2017 Softball Season

I guess time will tell if she made a decision to soon, she just verbally committed. So she didn't sign anything yet. Things may still change . She is a really great kid and from a very good family who is dedicated to softball. I only wish the best for any and all girls I've coached.

You are obviously more tuned-in to softball recruiting than me, I'm just going by football and basketball recruiting. I know recruiting in basketball starts early, just didn't realize it started that early in softball also.

Two tough one-run losses.

Lost to Va. Tech 2-1 after getting the first two runners on in the bottom of the 7th. A double play off a line drive ended the rally. Why wouldn't you bunt in that situation? 1 run keeps you alive and two wins with runners on second and third with one out there are a lot of ways to score the runner from third.

We lost to Ga. Tech 3-2 after surrendering a run in the bottom of the seventh on an infield single and a hard hit ball ruled single that couldn't be played by the Hawks.

Pitching looks to be pretty good still. Need to get the offense going and tighten up the D some.

Man these young ladies are busting their butts trying to get over this hump. We are getting PHENOMENAL pitching right now and we hit the ball hard this last game they just made some great plays.

There were 3-4 balls to the warning track and a couple line drives the CF made good plays on. I'm hoping once we are able to win a game and get over the hump the wins will start coming in bunches. Sometime it just takes that first win in a close game to mentally know you can win the close ones.

I'm hoping for the same thing Synergy. The team is playing hard and has had a chance to win every gm so far but we have to break through soon.

Ugh - These are the Lickliter years of Iowa softball. At least the Lickliter era mercifully ended after 'only' three seasons.

Another 1 run loss. Hawks just can't find a way to breakthrough. A weekend off and then a very tough tournament in California. 2-7. Might not see another win until Kansas. Hope the girls keep their spirits up. They're right there.

That's the main thing Synergy, they HAVE to keep believing in themselves. Have a week to hopefully get some things straightened out before a HUGE test in Cali.

Hold on to your butts!
Weekend opponents:
# 3 Florida
# 8 Washington
#20 Arizona St.
#23 California
10-6 Fresno State
Hopefully they can just come in with the attitude to have fun and hit the ball hard!

Rugged tournament, I would guess the main reason we're there is to keep the program somewhat visible to the Cali kids. Otherwise I don't see the point of getting beat up out there.

No Schmiederer today, Rozier caught the first and Cantu the second.

I know this is a tough tourney with the teams we play but I am afraid we are in for another long year. Hope things get better when the B10 starts but there are some seriously good teams in the B10 too.

Bad start with Losses to Fresno and Of course Florida. They were in the Fresno game just couldnt shut the door. New day today.

It was going to be difficult to avoid being the punching bag in this tournament, but next week at Kansas will be opportunities for wins vs. Drake, UMKC and Kansas. Not gimme's by any means, but do-able.

Drake is tough.. I would not be surprised if they beat Iowa. Not sure about Kansas and UMKC.

Drake is 14-8 on the year and according to their roster they only have 3 Iowa girls on the team. Does anyone know if they are getting criticized for not having more Iowa girls on the team? Or maybe this is just an odd year for them, just curious.

They beat Stanford yesterday so they're doing something right.
Kansas is bad but they're at home. UMKC is really bad.

Next week we get to see the 257th best offense vs the 282nd best offense. (IA vs Creighton). http://www.ncaa.com/stats/softball/d1/current/team/281/p6

I'm predicting a pitcher's dual.

Agree Drake is tough. Sounds like they found a good #2 pitcher, which I thought had been their only weakness. We actually beat them last year though, along with UNI. I would have put serious money against that happening ;)

When you are out side of Iowa, Most people could not tell you where Drake is. So i never really think of them like I do the Hawkeyes. But in looking at the D1 rosters in the state, ISU has 6 Iowa Girls, Northern Iowa had 8, Drake 3 and Iowa 5, Funny, if you look at Minnesota they have 7 Minnesota girls and 3 Iowa Girls. Drake also has a really good pitcher coming in next year in Nicole Timmons from Dav Assumption.

Batting average now 283rd out of 291 NCAA teams.
The only two Hawkeyes batting .300 aren't Hawkeyes anymore.
Sammi Gyerman - .333
Alyssa Navarro - .304

Maybe get back on the winning track this weekend against some bad teams, but snow is in the forecast. No breaks for the Hawks this year.

Tough break that the two UMKC games were canceled. Think I'm going to pray for rain in Columbia Wednesday (although we did beat the Tigers in 2014).

