NOTE that Michigan is now in the mix (has not offered yet).

As you will read, Tarris has watched film on Tyler Cook to see how he might fit into Iowa's system.

The FREE Story:

Tarris has 11 offers, including
Iowa
Michigan State
Ohio State
Nebraska
Florida
Creighton
Missouri
Kansas State
St Louis
Xavier
UMKC

Hopefully he meant Tyler's offensive film.

1 scholly off the board @Franisdaman, one remaining. What’re we thinking, is Fran going to count on another departure following this season or next and take a SG/SF(Nickel or Kramer) plus accept a commitment from a Dasonte Bowen? I kind of feel like we need a PG in this class with Toussaint being a senior and Ulis a junior when they would be coming in... but I really want to get Nickel

I think we have a real good shot at Dasonte Bowen (6'3", 170), the PG out of Worcester, MA.

For 2021, right now we only have Payton coming in, so we have one scholarship carrying over to use for 2022; it would ice to land Tyler Nickel, for sure

Unless we bring in a grad transfer next year... though I’m starting to wonder if Fran isn’t going to just roll with Nunge and Big O at the 5, while mixing in some small ball with Keegan depending on the matchup

yeah, the transfer portal makes things interesting when it comes to roster management, that's for sure

Everybody rags on Josh, but we have not seen much of him to make any judgments, imo. It was interesting when he was brought in to defend Cochburn; Kofi tried to drive on Josh, but Kofi could not move the big fella; Josh held his ground.

How many scholarships do we have in the 22 class?

We currently have 2 scholarships left for the 2022 class.

Reminder: in Men's basketball, you can have 13 on scholarship.

ONE THING TO MONITOR: due to covid-19, 2020-2021 was considered a "free year" by the NCAA. So, anyone listed below as JUNIORS or SENIORS could potentially play/graduate a year later than CURRENTLY expected.

CURRENT 2022-2023 ROSTER (11 on Scholarship):

FRESHMEN: 1 player

6'11" C Riley Mulvey (***)

SOPHOMORES: 1 player

6'7" F Payton Sandfort (***)

JUNIORS: 6 players

6'11" C Josh Ogundele (***)

6'4" G Tony Perkins (***)

6'2" G Ahron Ulis (***)

6'8" F Keegan Murray (Not Rated)

6'8" F Kris Murray (Not Rated)

6'9" SF Patrick McCaffery (****); on May 29, 2020, Patrick received approval for a medical hardship after playing in just 2 games in the 2019-2020 season, giving him 4 years of college eligibility (through 2024).

SENIORS: 3 players

6'4" SG CJ Fredrick (***); in early Nov, 2018, was decided CJ would redshirt the 2018-2019 season

5'10" PG Joe Toussaint (***)

6'11" F Jack Nunge (***); in his freshman year (2017-2018) he played in 33 games and averaged 5.7 ppg; in early Nov, 2018, was decided Jack would redshirt the 2018-2019 season. In the 2019-2020 season, he appeared in only 6 games before tearing his ACL in a game vs Cal Poly. On May 12, 2020, Jack was granted another year of eligibility (medical hardship waiver).

Riley has 4 offers, including:
IOWA
Syracuse
UMass
Siena

Of these 4, he has only visited Iowa (on 10/13/19).

Which programs are in the mix heavily?

Mulvey: “Iowa, Syracuse, Yale, Kansas, Iona, and Providence have contacted me recently.”

What are your thoughts on Syracuse?

Mulvey: “Well Coach McNamara and Coach Autry have been contacting me often. The coaches say that they play the ball through the big men which I can compliment very well due to the way I play.”

How about Iowa, you’ve visited and they have already offered.

Mulvey: “For Iowa, Coach [Fran] McCaffery has compared me to Luka [Garza] and says that I’d be a big that runs the floor for them and get a ton of offensive boards.”

The FULL STORY is here:

This is a 13 minute interview from Feb 11

Looks like he is done in 21. So what are the best guesses for 22?

It sounds like Bowen is a high priority at point guard, gets calls from all of Iowa's coaches weekly. He is 6' 3" with length. King from Minnesota at PG, but maybe a better safety prospect.

I really like Nickel or Schutt, both can fill it beyond the arc. Nickel at 6'7" is more of a Wieskamp clone. Schutt is a SG at 6'5" tall but would be a taller version of Fredrick. Either would be great gets but pulling Nickel away from Virginia will be tough. Same can be said about pulling Schutt away from Illinois. With Iowa's offensive style, either would be a great fit for the Hawks.

