2025 MBB Recruiting Thread

Not a single one of these kids will commit. I'll be the first to admit if I'm wrong. But I grew up in Maryland and everyone out there thinks Iowa is Hick Central. It's just a fact, I saw it every day.

Terrible recruiting strategy. Unimaginably stupid. Fran and his staff are completely wasting their time out there. HUGE opportunity cost being lost... which is yet another reason the dude needs to go.

Note: and I don't wanna hear a damn thing about Garza coming out here. He was an outlier who stuck w Iowa because they were the first to discover him. Totally irrelevant.
Your post seems like a broken record. Nothing ventured. Nothing gained.

I offer Garza as evidence bc he is often the be all/end all to anyone getting orgasmic over Iowa recruiting the East Coast. Dude was an outlier who had loyalty to the program. And I'll admit if I'm wrong, but I highly doubt there's any evidence out there w these current recruits saying Fran was their first. That narrative only grew/became well known w Garza's ugly ass bc he became so good.

Agree with many of your other points. And also admit my thinking about Fran may be biased by this point. He's just not hacking it, and w the baggage his wife brings I just simply don't get it. His era will be hardly remembered in 50 years. Never should've been hired here in the first place.
Get lost negative nelly.

Annandale in Virginia for 10 years. Had the summer teams and then scouted and did stats during the regular season. Had the JV baseball team also. Same time frame. Had some kids do D2 and D3 from both sports plus a couple on mid major D1 schools. Coached against kids who were D1 and also some eventual pros in baseball.

Scouting, summer league teams and stat keeping are all more like hobbies. Not actually coaching. I seriously hope you're not the type who goes around telling people you're a "coach."

Based on previous posts I've seen from you, it definitely seems like you're the type to tell people you're a real coach.

Not sure what I did to deserve your personal attacks. I do not have to justify to you whether 22 years of high school coaching at both levels of play in baseball and basketball qualify me as a coach. Not everyone was able to coach at the college level like your Dad. I just know when I see a former player or parent they still smile and say “Hi, Coach“, including guys who went on to play in college. Good enough for me. Now can we stop the insults to each other and focus on the Hawks?

Bravo, ‘hi coach’ says what needs to be said

hey dean riddle me this. are you saying they won't getting anybody just the DMV or from the East in general?

just want it clarified and the area defind.

Iowa offered 6'11, 230 pound PF/Center Luke Bevilacqua on June 22, 2023.

Here is a good story on him and his thoughts on Iowa.

Some excerpts:

The 6-foot-11, 230-pound center, has a very smooth touch from the mid-range and is a prime-time prospect when it comes to being in the paint on the offensive end. In addition, with a high motor, Bevilacqua is also very active on the defensive end. Obviously, no shortage of size, it’s good that he’s able to combo that size with High-IQ and a high-motor.

This is what makes Bevilacqua an enticing prospect.

Whether it was his post-game, his mid-range shooting, or connecting posters on lob attempts, Bevilacqua is a modern-day five-man and has been emerging all year long. It started at the DMV live event at Dematha and continued over the last few weeks between AAU and independent school camp in New Jersey.

I last watched Bevilacqua two weeks ago. An influx of college coaches was in attendance, the majority of those being high-major coaches. Some of which have already extended an early offer to The George School’s starting big man.

I wanted to hear more about his recruitment so he got with Stockrisers.com and gave us an update regarding his recruitment, read here:

Which schools are the heaviest involved?

“I’d say Iowa, Xavier, Harvard, Virginia Tech, Penn State, St. Joe’s, Maryland, St. John’s, Fairfield, Yale, and Ohio State.”

Any new schools?

“Iowa, Xavier, Harvard, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, and Fairfield all within June.”

What’s Iowa’s pitch and your thoughts on the program?

“I got a chance to speak with Head Coach, Fran McCaffery, he said a lot of great things. Loved my style of play, and how I’ve improved from last year to this year when they were recruiting my teammate, Kachi. Loved the type of teammate I am as well. I love the conversation we had and I’m looking forward to continuing our relationship.”

How would you best break down your game?

“I’m a power forward, offensively can seal my man and score in the post with different footwork. As well as the mid-post. shoot the three balls and take my man outside to create for myself or find my teammates. See through the double teams in the post. I’m heavy on crashing the boards too and being a rim protector on the defensive end. Can guard 3-5.”

How would you like your game to evolve?

“I’m trying to be a versatile defender that’s what I like to see my game improve more. As well as continue to be more versatile overall while not forgetting what a big has to do in rebounding and blocking shots.”

Iowa offered 6'9, 195 pound PF Nikola Bundalo on May 3, 2023. He has a 7'0 wingspan.

Here are some excerpts from a recent story; as you can see, he's noticed the recent players Fran has put in the NBA.

Which schools would you say are the heaviest involved in your recruitment?

“Well, I mean all of them stay in touch but Michigan State is a huge one, Iowa, Xavier, Ohio State.”

Who are the newest interests?

“Michigan State just recently became a big contributor once they found out about me. Other than that, I’m waiting on some new ones, but I’m sure with the grace of god more is to come in the future.”

How about Iowa and the success they’ve had with their forwards, thoughts?

“I think Coach McCaffery and the surrounding staff have a great development system for their bigs having had another player drafted. They’re one of those schools that consistently show up and get wins.”

Michigan State. Have they made a pitch to you yet and thoughts on them are?

“I think they have an unbelievable program. And they haven’t [made a pitch]. I can’t speak on anything yet but they’re a big contributor to my recruitment.”

Xavier, thoughts on them and what have they pitched to you?