I am all-in as a Hawkeye fan. My wife says I would make a point to watch Iowa even if it was a battle between the 13th and 14th placed conference chess teams, assuming it included Iowa. Being an old dude, I remember well back into the Blevin years. Frankly, I thought the game was moving beyond her "small ball" mentality. Her teams routinely won, 2-0, 1-0 and in wild game 4-2! Blevins always had great pitching and half their wins were shoutouts. Hitting was then improving to a point where pitching and defense was not going to make it (IMHO). I had high hopes for Looper, who with a measure of courage, stepped forward during a difficult time. Still, years have gone by and things are not going well. It is hard to see a once very proud softball program fall to these depths. Maybe, enough time has passed to attract a coach that can succeed in the won/loss column. (I have no idea what success has been maintained in the classroom or with the way the team represents the university). Looper may stay because, frankly, I don't think the current Athletic Director cares far too little about the non-high profile teams. If Looper stays, i will continue to check in for progress, but my expectations are low. (Special thanks to the handful of regular contributors who comment on softball. BTW, cranko(whatever), my daughter now lives in JCMO... you live there right? Glad she is a Hawkeye, as I recall she had real options!)

Hi r448, from my view the team is a great bunch of kids despite the W/L records leaving much to be desired. Crankermo reports that his daughter is happy as a Hawk and that the team is treated well by the coaching staff. Not all SB programs are happy places. If you have interest in softball, check out the Ultimate College Softball website here: http://robocoach.websitetoolbox.com/?forum=10114

Fun to read about the successful programs, but also sort of fascinating to read about those in trouble. The Stanford program melted down a few years ago, and one of our B10 partners (MSU) had an incident where a coach allegedly beaned a player in practice after the player made unflattering remarks about the program in the media. Our opponent this week (Missouri) had its two best pitchers transfer out at the end of last season claiming poor treatment from the head coach, who was subsequently investigated. If I'm remembering correctly, the previous Wisconsin coach abruptly canceled Senior Day ceremonies at the last second after all of the parents traveled in. UNI has to rent the Cedar Falls High School diamond because their own is so decrepit. So there are other programs with problems.

The current Iowa situation as far as I know is that coach Looper is under contract through the 2018 season. There is some time remaining to get things turned around on the field, but it seems likely at this point her contract will not be renewed. For what it's worth, in 2012 the Hawks got beaten up pretty good in non-conference play (like this year) but then had a pretty good B10 season to finish in 2nd place. There is hope.

My daughter absolutely loves Iowa her team and everything about it. Hopefully we can turn things around.

I completely understand everyone's frustrations because I hate losing more than anyone I know and I know these girls do too.

These are hard working young ladies that try to make Hawks fans proud.

Iowa hung around in game one for a bit, but when the wheels came off the game got out of hand quickly which resulted in a run rule shut out. Doocey threw a great game in the second game, but we could not push any runs across in a 2-0 loss. We had a good opportunity late in the game with a lead off triple, but could not score. We had a few nifty double plays, but we have to find a way to score. Go Hawks!

There have been schedule changes to our home-opening tournament this weekend, first game vs Valpo is now set for 5 PM Friday. Also note that the Creighton game is set for 11 PM Sunday and SDSU for 1 AM, so bring coffee or your stimulant of choice. ;)

I'm wondering if this is the first multi-team tournament we've hosted since our last NCAA appearance under coach Blevins (apart from the Big 4 in the fall).

Good lord 2-16 with 16 straight losses. Looper has destroyed the softball program, how is she still employed?!

Some have speculated that the ongoing legal situations regarding the former field hockey coach and former assistant AD have made Barta cautious about acting against other female coaches. Hence the speculation that Looper's contract will simply be allowed to expire.

Yup, 2-16 is ugly. Of the 16 losses, 6 were one run, 3 were two runs, six were to ranked teams, and 3 win-able games were canceled due to weather. In the latest B10 stats, our pitching and defense were in the middle of the conference, and Starkenburg had a 2.8 ERA. Unfortunately, our team BA was .199 which, along with our runs scored, were both good for 14th. :( But we now have 8 straight home games, perhaps the bats can get going.

The hitters need to hit. Right now we have nobody .300 or over. I haven't checked, but Michigan's entire lineup is probably well over that. On the bight side, we don't play them this season.

Why didn't we get fiser or the CRK pitcher? Fiser' mom said that we didn't even look at her more than a cup of coffee. Wtf?

Hawks finish the Hawkeye tournament with a 4-1 record. All 4 wins were shut outs. The lone loss verses Creighton was in extra innings. All of Creighton's runs were unearned. The pitchers seem to be throwing well right now.

Did Killian get injured? It looked like in the streaming of the Mizzou game she got hurt base running and she hasn't played since.

IMHO, Kurtz is the better defensive 3B, although Killian has the better bat (and can pitch if needed).

I was looking at South Dakota's stats, and the pitcher we beat had an ERA of 2.58 (which would lead us). I had been disappointed because we didn't make much contact, but don't feel so bad now. The tournament worked out well for us, a chance to build momentum and confidence before the conference season starts.
