player.

There are a number of Iowa high school kids who would love the opportunity to experience the life of being a Hawkeye (even if for a year) and Fran has made it a reality. This has had an impact on Iowa high school coaches in working with their kids.

The relationship between the Iowa BB staff & Iowa high schools is like night & day...compared to 7 years ago.

Release is really really low... He'd get that dhizzle blocked in college. But, more walk ons is good.

As I stated, that video is over a year old. He's grown and gotten stronger since then. Shot will be quicker and released higher as kids get stronger.

I've never seen a video where a guy took less than 5 dribbles the entire highlight video.

He actually took one dribble until about 30 seconds left. I'm sure he's a good kid and this is simply a dream come true for him to get to be a part of the team.

So instead of shooting the open jumper, you'd rather see him dribble and allow defenders to close out, or drive into traffic?

He's not the PG on that AAU team, he spaces the floor and does it well.

Ok dad. I think you missed the point.

Most highlight videos showcase an ATHLETE in multiple facets of the game.

This one doesn't show ANYTHING but spot up push shots. Like i said, there were only about 5 total dribbles in the entire highlight video which is very odd and have never seen that.

It was very underwhelming to say the least.

I'm sure he is a good kid and a nice HS player and that's likely why Fran is letting him walk on. Fran and his family knows the kid and he knows they need fodder for practice that don't make waves. Good for him

You don't typically expect kids who are walking on to jump off the screen in a highlight tape. Usually walk-ons are either undersized or have limited athletic ability, meaning that he probably chose to follow his dream at Iowa over a bunch of D2 offers.

And I'm sure Fran knows lots of kids around Iowa high school basketball. He wouldn't have offered Ash a preferred walk-on unless he felt that Austin could contribute to the team.

Not a Mt. Vernon boy, though. Should have gone to CR Jeff, but travels to Mt. Vernon instead, to attend school. Great kid and loves to play the game. Tremendous spot-up shooter, but lacks the athleticism for this level. He's a gym rat and will work hard every day in practice. He will be an asset to the Hawks in whatever role he serves.

I thought he did quite well in the PTL where he was more of a distributor. Just the kind of player that is good to have on any team.

There wasnt anything to jump off the screen. No "jumping"....or dribbling or even running on that highlight video. Just 2 minutes of push shots.

I'm not criticizing the kids ability but the highlight videos lack of....well, highlights.

Never seen a highlight video like that before. 5 total dribbles. All spot up push shots. Just odd.

Oh well. Moving on.

Thank God but about 2 days too late.

Mind you that was after his sophomore year....he has grown nearly 4" and gotten stronger since then.

yeah he looked like he was 12 years old in that clip. he's obviously an average to late maturing kid, which means that when he's 21-22 he'll have caught up and more than likely have become a great asset; for the practice team, coming off the bench or starting... its hard to tell how someone like that will develop when he's finally done growing.

one thing is certain, he loves the hawks and i'm glad he decided to come to iowa.

This is a walk on in Connor's class, correct? Interesting that he is committing before the school year. It'll be interesting to see how he does this year, too. Nothing to bind him to Iowa if he gets scholarship offers.

I'd like to hear from his AAU coaches. He must have the right attitude; if you are going to add to the bottom of the locker room, you want a quality kid.

Maybe you should read what he says about his choice to walk on . First he will red shirt, get up to around 180# that will help him. It is a dream come true for him. Welcome Austin and good luck.... Thanks...

Ok. Great. Can he dribble? Is he athletic? Because my point was, there are less than 5 dribbles in the highlight video. It's all push shots from 3.

I'm glad it's his dream and that he plans to gain some weight by redshirting.

Wow what did kid do pee in your corn flakes? I would say yes he can do everything he needs to do or he would not have gotten the walk-on offer. What is the big deal anyway it is just a walk- on offer? Welcome Austin it will be fun watching you progress. Thanks...

Nothing I was simply pointing out I've never seen a highlight video in my lifetime where a kid took that few of dribbles.

It was easily the worst made highlight video I've ever seen in my life.

I wish the kid the best, but he definitely has some weird shot mechanics there. Obviously he needs a lot of strength and conditioning work as well, but someone needs to fill practice spots I guess. With the logjam at the 1-2 positions, I'm kind of surprised we aren't looking for bigger guys in the 3-5 spots for the preferred walk-on spots honestly.

terrehawk has a point, the video doesn't show much. But that doesn't really matter because Ash is at least two years away from possibly playing and, by then, he will hopefully have filled-out some and improved his game. BTW, it has been a standing pet peeve of mine that highlight videos very rarely include clips of the prospect making a play on defense. Gotta play D in this league.
