The season is right around the corner and the lineup is still in flux but here is an early look at what it might look like. Also expectations for the season.
What would a good season like for you? What about a disappointing season?

Over the moon if Franek or Caliendo shock the world at tough-ass weights. Same if Drake comes back 100% and lays down the law.

Disappointing if no one makes the finals.

Consolation if PSU has 0 champs.

That would be better than just “good.”

We did recruit to replace him. We just failed.
Im on the side of a good year is an ncaa team championship at Iowa, second place is okay and everything else is pfft. I dont care how they get there but with the suspensions, we are going to need a breakout season by alot of guys.

I dont remember, who did we recruit for 97?

7 in the semis, as you suggested, would be amazing. (It isn’t happening.)

At 197, we brought in Kolby Franklin from HS two years ago and this off-season they tried to get Truax.

A good season would be Ayala, Woods, Franek, Caliendo, Kenedy, Arnold and Keuter in the semis at Nattys. It would be nice to see Teske/Schreiver and Voinavich/Rathjen AA. Why didnt we recruit to replace Warnerov?
That would be a GREAT season.

Can Ayala comeback from multiple shoulder injuries and be better than he was 2 years ago? Woods should win a title. Franek is super tough and will be right in the mix. I don't see Caliendo or Kennedy or Arnold top 4 at NCAA's. Each could AA but no guarantees. Keuter will have to jump levels, and I mean several levels, to compete for AA honors.

Teske/Schreier and Voinavich (who I hear is injured)/Rathjen have very outside chances at earning AA.

Voinovich got banged up overseas training for Worlds but it's nothing serious

Someone refresh my memory...was Franklin a high level recruit or just hasn't improved?

he was around the type of recruits Iowa typically gets now. Top 25-50

High level recruit is not the norm anymore. Top 10 p4p at 1 or 2 weights once in a while.
Lol, if once in a while is every single year but 2019, since 2014, you would be correct. However, I do not think that definition fits...Hell, they just recruited the #1 overall p4p in 2022 and 2024, along with the #2 overall in 2023, but don't let the facts get in the way...

Here are the top 10 recruits along with major impact transfers:

2014-Stoll
2015-Kemerer
2016-Marinelli
2017-Lee, Warner, Lugo
2018-Cass, DeSanto
2019- Assad was their highest recruit, ranked in the 20's.
2020-Kennedy, Eierman
2021-Ayala
2022-Chittum, Woods, Teske
2023- Jesuroga, Kueter, Arnold, Franek, Caliendo, Voinovich
2024-Ferrari, Ferrari and maybe even another Ferrari(?)......just don't mention it to Spooner!

I don't think you can count Chittum. He did not step foot on campus, only in the clubs.

Of course you can. Just because he decommited doesn't mean you weren't originally recruited to Iowa. David Taylor was absolutely a recruit for Iowa State, even though he never wrestled for them. Jesuroga was still a commit.

Even then, it was Chittum's dad that blew up that deal, not Cody himself. Remember, this part of the discussion isn't about retention, let alone development or production. It is the fact that Iowa IS ABSOLUTELY getting in on more top 10's than they were the 1st half of Brands tenure and they are doing it with consistency...

2022 our highest recruit was Riggins at 29.
2023 Keuter ended up # 2 or 3 on the final big board. Shapiro and Carrol was in this class.
2024-Currently flo has Angelo #2 and Willie has him #4

I strongly disagree with you. The recruit does not count unless he signs the Letter of Intent and steps foot on campus and in practice. Just because someone says they have a big wanker does not mean they have a big wanker.

You really do just chose to argue with anyone about anything.

Chittum was a commit. You aren't back dooring that for some agenda.
After that, what is your point? At the point they were committed, Chittum and Ferrari were #1's and Kueter was #2, which is EXACTLY what I typed...

Lol, the guy spent a YEAR in the room wrestling at Iowa. You want to say I want to argue about anything? You are the one parsing and jumping on a topic that I am 100% right about.

The poster I responded to said Iowa only lands top 10's "every once in a while". Even with your parsing over Chittum, that is PATENTLY false...

Just correcting you bc you made a wrong statement. You said Iowa had the #1 recruits in 2022 and 2024 along with the #2 in 2023. All three of those are wrong.

Make sure you notify hawkcentral and/or Kueter for their innacurate reporting. MInd you, I said they recruited the #2 in 2023, which is Kueter and you said he was ranked #2. So, how exactly am I wrong on that one....

1.)Chittum- https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/s...-iowa-wrestling-program-hawkeyes/10150107002/

2.) Kueter- https://www.flowrestling.org/articl...reakdown-biggest-targets-in-the-class-of-2025 (SCROLL DOWN TO 285)
This one would probably make it easier for you to admit you are wrong- https://www.flowrestling.org/rankin...d-update-top-seniors-after-their-final-season

3.)Ferrari- https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/s...top-2024-prospect-angelo-ferrari/70266531007/

Again, don't let facts get in the way of your argument....