“I think in the past few years and the years to come they have become a top program. They were my first high-major offer, so Coach [Sean] Miller is huge in my recruiting and I talk to him a lot.”

Do you have any visits in the works?

“I don’t have anything currently set in stone, but I have a lot of schools I plan on visiting once the last live period is over.”

I have a feeling the Freeman’s, along with the McCaffrey’s (yes Fran, CMac, and PMac have been major assets) and the Sandfort’s, are going to be very good to us!

I was hoping to add the Weiskamp’s to that list but it seems that Luke is more of a mid-major prospect at this point anyway…

it will be interesting to hear what Fran is telling 2025 prospects because I am sure they have heard the noise that Fran might be retiring sooner rather than later (because, allegedly, Fran wants to watch Jack play in college & Jack, as of now, plans to leave the state for college)

I say this as kindly as possible, but I don't even think Luke is a top 5 player in the state for 2025. That class is kind of loaded with good mid major + high major players: Jack, Stinson Jr., Davis Kern, Trevin Jirak, Xzavion Robinson (though he'll play football), Caleb Haack. And those are just the names I know that Iowa & ISU have looked at from the top of my head. There could be more.

Hadn’t seen this posted yet…

Per a recent interview:

"I like how they develop big men and use them in their system,"

"I think the environment is really good, and I like coach (Fran) McCaffery."

"I do plan to visit. I haven’t gotten a date yet, but it will most likely be in the fall,"

Have you seen anything on what Fran is telling prospects regarding his future at Iowa? I am sure prospects have seen/heard the rumors that Fran might be done in March, 2025 (so that he can watch his son Jack play in college).

We're up to 36 offers so far for the Class of 2025. Lets face it. Recruits want to know that their coach will (hopefully) be around during their 4 years; there are no guarantees, of course. I always thought Fran would coach until at least March, 2029, which is when this Class of 2025 (and Jack McCaffery) would graduate from Iowa.

Was there for sure an Iowa offer? Maybe I am missing something but the tweet you posted got deleted and on his Twitter profile the last offer he boasts about is the Maryland offer on June 15. Rivals doesn't show an Iowa offer either....TOS does....just kinda strange....
Hmm, looks like it was deleted for some reason. His AAU team was the one to tweet it out so that's weird.

Ha, yeah I think beating Duke in any recruiting battle is going to be tough. We'll see if they offer and if they pursue hard.
I think it's notable that a high 4-star from Virginia is planning to visit Iowa.
Yep, getting a top recruit from VA or NC to attend Iowa versus the blue blood ACC schools would be a remarkable breakthrough. Fran has been knocking on the door the past few years, and the first could open the doors to others.

Iowa is never going to be able to go to other Big Ten states and beat other Big Ten schools for recruits. Just not going to happen. So going to the East Coast and trying to sell the Big Ten is a smart strategy even if there is a low success rate. Just further reasoning why recruiting to Iowa is so difficult. There really is no viable recruiting strategy for consistent success and it's why Fran deserves so much credit for doing so.

They got Tony Perkins who was runner-up for Indiana Mr. Basketball. Got Freeman last year who had offers from MSU and other BIG schools. So I wouldn't say never.

They also got Cooper Koch in the 2024 class and have regularly gotten players out of Big Ten states who had other Big Ten offers. Dumb statement by monoman3232.

Perkins had no high major offers and Freeman played in the QC senior year and committed early so you can count him if you want but he's pretty much the only example.

Koch is a legacy so he doesn't count and no Iowa doesn't regularly get players from Big Ten states who had Big Ten offers. And before you bring them up; Dembele is an international recruit who didn't move to US until he was 17 and Bowen is from Boston and who both went to prep school so they don't count. You basically got 1 or 2 recruits in the last decade that fit. In fact here's a quote from a Big Ten coach about Iowa: “There aren’t a ton of players in Iowa, and you aren’t going into Chicago, Indiana or Ohio and beating guys for kids in those states.” – Big Ten head coach. The only dumb statement here is yours that Iowa "regularly gets players out of Big Ten States who had Big Ten offers".

The truth is this: Iowa is a difficult school to recruit to. Any coach here is going to need to recruit the Midwest hard and develop geographic pockets of concentration via the staff, like Fran has done with Eldridge recruiting the Boston area and Spurlock working connections in the DMV region.

Fran’s initial staffs were poorly constructed from a recruiting standpoint, outside of Dillard. Francis didn’t have strong enough connections anywhere and Speraw didn’t give them much of anything outside of Iowa.

I’m confident the current staff (including Spurlock) is much stronger from a recruiting than in years past.

The Big Ten states are always going to be vital to Iowa’s recruiting and without them you don’t have Marble, White, Perkins, Nunge, Gesell and other quality Hawkeyes. You could even consider Garza as being from Big Ten country as Maryland’s campus is a half hour drive away from where Luka went to high school.

I think the state of Illinois is a huge recruiting opportunity for Iowa going forward. I think Fran got three quality players in Freeman, Harding and Koch and I think he can really make some hay with the kids outside of Chicago in the state. I’ve thought for a while he should have put more of an emphasis in the Land of Lincoln and his failure to offer kids like Tyler Hall and Isaiah Roby hurt the talent level in the program.

With Gatens seeming to have some Illinois connections from his time at Drake and with the strong relationship now with MidPro Academy, things should continue to go well just over the Mississippi for the Hawks.

From a national writer on another site, here is what Nate Ament had to say about Iowa:

Iowa: “That relationship is good. My guy Tristian Spurlock is over there and I have a great relationship with him. He’s a nice guy. I think I’m going to go watch a football game on my visit.”

Seems like Spurlock is doing a lot of recruiting for a glorified secretary ;).
