2019 Flo Big Board

IMO 2019 is a weak class overall compared to the last few classes. A lot of 285's and the top ten doesn't really blow you away after McHenry. If I was Brands I would make darn sure I get the right 149 out of this class as I don't see Sasso happening. Then just save the money for the 2020 class because we could land a real good class led by instate kids Schriever and Happel. Get a few national elites with them and #1 class.

I like Reeves but not sure isn't 133 at the wrong time for Iowa. esp if Millidge is a year ahead.

Heres Cael Happel vs the #7 ranked 113 lber in the nation Aden Reeves.

I know it's just practice matches, but Happel still looked pretty good IMO.

I wouldn't put much stock into the Bennett match. He has 2 years on Cael and first tournament of the year. He's a whole weight class bigger then Cael. If Teske wasn't at 120 I'm sure Bennnett would've been there

But then again Happel Is only a 1A wrestler:eek:

I don't understand. You claim he's a weight class bigger, even though they both made 113, because you assume he'd be 120 if not for Teske? Even if true, which I'm skeptical because he's not long removed from 103, he still made the weight.

I'm not claiming he can't develop into a top tier recruit but at this point I remain skeptical when he looks to lag behind Bennett and Biscoglia, who aren't exactly blue chip elite prospects.

Perhaps he was wrestling a high quality wrestler, 2 years his senior, but that never bothered Teske his freshman year.

From my perspective of their match, Cael appeared bigger than Bennett.

Kid is just going into his sophomore year, has a Dad that was a Hawk, and a brother that is a current Hawk in the running for a spot. He has two losses...one to a tough kid in Bennett and another to a stud from Mizzou..both in the same tourney. I think he is going to be just fine.

He passes the eye test for me

It's not incumbent of me to educate you about weight differences and perceptions.

I didn't follow Teskes freshmen year, therefore I'm not sure if Teske wrestled anyone the caliper of Bennet in his first HS tournament.

I'm not worried about Cael's college prospects or his ranking in various websites. As you are comparing a 9th grader in Dec to Bennet and Biscoglia with couple years of HS wrestling under their belts.

I'll stick w Cael potential over what I've seen from Bennet or Biscoglia

Someone who's never even seen him wrestle in person. That's who you gotta trust! Just like that car ya bought that turned out to have No engine under the hood.

You know what means absolutely nothing in how to evaluate a recruit? What they did their freshman year of high school. All that matters is the level they're at their junior and senior year.

That would be a strawman.

The issue was never the future of Bennett and Biscoglia, it's specifically whether Happel will be an elite prospect, i.e. top 20 p4p in his class. I never said I didn't want him in the program. I'm speaking specifically to original point about steering scholarship money and holding back on '19 money to pursue Happel.

Certainly freshman year accomplishments aren't the end all benchmark, but it's all we have to evaluate with at the present.

The current state of our program dictates that a likely 4 time champ, Teske, is only worth .5 scholarship by Iowa, then why is it unreasonable to question how much should be allocated to Happel and how we should approach the '19 recruiting class preceding them?

I see 0.5 scholarship as a strong offer for Teske (if that was truly his offer), not 'only 0.5'.

I think it's an appropriate offer but my point is that Teske is easily the #1 prospect in his class instate and just outside the elite prospects nationally.

I wouldn't advise banking scholarship money from our prior recruiting class to compete better for Teske, and I'm applying the same logic to Happel at the moment.

Teske beat returning runner up Justin Portillo (Jr) out the gate 6-4, Portillo went on to win state the next two years.

Happel wasn't really competitive in the match with Bennett, got beat by Severado who ended up at 106 and was pinned by Pritchard. The kid is good but I think people need to pump the breaks, would we be hyping him up if he placed 3-4th at state because that was probably his ceiling in 3A and 2A.
