2024 Lineup and Expectation

My friend, I think Levi will have to stumble mightily to not win it all at 57. After another year in the room I think the rest of the field will be long shots.
For me it's Penn State and then about 6 teams you can throw a blanket over and do some blind picking. Depending on who's healthy (i.e., Ayala) and who's banned from NCAAs I think by the end of the year Iowa will have a chance of finishing 2nd but probably 3rd. Like you I think Cornell, if they bring all their weapons will finish 2nd and then teams like Mizz, Mich, VT, NE, and maybe ASU will challenge Iowa for 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. That said, I've got to think TnT will have the team in a position to challenge for 2nd or 3rd and I just don't see them falling past 5th. And FWIW, I still see my man Kennedy making it into the lineup. I don't think a NDSU transfer beats him for a position when all is said and done. Thanks for the comments. :)
Michigan has the horses to challenge for 2nd . . . but that program tends to underperform at nattys.

What a negative Nelly. I’m guessing spoons doesn’t agree. I’m pretty sure he has at least six penciled into the finals with four champs? And I prefer his “facts,” on this one.

Nope, not this year. Love the next years team and the year after that. Honestly see 2 finalists 1 champ and 3 more AA’s. Add Ferrari to the finals IF he can wrestle and make 149. Highly unlikely so I am not count him.
Finalists: Woods and Franek
Champ: Woods
AA’s: Ayala, Caliendo and PK outside shot with Kueter but going to be tough as an undersized true Frosh so for now I will say no.

In regards to Haines, maybe. But here is a list of athletes that have won both Cadet and Jr world titles: Spencer Lee, Gable Steveson, Mark Hall & Meyer Shapiro. Shapiro aside, Steveson is the only one that did not win a title as a true freshman. Meyer will be in the mix for sure.

My friend, I hope Meyer is in the mix and can somehow beat Levi...and also hope that anyone can beat Levi. But based on what I saw last year IMO it's Levi vs. the field and I'd still pick Levi if I had to bet money.

I'm not a gambler but I'm taking Meyer over Levi.
Meyer's issue is going to be his leg defense. He's very offensive - but when you get to his legs - he doesn't seem to be willing to use any baseline defense.

Haines will make him pay if that's the case. 157 is going to be fun. Chittum is going to be really dang good too if he can stay healthy.

Over the moon if Franek or Caliendo shock the world at tough-ass weights. Same if Drake comes back 100% and lays down the law.

Disappointing if no one makes the finals.

Consolation if PSU has 0 champs.
Is there any realistic chance that Penn Stats doesn’t win the national championship again ? Are there scenarios where Iowa could unseed them. ?

Not completely relevant but my dad did go to an I Club event yesterday where Tom spoke briefly. My knowledge is clearly second hand at best but it sounds like that Tom said that the program looks to be a bit of a mess but that the product put on the mat will be better than people expect. I think he kind of alluded to some of the suspensions under appeal plus the transfers. He also said Keuter is not supposed to be in the room at all until football is over and that once football is over Keuter should be 100% focused on wrestling till the end of that season.

This is just about what we expected for the most part. Hopefully the appeal process frees up atleast one of our guys to wrestle this season. We could really use Big tone and out of everyone I feel worst about him not getting to finish out his career.

Probably the first and/or best update the common fan has received. Sounds right in line with what us day-to-day dork internet fans have been lead to believe/expect.

Meyer looked great at the U20 World Championship. Thought the Iranian would beat him, but that dude ran out of gas. As good as Meyer looks (and he looks great), I don't think he'll have anything for Levi, no matter how much I want it to be so. I think Meyer could finish somewhere in the 4-8 range.

Time to re watch some meyer videos . Appreciate the point of view.

I could be way way out in left field but I think strength might be in Levi’s favor and seems like maybe meyer is growing into 157 and Levi could be growing out of it .

I was more of a mindset of can Meyer use his hands to setup his takedowns .

a lot has changed since this battle .

I believe Meyer will spend a lot of time on the mat with Yianni which will help him a lot.
I think Meyer is more talented than Levi, but Levi has a strength advantage.
I really wanted to see Meyer become a Hawkeye but was ok when he went to Cornell because we had Chittum. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us and yes Cody is going to be very very good.

I don't think Chittum is going to be that great. Between injuries and style, I think he disappoints. Hasn't developed a consistent leg attack in 4 years and slow feet. He'll be good, not great. Thought that when he was here too.

So you're saying I shouldn't have put very very in front of good???

His HI-C became a pretty good weapon while he was at Iowa. Watch his matches at Farrell and the international tourney he went to.

His biggest problem is going to be health. He has A LOT of wear and tear and will need to be treated like a senior level athlete.

The argument was solely about recruiting. Not retention. If a guy commits and spends a year in your room, his leaving doesn’t negate that fact…

you ask a girl to prom and she says yes. you spend a few weeks holding hands in the hall. then on prom night she goes to the dance with someone else, did you actually have a prom date or not?

Way too early predictions
125 Ayala 7th
133 Teske rd12
141 Woods 1st
149 Voinivich 8th
157 Franek 5th
165 Caliendo 5th
174 Kennedy 7th
184 Swafford/Glazier rd16
197 Franklin/Glazier 1-2
285 Kueter rd12
Team 3rd or 4th

I do think Gabe could reach the podium at 184 but a red shirt is what’s best for him.

That depends on how her holding your hand made you feel...

Depends on who she danced with, and especially who she left with.

Plus, I don't think @MSU158 had a prom date. He spent too much time debating which girl to ask. 🙂

Of course you can. Just because he decommited doesn't mean you weren't originally recruited to Iowa. David Taylor was absolutely a recruit for Iowa State, even though he never wrestled for them. Jesuroga was still a commit.

Even then, it was Chittum's dad that blew up that deal, not Cody himself. Remember, this part of the discussion isn't about retention, let alone development or production. It is the fact that Iowa IS ABSOLUTELY getting in on more top 10's than they were the 1st half of Brands tenure and they are doing it with consistency...

In a conversation discussing recruiting success, you're counting recruits who never enrolled or wrestled a single match as a Hawkeye. That's absurd.

Lol, the guy spent a YEAR in the room wrestling at Iowa. You want to say I want to argue about anything? You are the one parsing and jumping on a topic that I am 100% right about.

The poster I responded to said Iowa only lands top 10's "every once in a while". Even with your parsing over Chittum, that is PATENTLY false...

"Lands" is the keyword there.

And what if a guy commits and then decommits and never spends a day in the room?

I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t land on the podium 3Xs. There’s going to be top of the wood pile talent to contend with for him every year, so being a national champ probably not likely, but he’s going to be in contention every year.

I'm hoping there is a realistic chance they don't break Iowa's scoring record.

Wouldn't be shocked at all with a 3x AA result, but don't think he's going to be in contention unless there's a talent drain at the weight. Too many dynamic prospects with much higher ceilings imo.

He would have been a better prospect 15 years ago imo. Grinders typically don't have the same kind of success anymore, even really good ones.

Think fair but low end on several.

Ayala should do better if healthy
Task can not argue too much but would love to see him AA
Woods hell yea
Voinovich you would know better then me
Franek I believe will be better, or is it I hope?
Caliendo and/or Kennedy for 65/74 IF Brands does not win back his year? Would be happy with those places
184-197-Heavy, praying for a miracle and for getting Big Cass back!

Do we really have a chance on having a 197’er wrestling on Saturday night. If so, I had no idea.
