**************2024 All Class High School Football Thread***************

Was wondering because my grandkids play them in WAMAC and they swamp everyone in enrollment outside of Marion.

Yeah, their junior high has moved into the CRANDIC conference which are feeder schools for Liberty, City, West, Prairie, Linn-Mar, Xavier and the CR president schools.

I'm curious what they will do because in sports like basketball it has become a split conference of Linn-Mar's 2 junior highs, the Iowa City Schools, Prairie and maybe Regis/LaSalle in one division and the CR schools all in another. That has helped having bigger programs play eachother and smaller programs play each other. That has also helped (a bit) in not having TOTAL lopsided scores. I'm curious where CCA will fit in that dynamic.

CCA has some other issues with athletics and non athletics as well.

Really don't want to get into specifics, but if you're familiar with what happened with Waverly in the Northeast Iowa Conference, you'll get "my drift".
There are some rumblings amongst other WAMAC schools about CCA.

Oh I'm sure. Our kids make fun of the "cowboy" culture at CCA. We have had a few kids transfer to Liberty for that reason. Waverly had a lot of things going against them.

Waverly was also set to join the MVC a few years ago then tried to only join specific sports (magically ones they were really good at) and that always rubbed me the wrong way.

Ignore the commentary from our student account but here's the interception that wasn't called. SEP had a long TD on the next play. There were lots of other things that could have happened during the game but it really hurt bad at that point of the game.

The refs were terrible all game. In the first half, the 2nd & 3rd touchdowns for IC should have been called back for blatant holding. A defender should have been ejected for targeting. Second half the “non-int” a face mask being missed. There were a ton of terrible calls favoring IC first half and SEP in second.
Both teams deserved better.

To be fair, that video doesn't confirm an int. It shows the player grabs the ball before it hits the ground and then ends. It doesnt show what happens immediately after, like did he maintain control of it.

Not that i care either way, just saying.

The catch wasn't in question as he came up clean with it on replay in the stadium. They called it incomplete because of the bobble. I think the refs thought it bounced off the ground.

Edit to clarify- the replay in the dome was not the one shown on the clip. The replay in the dome is what showed he caught it.

Yeah, there was one play that our QB was running around and slung a ball over the middle for a long gain. We had 2 lineman 10 yards (at least) down field.

There were 2 obvious face masks not called against SEP. One twisting the head of our rb.

Like you said. Bad on both sides.... really bad.

This sounds like the reason they read that sportsmanship crap at the beginning of so many events...
Basically saying there is a great chance officials will determine the winner because of bad/missed calls and fans shouldn't point out the errors!

The "Old Boy Network" alive and well.

Nah, any missed calls against SE Polk were deserved and correct.

We really need new blood officiating for all sports across the board. 1/3 are doing well and can keep up with the play... for the most part. 1/3 are still trying their best but on the verge of retirement. 1/3 are trying (I'm giving the benefit of the doubt) but struggle pretty bad or are terribly out of shape (basketball and soccer come to mind).

Hard to find people to do it. I have run the sticks at a handful of games the last few years and will talk to the line judge a bit. They need to have a flexible job that allows them to take off early Friday, and Monday as well if they want to do a JV game; that or use a vacation day. All to travel to a game within an hour to make little money and get yelled at all game.

Not my idea of a fun Friday night.

I'm guessing there are times they absolutely dread traveling to some games once they get the schedule. Most sidelines are handled pretty well, but there are a few teams and staffs that are an absolute nightmare.

So fire those staffs and players and fans and replace all those people with better ones.........

Definitely fire the fans.
I ref soccer but at same time I’m not above calling a ref out. It is their job to make a safe and fair playing environment, that is a problem. A ref not calling targeting or blatant red card puts players at risk.
When it’s a borderline play, fans need to sit down and shut up when they couldn’t do any better. Now at the same time basketball refs who call fouls “because is gotta be a foul, right? “ Even though three people blocking view and half a court away also need to be educated.

Oh I'm sure and I totally get it. Even harder in smaller communities. There are also times where you have no idea if there is an admin on site or not. Much, much worse in the junior high... officiating and admin.

What part of the state do you ref in?

Disappointing effort from SE Polk, not letting an eastern Iowa team get a chance to win a state title. Very disappointing. They should be ashamed, really.
Des Moines metro football & nothing else in Iowa.

This is like 15-20 years straight now right??!

Eastern Iowa will never be able to compete with the city ever again.

It’s hilarious though!

Freaking Champions! Thanks @Easthawk1062 and @RVHAWKXX

My son was named the Hog of the game. Pretty proud of him.

Yeah, 22 is a tough kid. Used to ride bulls. He’s going to try and play somewhere, NAIA or DIII. He’s getting some DII interest.

Our team got a message from Cooper DeJean, which was super cool. His cousin is our Center.
OL/DL coach so love the Hog of the game award. Also #62 is probably the best football number ever. Congrats again!

A lot of massacres in the Finals this year........

Dub. Wahlert is currently taking a shiny brown turd on Humboldt, 35-7, in the 2nd half, which you just hate to see.........

Just an embarrassing job by the official in the VHS/SEP game. McGregory was clearly in on that 3rd down pass play. He's standing right there; how do you miss that?

The "Old Boy Network" alive and well.

Can’t find enough refs/umpires at any level. I started reffing youth soccer with my 14 year old to help get him an income stream that can help align with his schedule.

I am inundated with emails each week just to try and get one ref for tons of games each week for locations all over the state.

One of my son’s 14 year old teammates got offered by some organization in Florida to be flown down there to ref tournaments. We’ve had tournaments in Des Moines where refs were flown in from Virginia,

Every year we have Little League games called because we have no umpires.

They have that message because guys are aging out and there aren’t young officials in the pipeline due to awful parent/fan/player behavior. It’s a nationwide crisis.

What a wild one in 5A.

Valley storms back from down 24-7 in the third to take a 35-24 lead with just over 3 minutes to go in the 4th, and lose 38-35. Great onsides kick by SEP with 1:24 left.

A bit of controversy with the awful missed TD for McGregory at the end of the first half which really hurt VHS.

Congrats to Valley for not winning a State title! :D

SEP put me in the strange position of kinda wanting Valley to win. SEP has won every 5A title, that's ridiculous. The fact they sleepwalked through the entire season then win out is just sad for the state of 5A football.
SEP didn’t sleepwalk through the season, they just were not that good. The senior qb had done nothing but mop up duty before this year. Their top WR and QB from last year are at ISU on scholarship and 4 starting OL graduated. Their coach really developed that team, not same team as loss to Johnston.

Well congrats on their last state title for the next few years. I'm sure their staff won't mind taking a break........... :)

Congratulations to all seven Iowa state champions. There were some really wild games. In 3A, which few posters seem to want to talk about, No. 1 (in the polls) Dubuque Wahlert's #1 ranked 3A defense led the Eagles to their first ever football state championship over a talented Humboldt team (that was ranked first in the 3A RPI), 49-14, a score tied for the most points ever scored in a 3A championship game. Congrats to Eagle's Coach Jamie Marshall and his staff. Wahlert's coach prior to Marshall was Travis Zajac, who just won his third straight 1A championship with Grundy Center. Hats off to all these kids who worked so hard to reach their goal!