If Fran wants to go bigger does he try to get Hurlburt from North Dakota or Filipowski from out East.

Two more schollies for 22, will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

As I stated above, for the 2022-2023 roster, there are 2 open scholarships.

Also, as I stated in the posts above, I think we have a real good shot at Dasonte Bowen (6'3", 170), the PG out of Worcester, MA.

It would be nice to land Tyler Nickel, for sure. Iowa has been working him hard.

I still think he tries to get a grad transfer post-player for 2021-22.

Mulvey is a 22' isn't he?

Yes, Mulvey is a 2022 prospect.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the transfer portal. As I stated above, right now this is where things stand for 2022-2023:

This kid: Kyle Filipowski (Offered June 18)
PF, 6'9", 215, Wilbraham, MA

Seems like he has had great things to say about Fran.....does getting Mulvey actually have an effect on taking him?

If they don't get Tyler Nickel, I would imagine Kyle is in the running

who would you like to see Iowa use the final 2 scholarships on?

Well likely have 1-2 leave from now until then as well.. there are definitely options. Would like him to grab a MN kid to get a pipeline going as the talent pool is deep!

With the 2 schollies currently available, who do you prefer?

For me, its the PG Dasonte Bowen & the forward Tyler Nickel.

And, as you can see in the orig post, we have offered several Minnesota kids.

Trejuan Holloman
PG, 6'2", St. Paul, MN

Prince Aligbe
SF, 6'5", 185, Minneapolis, MN

Camden Heide
SF, 6'5", 175, Wayzata, MN

Eli King (Offered June 23)
PG, 6'1", 160, Caledonia, MN

Ahjany Lee (Offered August 3)
PF, 6'8", 195 Byron, MN

D. Watson-Saulsberry (Offered Sep 29)
SF, 6'7", 190, Minneapolis, MN

I think Kyle might be the most talented and provide us with a big/tall PF that is athletic...and then probably Bowen as he appears to be the most dynamic PG that we have been seriously involved with (not counting Suggs), but I find that Eli King to be a very intriguing prospect as well. I would love to see us establish inroads to the Minnesota talent.

Iowa has offered 6 kids from the state of Minnesota. It is crazy how much talent is in that state.

Good summary. It will be interesting if Iowa has any transfers out that change the scholarship numbers. PG will be a need as Joe T will be a senior and Ulis a JR when 2022 season starts. Bowen's tape is impressive, he has natural ability to get to and finish around the rim. Iowa also will need a guard or wing who can shoot from the perimeter since Iowa's top three point shooters will be gone in 2 years in JBo, Wieskamp, and CJ.

Tarris Reed is an interesting name. 4 star PF out of the same St Louis high school as Tyler Cook. His offer list is impressive so it may be a longshot for Iowa. But it seems Iowa might be content with two bigs in one class so we'll see what Fran does. Absolute huge recruiting opportunity after this season.

As you might have seen in this thread last October, Tarris Reed (C, 6'8", 220, St Louis, MO) was offered Oct 14. As many noted back then, its cool to see that Tyler Cook connection.

We have been discussing PG Dasonte Bowen, too, ever since he was offered; he would be a nice pick up, imo.

A lot of things can happen but here are where things currently stand:

Need to get Nickel. I think Mulvey is a bit more in the mold of a stretch 4, so probably need to go in the direction of a true center. I’m thinking Shaver when saying this. If we do close with one more guy, I hope for either Tarris Reed, Demarion Watson, or Aidan Shaw.

As I have pointed out above, we have 2 scholarships available

we are definitely in the running for Tyler Nickel

As you know, Will Shaver (C, 6'10, 245, Birmingham, AL) was a recent offer (offered Dec 21) & he seemed happy about it.

I think we need the PG Dasonte Bowen

Pending mass exodus within the conference too at Penn State

John Harrar would be the type Iowa should be looking for as a grad transfer with Nunge's health question and Ogundele's development/questions about extended minutes. You know what he brings. He'll stay in the post the whole time and provide a quality minutes.

now that he's in the portal, Iowa can contact Harrar, correct?

As of this morning, it sounds like MSU, Rutgers, and Maryland were the only teams to reach out from the Big Ten. I’m not convinced that Fran wants to hit the portal

it will be interesting to see what/if anything Fran does w/ the ONE scholarship that is currently available for next season

Only one scholarship for a graduate transfer assuming the McCaffery boys stay on scholarship, right? It seems like there would be flexibility there to add more than one.
