Heller generates a lot of enthusiasm and confidence in the program, and I am not suggesting it is unwarranted, but given what we lose playerwise to graduation and the pro draft, what does next year look like? Is it middle of the pack or better?
They do have juco catcher, Austin Martin coming in. Not sure how solid he is behind the plate. Tanner Padgett, Izaya Fullard and Zeb Adreon are juco players coming in who are all great hitters. Fullard hit over .490 this year. Korry Howell is another juco that signed, but he’s likely to go pro.
Clayton Nettleton could be a stud on the pitching staff next year.
Losing: Hoeg, Guzzo, Neustrom probably, Cropley and maybe Whelan. Losing Nelsen from the pitching staff, and possibly Daniels, Allgeyer, McDonald and Schanuel.
Could be a solid team if the pitching staff sticks around and the juco players hit like they have the past couple years.
Possible lineup
1B-Padgett
2B-Boe
SS-Crowl
3B-Elion/Fullard
LF-Whelan
CF-Jenkins/Norman
RF-Adreon
C-Martin
DH-?
I also wonder about Henry Marchese. If he gets pushed down too far on the WR depth chart, maybe he will join the baseball team?
I don't have any inside info, but I noticed that Padgett was out most of the year. Injury maybe?
Adreon could go RF or 1B. If the latter, then there could be room for Norman and Jenkins in the OF if Whelan stays. They just need a little more pop in a line-up than what Norman, Jenkins, & Boe provide.
Fullard is an amazing hitter, but he will not unseat Elion from 3B defensively. I'd guess Fullard will be a DH or possibly a 2B option.
It'll be interesting to see what direction Judkins goes. Given the way he was used the second half of the season, it is likely that he will be a pitcher only.
This will be my first off season of really following Iowa recruiting and the draft. I’m interested to see who goes and who stays. When do players have to decide if they are going pro or not?
Will McCaffery be a part of the team?
Rotation could be McDonald, Dreyer, and ?
I think Schanuel will get drafted and go. If the walks continue he won't last long. He has the tools though.
I think we would be fine without Brady, when he’s on he’s really good, but he was too inconsistent. I think he will go, too. Hopefully, Allgeyer will stick around. Allgeyer, McDonald, Dreyer, would be a solid rotation. Wallace or maybe Nettleton starting midweek games.
Allgeyer is a RS Jr and ranked the #455 prospect. He will go too imo. Wallace has showing potential in the Mizzou game prior to injury. What about Liurance?
IMO, Fullard isn't quite athletic enough defensively and doesn't have quite enough arm for a P5 third baseman. 2B is a better home for him defensively.I kind of thought Eliot was a defensive liability.
Memory tells me mid-July following the draft. Used to be August but I think it’s earlier now.
That is the one down side to college baseball. Most of the time your good players aren't around very long. They don't even necessarily need to be great.I’d say yes.