Middle Ferrari wasn't a top 10 guy and the only reason he'll be an "impact transfer" is because he's bringing his little brother with him.

How does that change anything I typed?.......and I am supposed to be the guy that just likes to argue?

Also, if you read that whole sentence I was using it to transition to the most controversial Ferrari as a chance to egg on Spooner, while actually adding some levity......sheesh!

This also means you are counting guys that transferred in and guys that transferred out. Don’t think we can have it both ways.

When we are ONLY talking about recruiting, of course you can. Retention, development and achievements are completely separate things...

Man, you are really parsing when you exclude 2024, to include 2014, knowing you have Ferrari and dying on the hill over Chittum

Still,

2014-Intermat had Stoll in the top 10 and he finished 11. If you want to "parse" over that spot, feel free. Mind you FLO was just starting to get credit for their rankings at that time and Intermat WAS STILL the top dog.
2018-Cass was actually 13. Again, feel free to parse over 3 spots.
2019-They had NO ROOM. That was the best team they had since 2010 and Lee, DeSanto, Murin, Young, Marinelli, Brands, Warner and Cass all had 2-4 years of eligibility left. Oh, and they also added Eierman..
2022-I love that you ignored my post where I literally pointed to respectable sites showing the commitments, which of course included Chittum!

I went back the last 10 years. 2024 has not happened yet. Angelo could flip. I only count guys enrolled in college at Iowa in the practice room. If they quit after the 1st practice, I would still count them. If they grey shirt and train with the HWC I am not counting them as a recruit. They were recruited but not signed.
I could say the same thing about Kemerer at 9 he is only 2 spots from being outside the top 10.

1/14 in developing these elite recruits into champs, not counting those who haven't wrestled for them yet.

Does Iowa recruit okay? Sure, but they're doing less with more compared with a lot of programs that aren't PSU.

When only saying champ or bust, you are fairly accurate. Although, Cornell is really the only other one than PSU that I would say does a better job creating champions. tOSU has really been the epitome of either full on success or straight up bust with their top guys.

With that said, of those listed above for Iowa, who had the wrestling style that you thought was a guaranteed NCAA Champ coming in? To me, it was only Lee.

2014- Stoll was too limited in movement and wrestled like an old school 285, in an era where fast, athletic 285's were taking over. Mid to high AA was his ceiling and he achieved that.

2015- Kemerer-Although I think he would have a title if he ever stayed healthy, you have to remember he was ranked behind Joseph coming in. He wasn't even the top guy at his weight. Then he had the pleasure of having Nolf at his weight, Hall and then Starocci. All were higher ranked recruits and have proven to be generational talents.

2016- Marinell-Watching Hall manhandle him gave me pause early. I could see he was limited. The guy was the consumate grinder with immeasurable heart. But, his wrestling style was always going to be limited and it showed itself once you had the top 33 in a bracket.

2017- Lee-see above. Warner-You have to remember he was dominating a high school weight class that many consider the least talented weight at that age level. As good as he was, nearly all his offense relied on go behinds and inside knee taps. Once scouted, many of his opponents limited his offense very well. Still, he ALMOST got it done and he became my favorite Hawkeye to ever cheer for.

2018-Cass-He was the #3 285 behind Gable and Parris. Mind you, 1 of them is now an Olympic Champ and the other just won a World Bronze.....

2019-N/A

2020-Kennedy-Insert the description used for Marinelli and you probably wouldn't need to change a single word.

2021-Ayala-He still has quite some time to prove himself. Wrestling as a TF, he looked really good until injured.

2022-Blame Chittum's dad for not being able to assess this class.

2023-Arnold-I will go on record as saying I will be REALLY disappointed if Arnold doesn't win at least 1. Everything about him, his family and his wrestling has me convinced. If Kueter were all in on wrestling only, I would hold him to the same standard. Since he isn't, I don't think it would be fair to assess him on a champ or bust basis.

2024-Ferrari-He is too talented not to win one. Even if you don't like the family, his brother has proven they know how to win. I fully expect at least 1 out of him as well.

So, to be fair, I think we disagree on grading Iowa solely on their prior top recruits not winning it all. But, we do agree that they need to recruit the "right type" of top recruit to get it done. In the past 2 years, I think they have done that with Gabe and Ferrari. These 2 have the skill sets to dictate matches, vs. being limited by the right gameplan.

Let's look back at these guys in a few years and if they haven't won titles, I would agree that the problem goes deeper than what I have thought so far.
