2022 Recruiting (1 Scholarship Left): Jaxon Kohler & Josh Dix VISITED Sep3, Tyler Nickel Sep17. Aidan Shaw VISITED Jun23. Kyle Filipowski to Duke

It occurs to me that maybe Fran won't grab a Center from the portal out of his respect for Nunge. Jack has had a really tough year and if he is rehabbing hard with the idea of coming back to be the starting Center, maybe Fran doesn't want to put another roadblock in front of him and is content to just go with Josh O and Jack. Maybe feels he can get Big O ready to play 10 to 20 minutes per game. Also Iowa is in the ncaa tourney and maybe nothing happens until they are done playing.

This upcoming season would be the best time for Fran to flex the ability to move one of his kids to walk on status. Connor has just finished his 4th season in the program. He’d be a prime candidate to move to walk on since he’s already had 4 years of scholarship. That way we can talk a young guard that we aren’t relying upon next year as well as a grad transfer big man to fill the Garza gap on the roster. That doesn’t hurt us with roster flexibility moving forward.

We absolutely can’t afford to take a big step backwards next season or we run the risk of losing our momentum that has been established these last two seasons.

I understand that sentiment, but we need a 3rd big that can provide C and PF minutes in case of injuries or foul trouble. Doesn’t need to be a starter. Someone like Kreiner would be awesome next year.

A transfer center would be for 1 year. Jack is a stretch 4 playing the 5 out of necessity. I don't think he would be upset if we got someone to take Luka's spot (not Luka minutes) and Jack would be backup to the 4 and/or 5 spot. I would think he might welcome it as a load off of him and to help the team win. Now Josh is another story

I think that there is some credibility to this thought....it is a concern.....I think that a program builds momentum and I think that this year, Iowa clearly has it with being a top 10 ranked team almost the entire season, lots of good TV exposure, lots of good Luka exposure, etc etc......I also see the concern that Hooper is mentioning about Jack....

So the dilemma for me is.....how do you convince a post player with 1 year of college left, to agree to play second fiddle in the post? How do you recruit over a kid like Jack, who is immensely talented-tall and athletic, who has suffered so much and been so loyal? It's a tough situation...so you start to think about maybe a freshman center that could play backup and provide some depth.....and yet you just got a commit from a post player that you will bring in two years from now....unless you screw that up by bringing in a freshman this year....hmmm

Imo you bring in the best possible recruits you can for the positions of need. Then play the best players you have regardless of class. In the end it's about winning games and running a clean program. If Jack has to come off the bench, so be it.

I don't disagree....maybe a just slightly different perspective....in the long run, how you treat players in your program will have an effect on winning/success.....it's not a simple answer. That said, you could be right and Fran may treat it exactly that way.

Based on injury status alone we do not presently know if Jack Nunge will ever contribute another quality minute of basketball for Iowa. I don't think Iowa can afford to go into the season betting that Jack will recover from his injury and improve his game sufficiently to be a quality starter. Indeed, the injury makes the game improvement less likely because physical rehab time is not the same player development time and there are only so many hours in the day.

Jack definitely needs to talk to Monika about getting some 1950s era George Mikan knee pads.

I don’t typically listen to the WUW podcast, but I did listen to the one with Polasek and he said something pretty interesting on this subject. He talked about how the coaches were open with the players on the team that they were constantly trying to recruit their replacements and that the players understood that.

I’m sure some players handle that better than others, but I suppose any D1 athlete realizes that it is up to them to earn their role and that the coaches have a job to bring in better talent and continue to improve the team each year.

He's on the Jess Settles plan :(

If Jack has a real good year next year being he'll graduate before next year he could and likely will move on I would assume?
You could be right, not heard that before. Listen to some around here and he might hang it up before next season.

Only one scholarship for a graduate transfer assuming the McCaffery boys stay on scholarship, right? It seems like there would be flexibility there to add more than one.
not sure Fran would take anyone off scholarship but who knows

will everybody stay is another question. there is lots of uncertainty with Weezy being around for another season, for example

so, we might have more than 1 scholarship open when its all said & done

Good post. I think it depends what Fran and staff are seeing from Josh. The kid certainly looks the part with his frame and if he makes modest strides in his post game and conditioning, he should be able to contribute. The flip side is that with Nunge's history of knee issues you almost need some insurance and the portal may provide that.

A case could be made that both Murray kids will put on 10 pounds of muscle and grow into their frames so one / both could play as a somewhat undersized post but not optimal. Lots of talent out there and not all the kids in the portal are expecting to be "the guy". In Fran's system there is plenty of PT to go around, so not being a starter doesn't mean you are going to be buried on the bench.

You lay out the question well. I will say even if Nunge is healthy and Ogundele shows progress, it won't necessarily show any disloyalty to Nunge because he would still get increased minutes next year. Not quite Garza minutes, but if Iowa brings in a grad transfer center like Harrar, then Iowa could use both Nunge and Harrar on the floor together in advantageous matchups. Nunge is a good athlete and he'll be a more consistent shooter to be able to stretch the floor while Harrar/unknown grad transfer center keeps his body under the basket.

i wonder if Joe/Weezy knows what he is doing yet; we might have 2 openings :(

I agree with what you are saying here. We're getting more national exposure then we have in a long time. Fingers crossed we have the type of Tourney run we are hoping for, and gain even more momentum. It might make sense to pull one or both McCaffery scholarships, if the right transfers/players want to join us for 2021-22, or for the following class (in which case it would be Patrick's ride).

Connor has only had 3 scholarship years though. His freshman season they did use him as a walk-on.

Jack has 2 years left
Because of the pandemic, Jack gets another year if he wants it. I seriously doubt he will unless he suddenly feels great at the end of year 6 and he knows that playing another year could help his NBA chances. He also might want an extra year of scholarship since he would probably be close to a medical degree by then.
:)

He's redshirted all of one year and was hurt most of 2 more. He probably won't return for the 6th but you never know. Do we know he's planning on returning next season?

Weezy will certainly be gone based on what Kakert and TOS has said...and that's the right move for him. Seniors simply don't raise their stock too often.

Assuming you’re not being sarcastic, and I don’t think you are, it is in reference to any other Hawkeye site.

It’s a bit outdated, because the competing sites don’t get in a bunch about people talking about info from another site anymore. You used to not even be able to mention Hawkeyenation on Hawkeyereport, and vice versa. So, people would say they saw something on TOS when referencing something they saw on “The other site.”

I didn’t know this either so thanks for clarifying

Jack was playing very well before he got hurt. Fran is extremely loyal to his players. I wouldn‘t be surprised if he told Nunge he will have the starting job next year as long as he is healthy. That allows him to bring someone in and not cause friction. Which, given Jack’s health problems, would be wise.
